(Relation de Jean Rrebeuf. July, 1636, p. 121.) VII. REMAINS OF ANIMALS IN THE SHELL MOUNDS. We have mentioned, on u previous page, some of the more conspicuous animals, noticed by travellers and naturalists, which formerly inhabited or still live on the shores of the St. John's. The explorations of the shell heaps show to what extent these and other species were used as food by the earliest inhabitants. The accompanying table, based upon the pieces of bone found in the mounds, gives a complete list of the species recognized, the most of which are supposed to have been eaten; followed from side to side it shows the mounds in which the remains of one and the same animal have been detected, and from above downwards the different kinds of animals found in one and the same mound. The bones are not found however in equal numbers, for while some species are abundant there are others which are represented by a very few pieces, as the bear and the wild turkey, or even by a single piece, leaving the explanation of its presence somewhat doubtful. As the table shows, the species most commonly met with, that is in the largest number of mounds, are the deer, the hard and soft-shelled turtles, the alligator, gar-pike, cat-fish, and a species of whiting (Umbrina), and these, it may be stated, are also the most frequent in the individual mounds. Book excerpt: Large accumulations of ancient shells on coastlines and riverbanks were long considered the result of garbage disposal during repeated food gatherings by early inhabitants of the southeastern United States. In this volume, Asa R. Randall presents the first new theoretical framework for examining such middens since Ripley Bullen’s seminal work sixty years ago. He convincingly posits that these ancient “garbage dumps” were actually burial mounds, ceremonial gathering places, and often habitation spaces central to the histories and social geography of the hunter-gatherer societies who built them. Synthesizing more than 150 years of shell mound investigations and modern remote sensing data, Randall rejects the long-standing ecological interpretation and redefines these sites as socially significant monuments that reveal previously unknown complexities about the hunter-gatherer societies of the Mount Taylor period (ca. 7400–4600 cal. B.P.). Affected by climate change and increased scales of social interaction, the region’s inhabitants modified the landscape in surprising and meaningful ways. This pioneering volume presents an alternate history from which emerge rich details about the daily activities, ceremonies, and burial rituals of the archaic St. Johns River cultures.

Book excerpt: Beginning with Frank Hamilton Cushing’s famous excavations at Key Marco in 1896, a large and diverse collection of animal carvings, dugout canoes, and other wooden objects has been uncovered from Florida’s watery landscapes. Iconography and Wetsite Archaeology of Florida’s Watery Realms explores new discoveries and reexamines existing artifacts to reveal the influential role of water in the daily lives of Florida’s early inhabitants. Contributors compare anthropomorphic wooden carvings such as the Key Marco cat statuette to figures found elsewhere in the Southeast, connecting Floridians with the Mississippian world. They use ethnographic data to argue that Newnans Lake was once an intersection between major watersheds and that the more than 100 canoes unearthed there likely facilitated travel throughout the peninsula. A second look at artifacts from the Fort Center pond reveals mortuary figurines were deposited intentionally and over the course of several centuries. Other sites discussed include Chassahowitzka Springs, Weedon Island Preserve, Pineland, and Hontoon Island. Essays address the challenges of excavating and preserving perishable artifacts from waterlogged sites, especially those in saltwater environments, highlight the value of revisiting museum collections to ask new questions and employ new analytical techniques, and emphasize the important role of the public in the discovery of wetland sites.
