Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Speech and Spelling: A First Guide to French Pronunciation A number of exercises have been added for purposes of revision and to stimulate the pupils to apply their knowledge. In recent years much progress has been made in the application of phonetics to modern language teaching, and there are now many classes in which the pupils acquire the foreign pronunciation by the aid of the symbols of the Association Phonétique Internationale. These were first used in England in 1898, in Dent's First French Book; at the present day they are to be found in almost every French course, and also in books for the teaching of English, German, Spanish, and Latin. The number of teachers who rely on imitation only is decreasing, and the results obtained are steadily becoming more satisfactory. It is with the conviction that Mr Richards' little book will be found a real help to this end that I recommend it to the notice of teachers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a text, this book looks at the external history of French from its Latin origins to the present day through some of the analytical frameworks developed by contemporary sociolinguistics. French is one of the most highly standardized of the world's languages and the author invites us to see the language as heterogenous, rather than a monolithic entity, using the model proposed by E. Haugen as a useful comparative grid to plot the development of standardization. After an introductory section which examines the dialectalization of Latin in Gaul, the four central chapters of the book are constructed around the basic processes invoved in standardization as identified by Haugen: the selection of norms, the elaboration of function, codification and acceptance. The concluding chapter deals with language variability and the wide gulf that has now developed between French used for formal purposes and that used in everyday speech, with particular reference to Occitan speaking regions. Emphasizing the ordinary speakers of the language, rather than the statesmen or great authors as agents of change, the book combines a traditional history of the language' approach with a sociolinguistic framework to provide a broad and comparative overview of the problem of language standardization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory textbook is principally addressed to English speakers who want systematically to improve their pronunciation of French - whether relative beginners or more advanced students. It describes the difficulties typically encountered, explains why they occur. and suggests ways to resolve them. It also explains how certain properties of the French sound system came about as the language changed over time, and it includes an examination of the relationship between French spelling and French pronunciation. Although focusing on the pronunciation of standard French, different pronunciations in other varieties of French (Québec French, Southern French, etc.) are also considered. In addition, from a more theoretical perspective, the book provides readers with a fundamental understanding of the way French sounds are produced and how they behave according to general linguistic principles. Overall the book stands as a multifaceted introduction to French sounds, drawing for its account on contrastive analysis, general phonetics, traditional knowledge and modern developments in phonology, historical linguistics, and orthography. Teachers of French will welcome Bernard Tranel's wide scholarship and firm grasp of teaching principles, while students will welcome the refreshing clarity of style and organization.
