Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Colonists and Exiles in the United States The French settlers in the United States have not received the attention due to them. Parkman and Bancroft and Roosevelt have dwelt upon the early history of the French in this country, and Fortier has given us an admirable work on the history of Louisiana. Many French authors and travellers have written about the United States, but little attention has been paid to the colonies settled with more or less success in the closing years of the Eighteenth and the beginning of the Nineteenth Centuries. Some accounts are found in local publications, those of state historical societies or in the pamphlets written by local authors, but these are not easily accessible. M.Anatole Le Braz, well known for his books on Brittany, suggested that a collected story be given of the efforts to establish French colonies in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exile of the Acadians: The People of Longfellow S Evangeline Of the many who have read Longfellow's Evangeline with unbounded delight, how few there are who know that the plaintiff, poetic story of Acadia, is but a picture of a real people, illustrating their simple mode of life and their multiple misfortunes. Yet our Nova Scotia once bore that romantic name, and her people were the Acadians of history, romance and song. The story carries us back to that long ago, when, from the frozen sea to tr-3 tropical gulf, this vast country was a nearly unknown wilderness, its mononony being undisturbed save by a few English colonies on the Atlantic shore of what is now the United States, and like settlements by France in Canada, each claiming by assumed right that which belonged to neither, and each fiercely jealous of the acquirements of the other. Thus the two most powerful nations of Europe sought extension of doninion and addition of wealth, while colonists, from various quarters and all classes, endeavored to improve their condition by casting their fortunes in the wilds of the "new world." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French in the Mississippi Valley and Spanish Explorations and Colonization: Excerpt From V. 2 of a Popular History of the United States At the revolution of 1688, he fell under serious suspicion of aiding in the plots for the return of James II. Once he was arrested and brought before the Lords of Council, and, at his own request, was taken before the King. A letter had been written him by James, and when examined in regard to it, he could not, he said, prevent him from writing to him but if that brought him under a suspicion of plotting for a restoration, it did not compel him to violate his duty to the state. The King seemed satisfied with his defence, and he was not again molested. It did not seem to him proper, however, to leave the kingdom while under such suspicion, and he remained in England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming of the Peoples The Spaniards exploited America for gold, the French established trading-posts for furs, the English built homes. The gold was spent, the furs were worn, the homes remained. The United States to-day is English in its lan guage, most Of its law and many Of its customs. The Englishmen who came to the New World stayed and became Americans, the Spaniards and the French who came had ever their hearts in their home-lands and looked on America as an abiding-place, only. The English were the first true colonists. TO this there was but the one exception - the Spanish colony at St. Augustine, Florida. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Neutral French, Vol. 1 of 2: Or, the Exiles of Nova Scotia It is useless, at this time of day, to pretend that a few interested and avaricious individuals were alone culpable in the affairs of the Neutral French, for full proof even yet exists, that they did what was done by the authority of the English King, George the Second, and under his hand and seal; and that when, after the deed was com pleted, and the remnant of those who survived drew up a memorial of their sufferings in the land whither they were banished, and sent it on to his successor, George the Third, it was rejected with cool indifference, and they left to perish, or exist by the charities of those they were among, as chance might direct.
