Book excerpt: When fun-loving glamour girl Quintessa Beaumont learns the Navy has established the WAVES program for women, she enlists, determined to throw off her frivolous ways and contribute to the war effort. No-nonsense and hoping to make admiral, Lt. Dan Avery has been using his skills to fight German U-boats. The last thing he wants to see on his radar is a girl like Tess. For her part, Tess works hard to prove her worth in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Unit in Boston--both to her commanding officers and to the man with whom she is smitten. When Dan is assigned to a new escort carrier at the peak of the Battle of the Atlantic, he's torn between his lifelong career goals and his desire to help Tess root out a possible spy on shore. The Germans put up quite a fight, but he wages a deeper battle within his heart. Could Tess be the one for him? With precision and pizazz, fan favorite Sarah Sundin carries readers through the rough waters of love in a time when every action might have unforeseen world-changing consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one has explained and defined conservative ideas better than the Great Communicator, Ronald Reagan. Using quotes from his speeches and addresses, The Original Reagan Conservative brings to life Ronald Reagan's views of the uniqueness of America, and the conservative ideas of freedom, limited government, economic liberty, low taxes, a strong defense, and the traditional American values that have made this country great. These ideas renewed and invigorated an America shaken by the turmoil of the 1960's and 1970's. These are the ideas that can guide America to success and prosperity today. Ronald Reagan had the courage to lead our country based on a conservative vision of America. Who among us has the courage to take up these ideas and lead today?

Download or read book Facing Freedom written by Daniel B. Thorp and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of African Americans in southern Appalachia after the Civil War has largely escaped the attention of scholars of both African Americans and the region. In Facing Freedom, Daniel Thorp relates the complex experience of an African American community in southern Appalachia as it negotiated a radically new world in the four decades following the Civil War. Drawing on extensive research in private collections as well as local, state, and federal records, Thorp narrates in intimate detail the experiences of black Appalachians as they struggled to establish autonomous families, improve their economic standing, operate black schools within a white-controlled school system, form independent black churches, and exercise expanded—if contested—roles as citizens and members of the body politic. Black out-migration increased markedly near the close of the nineteenth century, but the generation that transitioned from slavery to freedom in Montgomery County established the community institutions that would survive disenfranchisement and Jim Crow. Facing Freedom reveals the stories and strategies of those who pioneered these resilient bulwarks against the rising tide of racism.
