Book excerpt: This is a modern day story about an old man and a boy; their lives forever integrated by an accident and an evil doctor’s insatiable drive to unravel the mysteries of the human mind. The ensuing operation pushes the medical boundaries beyond moral and ethical limits. The end result is a situation in which a relatively mature individual is forced to cope as a young teenager in an inescapable dysfunctional family environment. Deep family emotions grounded in despair and denial are uprooted and gradually exposed in unexpected hilarious twists and turns. A temporary unsettled peace culminates in another disaster. Played out in two very different countries (Canada and South Africa) difficult cultural and racial issues of past generations are laid bare. Two young South African doctors aid the teenager while protecting a fragile new South Africa from civil war in the post ‘Apartheid’ era. Supported too by his rejuvenated family, the youngster’s startling wisdom and keen sense of humor serve to strengthen the relationships between the characters as the forces of good and evil wrestle for control of the ultimate prize - immortality

Download or read book Joseph Addison written by Paul Davis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Addison: Tercentenary Essays is a collection of fifteen essays by a team of internationally recognized experts specially commissioned to commemorate the three hundredth anniversary of Addison's death in 2019. Almost exclusively known now as the inventor and main author of The Spectator, probably the most widely read and imitated prose work of the eighteenth century, Addison also produced important and influential work across a broad gamut of other literary modes—poems, verse translations, literary criticism, periodical journalism, drama, opera, travel writing. Much of this work is little known nowadays even in specialist academic circles; Addison is often described as the most neglected of the eighteenth century's major writers. This volume is the first collection to address the full range and variety of Addison's career and writings. Its fifteen chapters fall into three groupings: the first set study Addison's work in modes other than the literary periodical (poetry, translation, travel writing, drama); the second set address The Spectator from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (literary-critical, sociological and political, bibliographical); and the final set explore Addison's reception within several cultural spheres (philosophy, horticulture, art history), by individual writers or across larger historical periods (the Romantic age, the Victorian age), and in Britain and Europe, especially France. The volume provides an overdue and appropriately diverse memorial to one of the dominant men of letters of the Georgian era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When schoolgirl Janey Macklin disappeared from the seedy side of London in 1988, her case went cold, with no body and no witnesses. Now, thirty years later, private detective Kate Marshall has been approached by a true crime podcast producer with an intriguing question they need her help answering: What if Janey was killed by Peter Conway, the notorious Nine Elms Cannibal? The contract would be the most lucrative of Kate’s career, but it comes with a price of its own, dredging up a sordid, complicated past that she would sooner forget . . . one that the paparazzi are determined to keep in the headlines. As Kate and her partner, Tristan, scour King’s Cross for clues, no two leads seem to point in the same direction. The last person to see Janey alive has already been tried, convicted, and then acquitted of her murder, Peter Conway is in poor health and fading fast, and the line between their clients and their suspects is blurring with each new revelation about the case. With little to work from, can Tristan and Kate wade through clandestine phone calls, decades-old secrets, and deteriorating DNA evidence to solve Janey’s murder, or will she remain one of London’s countless missing persons, forever lost to time? A brilliantly gripping thriller from the global multi-million-copy bestselling author, The Lost Victim will have you hooked from the first page and holding your breath all the way to the heart-stopping ending. Can be read as a standalone. What readers are saying about The Lost Victim: ‘With so many red herrings, you would need to be Columbo to have any hope of solving this one! Grippingly brilliant and highly addictive!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sarah H, Netgalley Reviewer ‘The best yet in this sterling series. Truly, such a wonderful example of this incredibly talented author’s work!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Louise G, Netgalley Reviewer ‘I do love a Kate Marshall thriller and this one is an absolute belter. The clues are perfectly placed, and the story perfectly paced. Another totally absorbing case with characters I love to while away the hours with. I cannot wait for more!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jen Med’s Book Reviews ‘Gripping, suspenseful, and twisty. Proves yet again that you simply can not go wrong with a Robert Bryndza book! He is one author I never need to read the synopsis - I just grab it!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kelly Y, Netgalley Reviewer ‘Robert Bryndza produces great novel after great novel I was hooked from the start, the plot unfolds at pace and I was captivated with each turn of the page!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Claire W, Netgalley Reviewer ‘Wow, wow, WOW! The Lost Victim exceeded all my expectations and is a very, VERY good read, and one of my top reads so far this year, full of suspense, thrills and atmosphere!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Anne M, Netgalley Reviewer ‘This story will have readers on the edge of their seats as the story unravels and takes you to places you wouldn't expect. An ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC thriller!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ryan F Netgalley Reviewer ‘What is it about this author's writing that can keep a reader's eyes glued to every page? Maybe it's the bright, capable, intelligent, strong female mc? Maybe it's the well-developed cast of supporting characters? The well plotted, fast paced storyline? Or how he can manage to create a sense of the reader 'belonging' in the picture through well written descriptive text? Maybe, it's because of the suspense - from the beginning until the end, the story twists, turns, zigs and zags. Or maybe, it's just all the above?! Either way, all I know, is that I loved every tense, nail biting moment!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Angela H, Netgalley Reviewer ‘Another amazing Robert read, never disappointed only that its finished, love Kate Marshall as much as I love Erika Foster, took me less than 24 hours because once I pick up one of Roberts books, I can't put it down!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sammy J, Netgalley Reviewer ‘This was such an enjoyable book. No matter what series (or standalones) Bryndza writes, he always delivers an amazing novel!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kevin H, Netgalley Reviewer ‘I love Robert Bryndza books and know when I start one there will be very little work done. This was no exception I couldn’t put it down. He portrays the menace of the serial killers in a way that gives the reader a chilly shudder. Excellent.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Anni S, Netgalley Reviewer

Book Synopsis The Strong, Silent Type by : Buck Rainey
Download or read book The Strong, Silent Type written by Buck Rainey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-18 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the stars of silent westerns were young horse wranglers who left the open fields to make extra money bulldogging steers and chasing Indians around arenas in traveling Wild West shows. They made their way to Hollywood when the popularity of the Wild West shows began to decline, found work acting in action-packed silent westerns, and became idols for early moviegoers everywhere. More than 100 of those cowboys who starred in silent westerns between 1903 and 1930 are highlighted in this work. Among those included are Art Acord, Broncho Billy Anderson, Harry Carey, Fred Cody, Bob Custer, Jack Daugherty, William Desmond, William Duncan, Dustin Farnum, William Farnum, Hoot Gibson, Neal Hart, William S. Hart, Jack Holt, Jack Hoxie, Buck Jones, J. Warren Kerrigan, George Larkin, Leo Maloney, Ken Maynard, Tim McCoy, Tom Mix, Pete Morrison, Jack Mower, Jack Perrin, William Russell, Bob Steele, Fred Thompson, Tom Tyler, and Wally Wales, to name just a few. Biographical information and a complete filmography are provided for each actor. Richly illustrated with more than 300 movie stills.
Book Synopsis The Hidden Among the Hidden by : Helen K. Black
Download or read book The Hidden Among the Hidden written by Helen K. Black and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing number of elder men providing hands-on care to loved ones, particularly spouses, undeniably represents a hidden segment of the home care population. With that in consideration, caregiving in communities of color, in particular, is increasing while numbers of informal (unpaid) caregivers are projected to triple by 2030. Despite statistics, studies on African-American men who care for other elders (such as spouses and parents) -- indeed, "the hidden among the hidden" -- are negligible. This text follows a study conducted by Helen Black, a research scientist focusing on aging, alongside John Groce and Charles Harmon, founders of Mature Africans Learning from Each Other (M.A.L.E.), in which they interviewed elderly African-American men in caregiver roles. As a whole, The Hidden Among the Hidden is unique in its study of caregiving in the areas of subject matter, methodology, and presentation of findings. The men whose attitudes and behaviors toward caregiving are recorded in this book share a wealth of knowledge for other caregivers, gerontologists, healthcare professionals, students, and the community in general.

Download or read book Critical Forms written by Ross Wilson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Forms is an account of the generic forms in which literary criticism has been undertaken. It examines chiefly Anglophone literary criticism, with comparative discussion of French and German material, from around 1750 to the present and examines prefaces, selections and anthologies, reviews, lectures, dialogues, letters, and life-writing. Though not intended to be an exhaustive history of the period, Critical Forms begins in the mid-eighteenth century with the emergence of something like the forms (chiefly, the essay and the treatise) in which criticism is still predominantly practised. In order at least to complicate this predominance, the book documents an abiding plurality in the forms of literary critical writing in the subsequent period, leading up to the present. Ross Wilson both questions the status of the essay and treatise as the 'natural' forms of literary criticism and shows that the history of literary criticism is much more formally various and innovative than the usual ways of recounting that history as a succession of schools and movements would allow. Critical Forms harbours the hope that it will make available a wider array of forms for the practice of literary criticism today; it is this hope that licenses its own experiments in critical form.
