Would his undead existence be ... ordinary?Hardly. THE VAMPIRE IN FREE FALL takes us on a roller-coaster ride of adventure as our "ordinary" night stalker finds himself caught up in espionage, murder for hire, grand theft and bloody revenge. The dangers of his tour as a soldier in Vietnam quickly pale against the car chases, street fights, burglaries and contract killings of his new life as a blood-drinking assassin-spy. Whether he can escape his human handlers and attain freedom, peace of mind and the love he craves is another matter. But never is this vampire's life merely ordinary.Jim Hull - author of Are Humans Obsolete? - brings a unique approach to the vampire thriller, taking us from Saigon to the outer planets, from the 1960s to the twenty-third century, from a war in the jungle to battles in space. It's part hard-boiled, part sci-fi, part dark comedy and all excitement, a tale that'll keep you in its grip."It will appeal to anybody who enjoys vampire books . . . Download or read book Native State written by Tony Cohan and published by Crown. This book was released on 2003-10-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating, deeply affecting memoir chronicling a journey from a Hollywood childhood as the son of a fading show business figure to a bohemian life in Europe and back to his native state of California, where the author must face the man who had driven him away. Summoned from abroad to attend to the ninety-four-year-old father he’s never been close to, writer and musician Tony Cohan finds himself reliving his own peripatetic life—a kaleidoscopic odyssey from California’s sunny postwar promise through the burnt end of the 1960s to the final days of the last century. An engrossing investigation of memory and identity, love and desire, art and fate, Native State vividly portrays the author’s attempts to escape the confines of a celebrity-filled, alcoholic family through music, writing, and travel. His descent into the colorful milieus of musical and literary geniuses and lowlifes, divas and crooks, fortune tellers and culture gods in Paris, Tangier, London, Copenhagen, Barcelona, San Francisco, Kyoto, and Los Angeles coalesces into a distinctive, intimate depiction of a pivotal cultural era. Throughout, Cohan brilliantly interweaves and contrasts his past experiences with his present-day reflections on the universal youthful desire to flee home and family, and the simultaneous “undertow of origins” urging a return. The result is a work that combines unusually rich storytelling with extraordinary literary quality. Poignant, elegantly crafted, and often funny, Native State is an indelible portrait of the artist as a young man, and—as son and dying father grope toward acceptance—a coming-to-terms with self, family, origins, and the elusive American idea of home.

Download or read book The Patriot Act written by Robin Polseno and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-08-10 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Returning to New York in the autumn of 2002, after seven tranquil years passed as an expatriate guitarist living in Mexico, Patrick Pellegrino once again takes up the hectic pace of a hotshot musician with a hit Broadway musical, while being confronted with the enormous changes wrought in the city-as well as the country as a whole-by the gut-wrenching events of September 11, 2001. So much has changed since Patrick left New York, not the least of which is the topsy-turvy geo-political makeup of the post-Cold War world, but what becomes most apparent on his return to his homeland is the fact that The Patriot Act had morphed into so much more than a well-meaning piece of legislation behind color-coded terrorism alerts. To a civil libertarian with a mindset forged in the tumultuous 1960s, it seems to confuse the public more than protect the populace, and Patrick is about to get a crash course in constitutional rights when he makes a rhetorical-if unabashedly intemperate-comment about the state of politics in the new millennium on his cell phone. And being taken away in handcuffs by a grim-faced squad of FBI agents is only the beginning of his nightmare.

Book Synopsis Spectacular Digital Effects by : Kristen Whissel
Download or read book Spectacular Digital Effects written by Kristen Whissel and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By developing the concept of the "digital effects emblem," Kristen Whissel contributes a new analytic rubric to cinema studies. An "effects emblem" is a spectacular, computer-generated visual effect that gives stunning expression to a film's key themes. Although they elicit feelings of astonishment and wonder, effects emblems do not interrupt narrative, but are continuous with story and characterization and highlight the narrative stakes of a film. Focusing on spectacular digital visual effects in live-action films made between 1989 and 2011, Whissel identifies and examines four effects emblems: the illusion of gravity-defying vertical movement, massive digital multitudes or "swarms," photorealistic digital creatures, and morphing "plasmatic" figures. Across films such as Avatar, The Matrix, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jurassic Park, Titanic, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, these effects emblems heighten the narrative drama by contrasting power with powerlessness, life with death, freedom with constraint, and the individual with the collective.
