Book excerpt: A world divided by war; a community united by hope.Christmas Eve, 1943, and all is quiet on the Home front. Whilst a world war rages overseas, the quiet city of Utica, New York, struggles to maintain a semblance of normality as its citizens pray for their loved ones fighting on foreign soil.Frank the Barber, cornerstone of the community, prides himself on two things; his ability to cut hair, and to listen, and in such troubling times everyone has a story to tell. A lawman and a vagabond. A shoeshine boy and a man of God. None are exempt from the turmoil of the world, but on this special night a ray of hope shines upon the city, giving each and every citizen hope for a brighter future as they recount their tales of tribulation and triumph.

Book excerpt: I am glad to have the opportunity to publish this book so that the public can read the limericks that I have written during the course of my life. The problem however is that I don't believe the public would get anything intelligible out of just sitting down and reading them one after another. Most of the limericks would not make much sense to the members of the public unless I was sitting at their elbow and explaining the background information that went along with the limerick.(For example, a lot of the limericks have to do with Kate Huffman, and they deal with the fact that Kate and her husband live in a huge mansion located in the far eastern part of Scottsdale where they often throw huge parties, and they also have to do with the fact Kate raises chickens on their acreage, and some of their neighbors raise camels and others raise llamas. A lot of the limericks about Kate do not themselves explain all these facts. They just use the words "chickens", "parties", "camels", "llamas", etc., etc, without any further explanation. As I say, such limericks would not make much sense to the members of the public, unless somebody like me was sitting at their elbow and explaining the background information.)The objective of the current book is to provide a publication that not only quotes and reorganizes all 45 limericks but also provides the background material that is necessary for understanding each of the limericks. Producing such a book allows me to reorganize and quote the limericks but also to editorialize and to provide the necessary background material. A unique piece of initial information concerns the limerick set out in Chapter 1. It is named "A Barrington Limerick". It is unique in that it was written while my family and I still lived back in Barrington, Illinois - long before we ever thought about moving to Arizona. It is pretty-much self-explanatory. Our next door neighbors in Barrington were a man named Laurie and his wife, and we all lived on the edge of a golf course in Barrington. After this limerick, I never wrote another limerick until 20-some years later when we had moved to Arizona and I was working in the Law Department of the Dial Corporation, at about the time that Kate Huffman joined the Law Department.

Book excerpt: This compelling book chronicles a young boy’s journey from the horrors of Jamaican slavery to the heart of London’s literary world, and reveals the unlikely friendship that changed his life. Francis Barber, born in Jamaica, was brought to London by his owner in 1750 and became a servant in the household of the renowned Dr. Samuel Johnson. Although Barber left London for a time and served in the British navy during the Seven Years’ War, he later returned to Johnson’s employ. A fascinating reversal took place in the relationship between the two men as Johnson’s health declined and the older man came to rely more and more upon his now educated and devoted companion. When Johnson died he left the bulk of his estate to Barber, a generous (and at the time scandalous) legacy, and a testament to the depth of their friendship. There were thousands of black Britons in the eighteenth century, but few accounts of their lives exist. In uncovering Francis Barber’s story, this book not only provides insights into his life and Samuel Johnson’s but also opens a window onto London when slaves had yet to win their freedom.

In the intrigue that follows, Avraham, now known as Razan, is not only barber to Stalin but also to the many Stalin look-alikes that the paranoid dictator circulates to thwart possible assassination attempts—including one from Razan himself.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book 2012 The rural town of Stockton, New York, is famous for nothing: no one was born there, no one died there, nothing of any historical import at all has ever happened there, which is why Solomon Kugel, like other urbanites fleeing their pasts and histories, decided to move his wife and young son there. To begin again. To start anew. But it isn’t quite working out that way for Kugel… His ailing mother stubbornly holds on to life, and won’t stop reminiscing about the Nazi concentration camps she never actually suffered through. To complicate matters further, some lunatic is burning down farmhouses just like the one Kugel bought, and when, one night, he discovers history—a living, breathing, thought-to-be-dead specimen of history—hiding upstairs in his attic, bad quickly becomes worse. Hope: A Tragedy is a hilarious and haunting examination of the burdens and abuse of history, propelled with unstoppable rhythm and filled with existential musings and mordant wit. It is a comic and compelling story of the hopeless longing to be free of those pasts that haunt our every present.

Book excerpt: Through stories and anecdotes, Jay Barber takes the reader into the world he once knew, a world the present generation can hardly believe existed only a few decades ago. Barber left that world at the age of 18 seeking to find a better one, but the memories of his youth and that place stuck to him like the waterline on the trees in the Islands swamps. He shares his childhood in Memories of the Islands while recording a history of the Barber family in Martin County, North Carolina, and their struggles to survive the Great Depression, the flood of 1940, and a number of family tragedies. Looking back, he realizes that his two worlds were connected like the swamps and the islands where he grew up. Factual and honest about the times and events, Memories of the Islands will pull at your heart strings and make you laugh, and it will jog the memory of the older generation about a time that was. Memories of the Islands is a book for all ages and for all times.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling examination of the revolutionary antidepressant, with a new introduction and afterword reflecting on Prozac’s legacy and the latest medical research “Peter Kramer is an analyst of exceptional sensitivity and insight. To read his prose on virtually any subject is to be provoked, enthralled, illuminated.” —Joyce Carol Oates When antidepressants like Prozac first became available, Peter D. Kramer prescribed them, only to hear patients say that on medication, they felt different—less ill at ease, more like the person they had always imagined themselves to be. Referencing disciplines from cellular biology to animal ethology, Dr. Kramer worked to explain these reports. The result was Listening to Prozac, a revolutionary book that offered new perspectives on antidepressants, mood disorders, and our understanding of the self—and that became an instant national and international bestseller. In this thirtieth anniversary edition, Dr. Kramer looks back at the influence of his groundbreaking book, traces progress in the relevant sciences, follows trends in the use and public understanding of antidepressants, and assesses potential breakthroughs in the treatment of depression. The new introduction and afterword reinforce and reinvigorate a book that the New York Times called “originally insightful” and “intelligent and informative,” a window on a medicine that is “telling us new things about the chemistry of human character.”
