Book excerpt: There's something fishy going on in the backwater town of Wanaduck, Washington, population 879, er, 878. Make that 850. Anthony "Juice" Verrone, former Mafia enforcer and guest of the Witness Security Program, is trying to hide from the Family he sent up the river. When a giant hot dog, a fiberglass bass, and a plummeting corpse put the squeeze on Juice, he thinks he's been found out. Juice teams up with Rudy Touchous, a forensic accountant, and Police Chief Dickie Gordon, to track down the killer. Instead, they run head-on into a public utility in desperate financial straits, a local troop of NASCAR-addled, bass-fishing rednecks with odd literary aspirations, and a vegetarian commune, which, in its dedication to the well-being of plants, is tossing more than lettuce into its salad bar. And what is that secret ingredient in their all-vegetarian hotdogs? The Utility's plans leak, so they bring in a strange parade of hired guns to make sure the people who know too much can't say anything. When these players mix it up at the Asparagus Festival a conflagration ignites that changes everything. Can Juice go back to being a regular guy? Or does he find out that he can hide, but he can't just disappear?

Book excerpt: How orange juice became a North American breakfast staple and what "100% pure orange juice" means today Close to three quarters of U.S. households buy orange juice. Its popularity crosses class, cultural, racial, and regional divides. Why do so many of us drink orange juice? How did it turn from a luxury into a staple in just a few years? More important, how is it that we don't know the real reasons behind OJ's popularity or understand the processes by which the juice is produced? In this enlightening book, Alissa Hamilton explores the hidden history of orange juice. She looks at the early forces that propelled orange juice to prominence, including a surplus of oranges that plagued Florida during most of the twentieth century and the army's need to provide vitamin C to troops overseas during World War II. She tells the stories of the FDA's decision in the early 1960s to standardize orange juice, and the juice equivalent of the cola wars that followed between Coca-Cola (which owns Minute Maid) and Pepsi (which owns Tropicana). Of particular interest to OJ drinkers will be the revelation that most orange juice comes from Brazil, not Florida, and that even "not from concentrate" orange juice is heated, stripped of flavor, stored for up to a year, and then reflavored before it is packaged and sold. The book concludes with a thought-provoking discussion of why consumers have the right to know how their food is produced.

A unique blend of dietary world wisdom, The Seasonal Detox Diet provides readers with a dynamic program for using healing fasts to detoxify, tone, and restore the body for optimum energy and performance. Traditional cultures worldwide have wisely followed the art of eating according to the natural rhythms of the changing seasons. Keeping the body in peak condition requires occasional fasts, periods of rest for the body's hard-working systems. Today, faced with exposure to an increasing array of chemicals, additives, and pesticides, our bodies need these healing respites more than ever. Unlike modern notions of fasting, Carrie L'Esperance's concept of this practice emphasizes dietary alteration rather than abstinence. She offers recipes designed around seasonal changes and geared toward individual health concerns, including fatigue, digestive disturbances, and excess weight gain. You will increase your energy levels, aid digestion, revitalize your skin, and cleanse your internal organs with a rich variety of delicious recipes from Banana Coconut Ice Cream and Big Scene Salsa Salad to Curry Potato Salad with Kidney Beans and Japanese Soba Noodles with Sesame Miso Sauce. Book excerpt: Introduction Dressings can transport you through every season and carry you to far-off places and cultures through their many diverse ingredients and surprising combinations of color, texture, flavor, and temperature. Oils and vinegars are the star players. Get to know the different vinegars and oils by tasting them. Extra virgin olive oil, canola, sunflower seed, grapeseed, walnut, and hazelnut oils, balsamic vinegar, apple cider, rice, sherry, red wine, and white wine vinegars - each one has its own distinctive personality and character. Given the dozens of commercial salad dressings available, it’s so easy to simply open a bottled dressing without thinking about it. In fact, I have a handful of favorites that I use in combination with other ingredients to give them a lift. But making your own homemade salad dressing is the idea I want to put into your mind. It is so delicious, fast, and fun! Plus, you control the ingredients, all healthy and fresh. As you go through the recipes, watch for these icons at the top of the page: I hope that you find a dressing or vinaigrette - or many - that you really like and will incorporate into your own cooking repertoire.
