Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Hand Drawing and Designing One of the greatest requirements of the modern engineer is to be able to make rapid neat sketches freehand, i. e. without the use of any drafting instruments, but simply by employing a well sharpened soft pencil and an eraser. There are many cases in the daily practice of every engineer from the lowest to the highest ranks, when they are called upon to make a free-hand sketch of a job, and in some cases this rough sketch remains later the only available record of the condition of the job before any changes took place. It is therefore important to have such sketches done as neatly and accurately as possible so that they would convey the correct idea to the draftsman or to the man who is to carry out the particular work represented by such sketches. There are two principal kinds of sketches employed in describing engineering work: the actual picture of the job, as it appears to the eye; and the orthographic projection of the object in the three principal planes, but drawn roughly without the aid of instruments and not to correct scale. We will endeavor in the following chapters to cover the principles of both types of sketching, beginning with the simplest objects first and then leading up to the free-hand drawing of more or less complicated parts of machinery. This number is placed at the top Of each page on the headline Opposite the page number; and to distinguish it' from the page number it is preceded by the printer's section mark Consequently a reference such as 4, page 29, would be readily found as follows: look along the inside edges Of the headlines until 4 is found, and then through 4 until page 29 is found. Book Synopsis Drawing and Designing by : Charles G. Leland
Download or read book Drawing and Designing written by Charles G. Leland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drawing and Designing: In a Series of Lessons Mr. Charles G. Leland, in his work on Practical Education, distinctly insists on the utility, indeed the paramount importance, of a sound and practical rudimentary training, whether in connection with elementary or more advanced technical education. This is becoming daily and increasingly apparent to those who, in their care and training of the young of both sexes, are guided by reason and common sense. Failing such a basis, it is obvious that no process of later cramming is likely to produce equally successful and permanently beneficial results. This series of manuals on The Minor Arts and Industries is designed on the lines thus laid down. It will be found that each handbook presents the subject with which it deals in a thoroughly popular and practical manner; that the lessons carry the student on his road step by step from the simplest elements to the point where the most advanced works fitly find their place in his course of study; in short, the greatest pains have been taken to insure a thorough mastery of the rudiments of each subject, and so clearly to state each lesson, illustrating it where necessary by plans and drawings, that even very young children may be interested in and trained to practical work. On similar grounds the self-taught student will find these manuals an invaluable aid to his studies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis A Text-Book of Free-Hand Lettering (Classic Reprint) by : Frank Thomas Daniels
Download or read book A Text-Book of Free-Hand Lettering (Classic Reprint) written by Frank Thomas Daniels and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Free-Hand Lettering The changes in this edition of Free-hand Lettering are so numerous and radical that the result is a new book, rather than a revision of the old one. The text has been entirely rewritten, and new plates and figures have been drawn. The proportions of letters have been greatly improved, and a distinctly higher standard has been set for the student. At the same time, he is given careful directions to enable him to approach the standard. These directions have been made as explicit and clear as possible, for the author is well aware that the time which can be given to this work in the technical schools is very limited. Throughout the book there is a constant attempt to present principles which will appeal to the student's reason, rather than to give rules which will only tax his memory; that is, an efiort is made to show that the details, which at first sight may seem numberless and involved, have a logical basis. When this basis is once understood, no effort of memory is necessary for the proper handling of details. On the other hand, teachers should remember, especially in the first stages of the work, that it is not sufficient for students to understand reasons. In order that they may attain the object of their work in this subject, they must acquire skill in execution; wherefore the definite directions for performing exercises. There is repeated insistence in the text that lettering belongs in the realm of design. If the work is approached with this idea, it will be done with pleasure, and with a sense that it is a means of expressing individuality. This book was released on 2017-06-03 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course in Free-Hand Geometrical Drawing: For Schools, and for the Training of the Eye and Hand Destined to Mechanical Pursuits and Arts of Geometrical Design; With Chapters on Lettering and on Geometric Symbolism IN geometrical, or mechanical drawing, exclusive reliance for accuracy may, in theory, be placed on good drawing instruments. Practically, these instruments are not absolutely perfect as means to the ends to be accomplished by them, and from this, and momentary negligences of the draftsman, they are not ih fallible in accuracy Of Operation. But, viewing the eye and hand simply as instruments for executing conceptions Of form, they are incomparably more perfect and varied in their capacities in this respect than draft ing instruments; and Well directed practice should, and will, bring out this Capacity. Hence, other things being the same, he will be the most expert and elegant draftsman, whose eye is most reliable in its estimates Of form and size, and whose free hand is most skilled in expressing these elements of figure.
