Book excerpt: Freiherr ULRICH VON DER HORST (1793-1867) trat 1806 in die Preußische Armee ein und nahm unter Yorck 1812 am Feldzug gegen Russland teil. 1813 diente er auf den anschließenden Feldzug als Adjutant der 1.Brigade in der Russisch-Deutschen Legion. Nach dem ersten Pariser Frieden 1814 wurde er wieder in preußische Dienste übernommen und kämpfte dann unter Blücher 1815 in der Schlacht bei Ligny und wurde mit dem Eisernen Kreuz II.Klasse sowie dem Orden der Heiligen Anna III. Klasse mit Schleife ausgezeichnet. Ab 1846 zunächst Oberstleutnant, dann Oberst und Kommandeur des in Posen stationierten 19.Infanterie-Regiments. Mit dem Regiment beteiligte er sich an der Unterdrückung des polnischen Aufstands. Horst wurde am 4. April 1850 verabschiedet. Im selben Jahr trat er als Generalmajor in das Schleswig-Holsteinische Heer ein und kommandierte zunächst das Jägerkorps, später die 3.Infanteriebrigade. In der Schlacht bei Idstedt führte er die Brigade mit Auszeichnung. Am 8.12.1850 löste er Wilhelm von Willisen als Oberbefehlshaber der Armee ab. Aufgrund der ungünstigen Verhältnisse im Lande konnten aber keine wesentlichen Erfolge mehr erzielt werden. Horst war so der letzte Kommandierende General der Schleswig-Holsteinschen Armee. 1852 veröffentlichte er ein Buch mit seiner Darstellung der Schlacht von Idstedt, in der er der deutschen Öffentlichkeit darzulegen versuchte, daß die Schlacht eigentlich von der Schleswig-Holsteinischen Armee schon fast gewonnen worden war und der Sieg über die dänischen Truppen praktisch vom Oberkommandierenden General von Willisen verschenkt wurde.
