Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freight Transportation on Trolley Lines Generally speaking the freight business of a steam road is larger and more profitable than its passenger service. While on electric traction lines this relation will not obtain, the subject of goods transportation is worth close study with the intent of following so far as may be expedient the practice of the great trunk lines. Our city and suburban traction systems are largely evolutions from horse car lines, when the service had severe limitations as to weight, speed and distance. Then the matter of freight or express transportation was rarely ever considered. When the modem electric car appeared, capable of carrying 125 people at a higher rate of speed 25 miles out into the country, the view of the management seemed focussed on the great advance in matters of passenger service, and there were few managers who had eyes to the business for which the steam roads principally stand. Book excerpt: Chicago's extensive transit system first started in 1859, when horsecars ran on rails in city streets. Cable cars and electric streetcars came next. Where new trolley car lines were built, people, businesses, and neighborhoods followed. Chicago quickly became a world-class city. At its peak, Chicago had over 3,000 streetcars and 1,000 miles of track--the largest such system in the world. By the 1930s, there were also streamlined trolleys and trolley buses on rubber tires. Some parts of Chicago's famous "L" system also used trolley wire instead of a third rail. Trolley cars once took people from the Loop to such faraway places as Aurora, Elgin, Milwaukee, and South Bend. A few still run today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Construction of Freight Rates in the South: Lecture Delivered Before the Students of the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University It seems to be believed by many that charges for transporta tion are an exception to this rule, and that, except in so far as they are regulated by public authority they can be fixed at any level desired by the carrier. Every man who has had practical experience in the transportation business, and especially in the department having to do with the fixing of rates, knows that this is not true. If it were otherwise, all: common carriers would prosper and such a thing as a bankrupt railway would be unknown. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Freight Traffic or Transportation: School in Quartermaster's Department Administration; Depot of Supplies, Philadelphia, Pa The reward for these graduates and their efficient administration of duties in the Quartermaster' s Department has been speedy promotion to higher rank with the resultant increase in pay. The records show that the majority of the new supply and quartermaster sergeants are graduates of this school, and there is no reason to doubt that the majority of future promotions to these ranks will be made from its graduates, and members of this class will be among the ones so honored. So there is really some thing to work for and I know all of you will do your best to attain the heights reached by the members of past classes. It is my contention that the experienced tramc man should be at the point of shipment, and it is very important in this day of Government economy that Marine Corps posts have experienced transportation or traffic men on the job. Especially is this important at the larger posts where a large volume of shipping is done, as at the Philadelphia Depot, Hampton Roads, Parris Island, Quantico, San Diego, San Francisco, and others. I might state, however, that due to the fact that we have men at most of these posts who have had training from some source or other, in cluding graduates of this school, the errors causing overcharges are very few, except when transfers of men are made and the relief is not familiar with the subject. Our main trouble at present is at the smaller posts where there is only an occasional shipment. It may be that some of you will do duty at one of these small posts and perhaps you may be instrumental in eliminating some of the errors at these posts. Errors can be made at the shipping point in connection with packing, loading, routing, and the incorrect issuance of the bills of lading that can not be corrected or rectified after the shipment is in transit. Errors may also be made by the receiver of the freight, but these as a rule are negligible compared with those which occur at the point of shipment. The whole structure of transportation by freight is based on laws and regulations promulgated by the Interstate Commerce Commission, and any of these laws that are violated, or not complied with, will in the majority of cases result in overcharges or higher freight charges. If a shipment is started out wrong it will go to final destination wrong, and the freight charges will be wrong, but will have to be paid no matter how bright or well informed the man paying the charges to the carrier may be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Bureau of Transportation to the Director-General: January 31st, 1877 It is unnecessary to state in detail the character of the Transportation arrangements made by the commissioners of the different countries (for the transportation of their goods. In Some in stances it was by special charters of either steam or sailing vessels, but usually it was effected by contracts with companies running regular lines o\f steamers to American ports. Some of these contracts were for a stated rate per ton, irrespective of the class of goods, and some provided for a schedule of rates varying, per ton, according to the classification of goods established by the company. Exhibits from China and Japan were brought to San Francisco by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company at half rates, and forwarded from that port: by the Pacific railroads, which, with the railroad lines between Omaha and Chicago, most generously gave free transporta tion from San Francisco to Chicago for seventy-four car-loads of these goods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Milton S. Hershey broke ground to construct his new chocolate factory in 1903, many questioned the wisdom of building in the middle of a cornfield. With his factory wedged between the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad tracks and the Berks & Dauphin Turnpike, Hershey set out to create a first-rate street railway system. The Hershey Transit Company existed many years after the trolley industry declined in most areas of the United States. It was the chief mode of travel for the chocolate factory workers, vital to dairy farmers for transport of fresh milk to the factory, and essential to students of the Hershey Industrial School housed in surrounding farms. On the weekends, the transit system brought people from outlying areas into Hershey, Pennsylvania, to enjoy the theater or the famous Hershey Park for employee picnics, family outings, or special occasions. Hershey Transit documents one of the best-known and well-kept streetcar systems, started by Milton S. Hershey and operated from 1904 to 1946.

Book excerpt: Streetcar lines grew and prospered in Dallas from 1872 until the 1920s. Automobile competition siphoned many of their riders away, but ridership soared again during World War II . After the war, the trolleys entered an era of gradual attrition, and they were abandoned by 1956. Amazingly, in 1989, the nonprofit McKinney Avenue Transit Authority (MATA ) returned restored vintage trolley cars to the city in the Uptown neighborhood near downtown. MATA evolved from a tourist attraction into a true transit company and became the M-Line. Since then, the area has experienced rapid growth and is now home to midrise office buildings and upscale apartments.
