Frauen sind im Wissenschaftsbereich, besonders auf höheren Hierarchieebenen, unterrepräsentiert. Diese Arbeit konzentriert sich auf Wissenschaftskarrieren von Frauen, die bereits den Einstieg in die Wissenschaft gefunden haben, aber ihre Wissenschaftskarriere nicht fortsetzen. Es soll untersucht werden, welche Ursachen für diese Marginalisierung verantwortlich sind. Es ist eine annähernd gleiche Zahl männlicher und weiblicher Hochschulabsolventen zu verzeichnen, auch der Anteil weiblicher Beschäftigter an Hochschulen liegt ca. bei 51% - jedoch nimmt er mit steigendem Qualifikationsniveau ab (vgl. Statistisches Bundesamt 2005). Das heißt, Frauen setzen an einer bestimmten Stelle ihre wissenschaftliche Karriere nicht weiter fort; sie verbleiben in einer bestimmten beruflichen Position oder verlassen ihren Arbeitsplatz im Wissenschaftsbetrieb. Wie ist dieser „Ausstieg“ der Frauen aus der Wissenschaft zu erklären?. Gibt es Barrieren für Frauen beim Beschreiten einer wissenschaftlichen Karriere, und wenn ja, welche Barrieren sind das? Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage werden zum einen strukturelle Bedingungen der Wissenschaftspraxis dargestellt (z. B. wissenschaftlicher Habitus, Zeitaspekt, Interaktion, Netzwerke). Zum anderen sollen auch die individuellen Bedingungen (z. B. Motivation, Zielgerichtetheit) betrachtet werden. Die vorgestellten strukturellen und individuellen Bedingungen werden in Bezug auf eine weibliche Wissenschaftskarriere interpretiert. Es wird herausgestellt, welche Vorteile bzw. Nachteile die verschiedenen Bedingungen für die wissenschaftliche Karriere von Frauen darstellen. Dabei werden Barrieren identifiziert, mit welchen eine Frau beim Verfolgen einer akademischen Karriere konfrontiert wird. Die Ergebnisse verschiedener Forschungen und aktuelle Literatur zum Thema (Leemann, Lind, Heintz, Krais u.a) sowie geeignete theoretische Konzeptionen (z.B. Bourdieu/ Habitus, Organisationssoziologie, interaktionistische Ansatz/ Ridgeway) bilden die Grundlage dieser Ausführungen. Relevante soziologische Theorien und empirisches Material werden in der Arbeit zusammengeführt, um die Ursachen der Unterrepräsentanz von Frauen auf akademischen Karrierewegen theoretisch sowie empirisch zu begründen.
