Book excerpt: The transport sector consists of different modes of transport, each serving a growing demand for transporting people and goods. This (growing) demand on the one hand, needs expanding the systems’ capacity, and on the other hand, increasing the corresponding economic efficiency, effectiveness, and environmental and social friendliness. This implies development of a ‘greener’, i.e. a more sustainable transport sector. The book describes the current and prospective state of the art analytical modelling, conceptual planning, and multi-criteria evaluation of the selected cases of transport systems operated by different transport modes such as road, rail, sea, air, and intermodal. As such, the book is unique in addressing these three important aspects of dealing with transport systems before implementation of their particular components means by the selected cases. It will be particularly useful for readers from the academia and the professionals from the transport sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation planning plays a useful role as a lifeline for any society. It comprises applications of science and art, where a great deal of judgement coupled with its technical elements is required to arrive at a meaningful decision in order to develop transportation infrastructure facilities for the community. Transportation planning, thereby, helps in achieving a safer, faster, comfortable, convenient, economical and environment-friendly movement of people and goods traffic. In this context, an attempt has been made to write a comprehensive book on this subject, which not only deals with the basic principles and fundamentals of transportation planning but also keeps abreast of the current practices and policies conducted in transportation planning. Divided into 23 chapters, the book felicitously proffers the fundamental techniques of transportation planning and travel demand modelling, urban form and urban structure and their relation with transport pattern, land use-transport model, accessibility and mobility consideration in transport modelling, graph theory and road network planning, cost benefit analysis, mass transport planning, applications of intelligent transport system, applications of software in transport planning, and transport policies. Exploiting a systematic approach avoiding prolixity, this book will prove to be a vade mecum for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering and transportation engineering. Besides, this book is of immense benefit to the students opting a course on Master of Planning conducted in various institutes. Highlights of the Book • Systematically organised concepts well-supported with ample illustrations • Prodigious illustrative figures and tables • Incorporates chapter-end summary to help in grasping the quirk concepts • Presents state-of-the-art data • Includes chapter-end review questions to help students prepare for examination

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after starting work on the development of a methodology for national trans portation planning in Venezuela, we realized the importance of an integrated management process for such an effort. We also realized the absence in the literature of specific guidelines on how to manage and conduct a transportation planning effort. The literature on the subject of national transportation planning is predominantly theoretical and technical in nature. To a large extent, the absence of literature on management and broad-based methodological approaches reflects the limited and ad hoc nature of the experience in national transportation planning. This book is an attempt to fill that gap. The main objective of the book is to show one way by which a methodology for national transportation planning can be integrated into a process management framework. It reports on the experience that the authors had in the Venezuelan case, as well as in earlier national planning efforts. The book is not intended as a theoretical discussion of planning. Instead, it adopts a particular theoretical stand and proceeds on that basis to develop a program for applying a specific methodology. The intention is to leave as much of the details and elaborations of that methodology to the user. This is motivated by two considerations. The first is a pragmatic attempt to limit the scope of the book.

This new fourth edition is more strongly focused on serving the needs of all users, the role of safety in the planning process, and transportation planning in the context of societal concerns, including the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. The content structure has been redesigned with a new format that promotes a more functionally driven multimodal approach to planning, design, and implementation, including guidance toward the latest tools and technology. The material has been updated to reflect the latest changes to major transportation resources such as the HCM, MUTCD, HSM, and more, including the most current ADA accessibility regulations. Transportation planning has historically followed the rational planning model of defining objectives, identifying problems, generating and evaluating alternatives, and developing plans. Planners are increasingly expected to adopt a more multi-disciplinary approach, especially in light of the rising importance of sustainability and environmental concerns. This book presents the fundamentals of transportation planning in a multidisciplinary context, giving readers a practical reference for day-to-day answers. Serve the needs of all users Incorporate safety into the planning process Examine the latest transportation planning software packages Get up to date on the latest standards, recommendations, and codes Developed by The Institute of Transportation Engineers, this book is the culmination of over seventy years of transportation planning solutions, fully updated to reflect the needs of a changing society. For a comprehensive guide with practical answers, The Transportation Planning Handbook is an essential reference.

Book excerpt: Planning today is an increasingly complex system of specialisms, and this brand new introduction is the first textbook to offer both a broad overview of each core area in planning, alongside the skills necessary to combine each specialism in order to make sustainable and efficient planning decisions. In so doing, it gives students a unique glimpse into the realities of working in planning today. Planners need knowledge that goes beyond the history of planning decisions in order to reconcile competing demands, from corporate speculative property developers to environmental activists. This new role – aggregating specialisms – is at the forefront of this innovative approach, equipping students with the tools necessary to do planning; which today means being both expert and generalist, specialist and synthesiser. Planners must now act as professional mediators of different (often conflicting or incompatible) interests. Planners are themselves working as specialists, whether that is in heritage, transport, ecology, economic assessment, or design. And this dual role reflects the organisation of this new text, introduced with a wealth of practitioner-informed chapters to enliven and inspire passion for the crucial role of planning. This text is an ideal companion for all practitioners and students of planning and related disciplines – at undergraduate and master's level.

Book excerpt: In September 1980, the Special Programme Panel on Systems Sciences of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sponsored an Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on "Systems Analysis in Urban Policy-Making and Planning" which was held at New College, Univer sity of Oxford, from 21st to 27th September. This week-long meeting brought together 35 invited delegates from most countries of the NATO Alliance to discuss the impact which syst~ms analysis has had and is likely to have on urban affairs. The manuscript was submitted to the publisher in June of 1982. Although the goal of the ARI was to assess the impact of urban systems analysis as seen through the eyes of those closely involved in such work, the meeting also addressed opportunities for future research and development, and therefore in this book we have attempted to synthesize discussions at the meeting with this in mind. But before we describe the structure of this book, it is worth recounting in a little more detail the intentions and organi zation of the meeting, for this has had an important effect on the type of papers produced here, the way they have been written, and the issues they address.
