Book excerpt: Excerpt from Financial Independence and How to Attain It, Vol. 1 Money or finance is the foundation of civilization. Every civilized human is more intimately concerned in a proper financial system justly administered than in any other human institution. As the happiness and well-being of all are vitally affected, and as we are all interdependent each upon the other, it is the clear duty of every citizen to understand, and to see that his neighbor understands; so that the existing evils may be corrected for the benefit of all. The reader should realize that the matter in hand is too important to all of us to be lightly dismissed, even should he not agree with the author on either the cause, the remedy, or the result. There must be something radically wrong; otherwise we' would not have had Pujo Committee in vestigations, the anti-trust Laws, the Laws Prohibiting Interlocking Directors, the Fed eral Reserve Act, and lastly, the Act Providing for Rural Credit Institutions. That the articles have not been wholly useless has been generously testified by both employers and employees, as a few letters here reproduced show. Book excerpt: Set yourself up for life as early as possible, and enjoy life on your terms By layering philosophy with practical knowledge, Set for Life gives young professionals the fiscal confidence they need to conquer financial goals early in life. Are you tied to a nine-to-five workweek? Would you like to "retire" from wage-paying work within ten years? Are you in your 20s or 30s and would like to be financially free―the sort of free that ensures you spend the best part of your day and week, and the best years of your life, doing what you want? Building wealth is always possible, even while working full-time, earning a median income, and making up for a negative net worth. Accumulating a lifetime of wealth in a short period of time involves working harder and smarter than the average person, and Scott Trench--investor, entrepreneur, and CEO of BiggerPockets.com--demonstrates how to do just that. Even starting with zero savings, he demonstrates how to work your way to five figures, then to six figures, and finally to the ultimate goal of financial freedom. Wealth isn't just about a nest egg, setting aside money for a "rainy day" or accumulating an emergency fund. True wealth is about building out a Financial Runway―creating enough readily accessible wealth that you can survive without work for a year. Then five years. Then for life. Readers will learn how to: Save more income--50+ percent of it, while still having fun Double or triple your income in three to five years Track your financial progress in order to achieve the greatest results Build frugal and efficient habits to make the most of your lifestyle Secure "real" assets and avoid "false" ones that destroy wealth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Financial System of the United Kingdom This volume was prepared at the suggestion of the late Sir Edward Hamilton, who had in vain cherished during a lifetime in the Treasury the project of publishing a connected account of our financial procedure, which he believed to be much needed by members of Parliament, by Government Departments, and by the public at large. Want of leisure compelled him to defer the execution of his plan until his retirement from the service, when he hoped to treat the subject with greater freedom of comment and criticism than were permissible in an active official. But on his retirement his health was too broken for the task for which he was so exceptionally qualified. In attempting to observe his wishes I have limited myself, so far as possible, to describing things as they are here and now, not as they have been, as they might be, or as they are in other countries. All that is offered is a summary exposition of our financial system, its organisation, methods, and forms of procedure. Book excerpt: From the author of What This Cruel War Was Over, a vivid portrait of the Union army’s escaped-slave refugee camps and how they shaped the course of emancipation and citizenship in the United States. Chandra Manning casts in a wholly original light what it was like to escape slavery, how emancipation happened, and how citizenship in the United States was transformed. This reshaping of hard structures of power would matter not only for slaves turned citizens, but for all Americans. Integrating a wealth of new findings, this vivid portrait of the Union army’s escaped-slave refugee camps shows how they shaped the course of emancipation and citizenship in the United States. Drawing on records of the Union and Confederate armies, the letters and diaries of soldiers, transcribed testimonies of former slaves, and more, Manning allows us to accompany the black men, women, and children who sought out the Union army in hopes of achieving autonomy for themselves and their communities. It also raised, for the first time, humanitarian questions about refugees in wartime and legal questions about civil and military authority with which we still wrestle, as well as redefined American citizenship, to the benefit, but also to the lasting cost of, African Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling study, Rena Steinzor highlights the ways in which the government, over the past twenty years, has failed to protect children from harm caused by toxic chemicals. She believes these failures—under-funding, excessive and misguided use of cost/benefit analysis, distortion of science, and devolution of regulatory authority—have produced a situation in which harm that could be reduced or eliminated instead persists. Steinzor states that, as a society, we are neglecting our children's health to an extent that we would find unthinkable as individual parents, primarily due to the erosion of the government's role in protecting public health and the environment. At this pace, she asserts, our children will inherit a planet under grave threat. We can arrest these developments if a critical mass of Americans become convinced that these problems are urgent and the solutions are near at hand. By focusing on three specific case studies—mercury contamination through the human food chain, perchlorate (rocket fuel) in drinking water, and the effects of ozone (smog) on children playing outdoors—Steinzor creates an analysis grounded in law, economics, and science to prove her assertions about the existing dysfunctional system. Steinzor then recommends a concise and realistic series of reforms that could reverse these detrimental trends and serve as a blueprint for restoring effective governmental intervention. She argues that these recommendations offer enough material to guide government officials and advocacy groups toward prompt implementation, for the sake of America's—and the world's—future generations.
