Zu Beginn wird ein kurzer Überblick über die allgemeine Situation der Frau in den Städten des spätmittelalterlichen Deutschlands gegeben, um im Anschluss daran die Stellung der Frauen im spätmittelalterlichen Köln besser einordnen zu können. Wie sahen ihre damaligen sozialen Rechte aus und inwiefern konnte sie wirtschaftlich tätig werden? Im darauf folgenden Kapitel wird zunächst die rechtliche Situation der Kölnerin aufgezeigt. Welche Rechte hatte sie als Ehefrau? Konnte sie Bürgerin der Stadt mit allen Rechten werden? Wie war das Erb- und Testamentsrecht in Köln geregelt? Besaß die Kölnerin ein Recht auf Bildung? Die wirtschaftliche Stellung der im Handel tätigen Frau in Köln soll in einem nächsten Abschnitt betrachtet werden, wobei dies den Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit bilden soll. Im darauf folgenden Kapitel wird ein Überblick über die Arbeit und über den Aufbau der Frauenzünfte, die deutschlandweit nur in Köln vorzufinden waren, gegeben. Anschließend wird die Situation der Kölnerinnen in den Zünften, in welchen Männer und Frauen gemeinsam arbeiteten, dargestellt. Der Handel spielte gerade für das spätmittelalterliche Köln eine entscheidende wirtschaftliche Rolle. Inwiefern waren Frauen direkt oder indirekt am Kölner Handelsgeschehen beteiligt?

Viele berühmte Bauwerke zieren diese Stadt am Rhein, wie die eindrucksvollen Kirchenbauten, insbesondere der Kölner Dom, das Tanzhaus Gürzenich, das Overstolzenhaus oder die Häuser der Kölner Gaffeln und Ämter. Eine weitere Besonderheit dieser vielseitigen und multikulturellen Stadt war es, dass auch Frauen an Handwerk und Handel auf vielerlei Weise beteiligt waren und mehr Rechte und Freiheiten besaßen als in anderen deutschen Städten des Spätmittelalters. Zudem gab es in Köln Zünfte, in welchen fast ausschließlich Frauen arbeiteten. Dies war im europäischen Spätmittelalter ein außergewöhnlicher Umstand, da sogenannte Frauenzünfte nur noch für Paris und Zürich bezeugt sind. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich daher speziell auf die Kölner Frauenzünfte der Garnmacherinnen, Goldspinnerinnen und des Seidengewerbes eingehen. Doch im ersten Kapitel werde ich zunächst eine Skizze Kölns im Spätmittelalter erstellen, um daraufhin einen kurzen Einblick in die Stellung der Frauen in dieser Stadt geben zu können. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt vor allem auf die rechtliche und soziale Situation der Frauen in Handel und Handwerk gelegt. Daraufhin folgt das Kapitel, in welchem ich näher auf die Frauenzünfte und die rechtliche, soziale und wirtschaftliche Lage der Zunftgenossinnen eingehen werde. Im Anschluss darauf erfolgt das Fazit. Die Erforschung der sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Lage der Frauen im Mittelalter begann Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts, wobei Ausgangspunkt dieser Forschung fast ausschließlich die sogenannte Frauenfrage war, welche einen Überschuss an Frauen mit 20% gegenüber Männern in der Stadt Nürnberg um 1449 annimmt. Dies wurde von Karl Bücher anhand einer Zählung errechnet, die der Rat der Stadt Nürnberg aufgrund der gefährlichen Lage im Markgrafenkrieg durchführte, um die vorhandenen Getreidevorräte und Einwohnerzahlen zu erfahren.Die Annahme eines Überschusses an Frauen im Spätmittelalter ist jedoch in der heutigen Forschung umstritten. Für manche Städte im Spätmittelalter wie die Stadt Freiburg im Breisgau wurde ein Männerüberschuss errechnet. Doch da es im Mittelalter keine expliziten Statistiken gab und auch in Zählungen viele Personen unberücksichtigt blieben, lässt sich das Gegenteil ebenso wenig beweisen.

Dass es aber in bestimmten Regionen des Spätmittelalters Frauen gab, die erwerbstätig waren und sogar teilweise den gleichen Berufen nachgingen wie ihre Ehemänner, rückt in den Hintergrund. Im Verlaufe des Hoch- und Spätmittelalters entwickelten sich mittelalterliche Siedlungen zu Städten. Diese Städte standen im Allgemeinen für die Freiheit der Bürger*innen, was für die Frau aber eher unzutreffend war. Sie fand sich im familiären bzw. gesellschaftlichen Kontext in starken Abhängigkeitsverhältnissen zu ihrem Vater oder Ehemann, unter deren Vormundschaft sie stand. Die männlichen Verwandten bestimmten, wen oder wann sie heiraten musste und bestimmten damit auch ihren Lebensverlauf. Eine seltene Ausnahme bot in einiger Hinsicht die spätmittelalterliche Stadt Köln. Bekannt als eines der größten Handelsstädte des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation, bot sie auch einen Ausnahmefall für die Rechte der Frau, die ihr in dieser Stadt zugeschrieben wurden und veränderte somit nicht nur ihren täglichen Tätigkeiten, sondern auch ihre soziale Stellung innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Doch nicht nur die Frau wurde dadurch in vielen Lebensabschnitten bereichert. Ihre erweiterte handwerkliche Arbeit, welche dann in den späteren Frauenzünften ausgeübt wurde, bedeutete für die Stadt Köln den Vorteil von luxuriöser Ware, welche in ganz Europa gefragt war und den Handel mit diesen verstärkte. In dieser Arbeit wird analysiert, inwiefern die spätmittelalterliche Kölnerin an diesem Handelsgeschehen beteiligt war und wie es überhaupt dazu kam, dass sie einen festen Platz in der Arbeitswelt Kölns bekam. Dafür ist es zunächst wichtig, die Stadt Köln näher in Augenschein zu nehmen und zu erläutern, welche Bedeutung sie als Fernhandelsstadt für die Bürger und Bürgerinnen hatte. Dann erst kann das Individuum der Frau betrachtet werden, welche Stellung sie in Köln einnehmen durfte und welche wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Aspekte damit einhergingen. Dann kann erst ergründet werden, wie es dazu kam, dass der Frau der Weg in die handwerklichen Berufe offen stand und es so zur Gründung von Frauenzünften kam.

In dieser Arbeit soll dargestellt werden, wie die soziale und rechtliche Lage der Kölner Frauen zur Zeit des Spätmittelalters ausgesehen hat. Auch hierzu wurden Untersuchungen, vor allem von Margret Wensky, bereits unternommen, die für diese Arbeit herangezogen werden.
