Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments have made a new generation of high-strength concrete a viable material for routine construction. The two principal developments are high-range water-reducing admixtures, which permit the placement of concrete of very low water-cement ratio, and silica fume, a pozzolan of extremely high fineness. The advent of this high- strength concrete has put requirements for strength and durability in conflict. Because entrained air reduces the strength of concrete, builders seek to eliminate or limit the use of entrained air. There are those who argue that high-strength concrete is of such a quality that entrained air is unnecessary. Much of the high-strength concrete currently being used is in buildings, where the question of durability is minor. The question, however, cannot be avoided in exposed highway structures. Service records of non-air-entrained high-strength concrete exposed to freezing are not conclusive. Hence, this report synthesizes the available knowledge on the subject. Its aim is to provide guidance to those who wish to use high-strength concrete in typical highway applications and to indicate where further information is needed.

Book excerpt: This report presents results of an investigation dealing with the mechanical properties and freezing and thawing resistance of high-strength, silica fume concrete using ASTM Test Method for Resistance of Concrete to Rapid Freezing and Thawing (C 666-84, Procedure A). Eighteen nonair-entrained and six air-entrained concrete mixtures, 0.06 m3 in size, were made. The water-to-(cement + silica fume) ratio (W/C + S) of the mixtures ranged from 0.25 to 0.36, and the percentages of cement replacement by silica fume were 0, 10, and 20% on a weight basis. Any loss in slump due to the use of silica fume was compensated for by the use of a superplasticizer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete durability in climates where freezing and thawing occurs is a continuing problem. It is particularly acute for highway and bridge structures, where de-icing salts are used to combat the effects of frost, snow and ice. These salts can cause damage to concrete and accelerate corrosion of reinforcements. This book presents the latest international research on this area, with contributions from North America and Europe which were presented at an international RILEM workshop.

Book excerpt: This study, aimed at improving the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete, consists of three parts. Part I evaluates parameters affecting the freeze-thaw durability of concrete. A modification of the existing standard of method for determining the durability factor of concrete specimens is proposed, and a new procedure for fundamental transverse frequency (used in durability factor calculations) has been developed. Part II focuses on developing better methods for identifying nondurable aggregates, and has resulted in a rapid new test based on the hydraulic fracture of aggregates. Part III describes field experiments to evaluate the freeze-thaw resistance of a number of specified concrete mixes and the use of sealants to mitigate D-cracking. Preliminary field performance results are presented.

Book excerpt: A very high early strength portland cement-based concrete (VHES) is used to prevent long closures of highway lanes by completing any necessary repairs overnight. This technology has been embraced by several DOT agencies, including those in areas where the concrete will be subjected to freezing and thawing cycles. Flexural strength of VHES concrete is the critical parameter to permit traffic flow without damage to the concrete. It is possible to produce air-entrained rapid repair concrete, but this places higher requirements on the mixture proportions to overcome strength reduction caused by the presence of air. This article presents data showing that it is possible to attain the necessary strength and achieve adequate resistance to freezing and thawing cycles. The evidence presented includes accelerated testing using ASTM C 666, Procedure A, and scaling resistance using ASTM C 672. Additional evidence is presented showing that VHES concrete of low w/c can be durable with larger than acceptable spacing factor levels or without air entrainment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical book from a highly experienced author presents clearly the means and methods for designing, producing and using high-strength concrete. High-strength concrete offers many benefits. Higher compressive strengths allow for a reduction in the cross-sectional dimensions of columns and walls in buildings. Its greater stiffness allows for increasing building heights while controlling sway and occupant comfort. Civil structures such as bridges have benefited from greater span lengths, shallower beam sections, wider girder spacing, and extended service life. Illustrated with real life examples, through documented case histories, High-Strength Concrete will be a valuable resource for contractors, producers, inspection agencies, as well as engineers and researchers.

Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this successful textbook presents a comprehensive introduction to statistical and numerical methods for the evaluation of empirical and experimental data. Equal weight is given to statistical theory and practical problems. The concise mathematical treatment of the subject matter is illustrated by many examples and for the present edition a library of Java programs has been developed. It comprises methods of numerical data analysis and graphical representation as well as many example programs and solutions to programming problems. The book is conceived both as an introduction and as a work of reference. In particular it addresses itself to students, scientists and practitioners in science and engineering as a help in the analysis of their data in laboratory courses, in working for bachelor or master degrees, in thesis work, and in research and professional work.
