Book excerpt: The field of chemical reaction dynamics has made tremendous progress during the last decade or so. This is due largely to the development of many new, state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical techniques during that period. It is beneficial to present these advances, both theoretical and experimental, in a review volume (Parts I and II). The primary purpose of this review volume is to provide graduate students and experts in the field with a rather detailed picture of the current status of advanced experimental and theoretical research in chemical reaction dynamics. All chapters in these two parts have been written by world-renowned experts active in such research.

Book excerpt: Polymer Yearbooks provide reviews of Japanese and Russian polymer science not otherwise readily available in English. An essential desk reference of general interest to polymer scientists, they contain reviews covering topics in polymer synthesis, degradation, renewable polymer sources, drug release, thermodynamics of polymers under shear, etc. The books also contain lists of recent publications in polymer science and a compilation of dissertation abstracts. Names and addresses of research annuals in polymer science and their editors are listed, together with useful information such as standard abbreviations and trade names. Containing summaries of useful physical, chemical, and mathematical data along with definitions of terms in polymer science, the Polymer Yearbook is a must for any practicing polymer chemist. This volume also contains reviews on state-of-the-art Japanese research presented in the annual Spring and Fall meetings of the Japanese Polymer Science Society. The aim of this section is to make information on the progress of Japanese polymer science, and on topics of current interest to polymer scientists in Japan, more easily available worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project, we have carried out a collaborative experimental and theoretical study of a number of elementary collisional processes involving small molecular free radicals of importance in combustion and in the decomposition of propellants. These have involved chemical reactions and photodissociation, as well as nonreactive collision-induced rotational and electronic transitions. In addition, we have obtained information on the non-bonding interactions between a free radical and a rare gas partner through analysis of the electronic spectrum of the van der Waals complex of these species. The close interaction of our experimental and theoretical groups has allowed much greater insights to be obtained on the dynamics of these collisional processes than would have been obtained by the effort of these groups working independently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary radical reactions are described in terms of fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry and chemical physics in this valuable reference text. The complex radical processes of nonchain and chain mechanisms, such as dimerization, alkylation, polymerization, telomerization, halogenation pyrolysis, oxidation and combustion, are complemented by reactions in chemical lasers and in the cosmos, as well as by reactions in biological objects under normal or pathological metabolism. The text also provides the synthesis of facts from various fields of research and involves mechanisms where free radicals appear either as main or side intermediates in one of the several alternatives of the reaction pathway. Highlights include 38 tables and 39 figures.

Book excerpt: The need for accurate computational procedures to evaluate detailed properties of gas phase chemical reactions is evident when one considers the wealth of information provided by laser, molecular beam and fast How experiments. By stressing ordinary scalar computers to their limiting performance quantum chemistry codes can already provide sufficiently accurate estimates of the stability of several small molecules and of the reactivity of a few elementary processes. However, the accurate characterization of a reactive process, even for small systems, is so demanding in terms of computer resources to make the use of supercomputers having vector and parallel features unavoidable. Sometimes to take full advantage from these features all is needed is a restructure of those parts of the computer code which perform vector and matrix manipulations and a parallel execution of its independent tasks. More often, a deeper restructure has to be carried out. This may involve the problem of choosing a suitable computational strategy or the more radical alternative of changing the theoretical treatment. There are cases, in fact, where theoretical approaches found to be inefficient on a scalar computer exhibit their full computational strength on a supercomputer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Arene Chemistry Explore the wide array of uses for aromatic hydrocarbons in this comprehensive reference Aromatics are a class of compounds—normally but not exclusively organic—which tend to be produced as by-products of various industrial processes. Their importance as petrochemical materials in themselves, along with the range of inter-relations between different aromatic chemicals, creates a complex and opportunity-filled market for aromatics. Industrial Arene Chemistry provides a thorough look at the conventional techniques required to use and produce these aromatic hydrocarbons. Beginning with an overview of the global aromatic market—including, but not limited to, manufacturers, markets of BTX, and downstream functional aromatics, aromatics derived from renewable sources, and economic forecasts—the book will also explore the impact shifting environmental factors will have on the future of aromatic chemistry. The text further explores BTX production processes differentiated according to the raw materials used. Importantly, this will establish the importance and growth of the biobased chemical industry. Industrial Arene Chemistry readers will also find: Case studies that describe major elements of specific technologies prototyped by contributors/companies as part of ongoing market development efforts Process chapters that include summaries of the conventional techniques and a more detailed discussion of recent high-impact studies Recent advances in conventional aromatic reactions, including alkylation, acylation and carboxylation, hydrogenation/reduction, oxidation, nitration/amination, sulfonation, and halogenation Industrial Arene Chemistry is a useful reference for chemists and chemical engineers who work with aromatics.

Book excerpt: Anomalous electron-spin state populations in the Electron Paramagnetic Re sonance (EPR) spectra of radicals formed during radio lysis experiments were observed in 1963 by FESSENDEN and SCHULER [170a]. This phenomenon did not receive much attention at the time. In 1967, BARGON, FISCHER, and JOHNSEN [5] and independently WARD and LAWLER [7,8] reported a similar phenomenon for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra taken during radical reactions: emission or enhanced absorption, or both. The earliest attempts to explain this new NMR phenomenon treated these effects in a way similar to that of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) or the Overhauser effect. Although the polarization has a completely different origin, DNP gave its name to this effect: Chemically Induced Dynamic Nuclear Polariza tion (CIDNP). [The name Chemically Induced Dynamic Electron Polarization (CIDEP) was introduced later by analogy with CIDNP]. After the initial publica tions, all the new data demonstrated that the first theory could not be correct. In 1969, a new theory was proposed by CLOSS [18] and independently by KAPTEIN and OOSTERHOFF [23] and called the radical-pair theory. This mechanism was proposed to account for the observations of polarization in both NMR and EPR. The radical-pair theory is based on weak interactions in a pair of radicals: the strength of interaction between the electronic states of the radicals depends in particular on the nuclear-spin states.
