Book excerpt: Frank Horvat (*1928 in Abbazia, today Opatija, Croatia), a pioneering fashion photographer and one of the first professional photographers to use Photoshop, can meanwhile look back at around seventy years of activity and a dazzling career. The grand seigneur now allows us very personal insight into his private life: the autobiography in pictures reveals personal moments from all phases of his life. We encounter the great themes of humankind, such as birth and death, are witness to his ability to play, and to handle animals, we see his family, his friends. They are everyday images like anyone could have assembled in an album. However, there is one slight difference: a master was clearly at work here early on, the quality of the photographs speaks for itself. In the appendix, Horvat comments, in most cases at length, on each of the chronologically ordered pictures.

Book excerpt: Every single day in 1999 Horvat photographed - creating a personal diary of the last year of the century. The challenge was to produce at least one image of substance. But, beyond this, as a committed European, he also wished to include images from all the countries in the European Union. The result is a fascinating and revealing panorama of the vision of one of the world's great photographers - a self portrait in a way - but also a sweeping vista of a continent nurtured by centuries of strong tradition. Illustrated with 480 colour plates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Capa regularly used colour film from the 1940s until his death in 1954. Some of these photographs were published in magazines of the day, but the majority have never been printed, seen, or even studied. "Capa in Color" presents this work an integral part of his post-war career and fundamental in remaining relevant to magazines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental philosophy is one of the most recent and controversial developments in philosophy. Its basic idea is rather simple: to test philosophical thought experiments and philosophers’ intuitions about them with scientific methods, mostly taken from psychology and the social sciences. The ensuing experimental results, such as the cultural relativity of certain philosophical intuitions, has engaged – and at times infuriated – many more traditionally minded "armchair" philosophers since then. In this volume, the metaphilosophical reflection on experimental philosophy is brought yet another step forward by engaging some of its most renowned proponents and critics in a lively and controversial debate. In addition to that, the volume also contains original experimental research on personal identity and philosophical temperament, as well as state-of-the-art essays on central metaphilosophical issues, like thought experiments, the nature of intuitions, or the status of philosophical expertise. This book was originally published as a special issue of Philosophical Psychology.

Book excerpt: The visionary and creative shots of day-to-day reality by a child of our time. Considered by many the most representative of Italian photographers, for almost fifty years Gianni Berengo Gardin has been a narrator attentive to everyday life in all its multiple aspects and in its evolution, having immortalized the story of Italy in over 1,250,000 pictures. For his work, he prefers black and white because "color distracts the photographer and the viewer." And the images are what counts. People, objects, close-ups, historical monuments. Images that are concrete, never abstract, but above all real images. It’s hard not to perceive the creative and visionary component of his snapshots, however much they are attentive to the day-to-day reality of humanity and its communities.

Handsome and collectible, the books each contain reproductions in color and/or duotone, plus a critical introduction and a bibliography. Paris in the early 1920s saw the growth of a new art form called surrealism. Both a formal movement and a spiritual orientation, surrealism embraced ethics and politics as well as the arts. Surrealists sought to create a medium that liberated the subconscious mind, and many artists and photographers captured this revolution through photographic images. This new survey includes works by Max Ernst, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, René Magritte, Meret Oppenheim, and more.

Book excerpt: This wonderfully small, thick book--like a box of photos--is divided up into the following categories: bonds (between partners and family members), icons (say, Jane Fonda as Barbarella), observations of glimpsed love or lust, come-ons to further naughtiness, tokens (mostly flowers juxtaposed with women), libidos (lusty acts), reveries (erotica), and obsessions (the sexual unusual). The international array of photographers includes Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Helmut Newton, Sally Mann, Immogen Cunningham, Brassai, and Julia Margaret Cameron. After a lengthy introduction on the history of photography and desire, there's nothing but photos there-on-in. You might just get aroused, or fascinated as to how others are aroused, or intrigued as to how far people go to arouse others. Ewing is director of the Musee de l'Elysee in Lausanne, Switzerland. Book excerpt: Only recently has fashion photography been accurately seen as an important medium within contemporary visual culture: it has evolved from a mere supporting role of reproduction into a creator of icons and ideas, and a veritable form of art. Its power, in defining itself as a means of communication, is to record, or even determine today's lifestyle. "Italian Eyes" not only shines a much-deserved light on Italians who have made photographic history, but also highlights an Italian style that goes beyond fashion, thus offering a repertoire of images that reconstruct the changes in fashion and the evolution of society from the end of World War II to the present. "Italian Eyes" presents the most important fashion magazines in the world and the advertising campaigns photographed for Italian and international designers--a sort of visual atlas of Italian evolution of fashion photography. Various chapters unfold with images accompanied by texts analyzing fashion photography according to different themes: portrait, narration, the fashion photo set, the evolution of masculine and feminine images, and others. Some of the featured photographers include: Maria Vittoria Backhaus, Aldo Ballo, Giampaolo Barbieri, Gabriele Basilico, Manfredi Bellati, Roberto Calabr/, Roberto Carra, Giovanna Calvenzi, Sergio Caminata, Lorenzo Capellini, Alfa Castaldi, Elisabetta Catalano, Attilio Concari, Maria Vittoria Corradi, Barbara D'Alessandri, Gianni Della Valle, Aldo Fallai, Marina Fausti, Fabrizio Ferri, Franco Fontana, Angelo Frontoni, Andrea Gandini, Giovanni Gastel, Piero Gemelli, Arturo Ghergo, Helsa Haertter, Aldo Giuliani, Marco Glaviano, Renato Grignaschi, Guido Harari, Frank Horvat, Bob Krieger, Giorgio Lari, Bodi Leombruno, Ugo Mulas, Carlo Orsi, Stefania Paparelli, Federico Patellani, Emanuela Pavesi, Alberto Rizzo, Paolo Roversi, Franco Rubartelli, Ferdinando Scianna, Tazio Secchiaroli, Susanna Sinclair, Mario Sorrenti, Valerio Spada, Toni Thoribert, Alberta Tiburzi, Oliviero Toscani and Fabio Zonta.
