Book excerpt: This is the first critical, contextualized edition in English of Eine Jugend in Deutschland (1933), the remarkable autobiographical account of Ernst Toller (1893-1939), one of the most important German writers of the first half of the twentieth century. He was a celebrated poet and, along with Bertolt Brecht, the most significant and innovative playwright of the Weimar Republic. His critically acclaimed and societally controversial work left its mark on many of his contemporaries and is still inspiring writers today. Completed at the beginning of Toller’s exile from Nazi Germany, Eine Jugend in Deutschland gives a remarkable account of his childhood as the son of Jewish merchants in Eastern Prussia under Kaiser Wilhelm II, his studies in France, his eager service at the western front during World War One, his conversion to pacifism, his activism in the German Revolution of 1918-1919 and leadership in the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, his trial for high treason, and his incarceration as a political prisoner of the Weimar Republic.

Book excerpt: Marx and Engels' views on war, revolution and the relation between the two exolved over time in response to the turbulent political and military history of the nineteenth centurey. The result has been widespread confusion among historians and in the socialist movement. The tendency has been to search for quotes which will buttress the writer's own views and exhibit it as "what Marx said." This book tries to clear up the confusion and misrepresentation.

Book Synopsis Philosophy and Sociology: 1960 by : Theodor W. Adorno
Download or read book Philosophy and Sociology: 1960 written by Theodor W. Adorno and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In summer 1960, Adorno gave the first of a series of lectures devoted to the relation between sociology and philosophy. One of his central concerns was to dispel the notion, erroneous in his view, that these were two incompatible disciplines, radically opposed in their methods and aims, a notion that was shared by many. While some sociologists were inclined to dismiss philosophy as obsolete and incapable of dealing with the pressing social problems of our time, many philosophers, influenced by Kant, believed that philosophical reflection must remain 'pure', investigating the constitution of knowledge and experience without reference to any real or material factors. By focusing on the problem of truth, Adorno seeks to show that philosophy and sociology share much more in common than many of their practitioners are inclined to assume. Drawing on intellectual history, Adorno demonstrates the connection between truth and social context, arguing that there is no truth that cannot be manipulated by ideology and no theorem that can be wholly detached from social and historical considerations. This systematic account on the interconnectedness of philosophy and sociology makes these lectures a timeless reflection on the nature of these disciplines and an excellent introduction to critical theory, the sociological content of which is here outlined in detail by Adorno for the first time.

Download or read book The People's Stage in Imperial Germany written by Andrew Bonnell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history of the Freie Volksbuhne (Free People's Theatre), Berlin, from 1890-1914, in the light of the cultural theory and practice of German Social Democracy in Imperial Germany. The clash between German Social Democracy - the party, intellectuals and workers - and the German Imperial State was played out in the Freie Volksbahne (Free People's Theatre) founded by intellectuals to energize working class political awareness of drama with a political and social cutting edge. It fell foul of state censorship, lost its bite, yet prospered. The book looks in detail at the various programmes guiding the Volksbuhne's work and at the reception of the plays by the largely working-class audience, to offer a detailed study of the interactions between cultural and political history in Imperial Germany.
