Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now widely acknowledged that at the beginning of this century Claude von Pirquet first pointed out that a viral disease, i. e. , measles, resulted in an anergy or depression of preexisting immune response, namely, delayed continuous hypersensitivity to PPD derived from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Thereafter ob servations that viral infections may result in immunosuppression have been recorded by many clinicians and infectious disease investigators for six or seven decades. Nevertheless, despite sporadic reports that infectious diseases caused by viruses may result in either transient or prolonged immunodepression, investigation of this phenomenon languished until the mid-1960s, when it was pointed out that a number of experimental retroviral infections of mice with tumor viruses may result in marked immunosuppression. However, it was not until the recognition of the new epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syn drome (AIDS) caused by the human immunodeficiency virus and related vi ruses that acquired immunodeficiencies associated with virus infection became general knowledge among biomedical investigators as well as the lay public. A number of reviews published during the past decade or so pointed out that numerous viruses may affect humoral and cellular immune responses. Furthermore, expanding knowledge about the nature and mechanisms of both humoral and cellular immunity and pathogenesis of viral infections has pro vided clinical and experimental models for investigating in depth how and why viruses of man and animals profoundly affect immune responses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When hopes for motherhood are deferred... Childlessness remains a taboo topic in today’s culture, especially in Christian circles. Many women feel isolated, ashamed, or uncertain of how to reconcile this trial with a loving God. The death of the dream of motherhood—whether from infertility, barrenness, miscarriage, or the loss of a child—is one of the hardest journeys women can walk through. In Longing for Motherhood, Chelsea Patterson Sobolik speaks to these burdens specifically. She shares vulnerably about her own journey of childlessness and how she has ultimately come to view her story through the lens of Scripture and our hope in Christ. While remaining tender and empathetic toward suffering and longing, she discusses the comfort we have in knowing that the Lord is sovereign over all, and that His love is sufficient to carry us through any and every situation. A timely book for women struggling with childlessness, as well as for pastors, friends, and family who want to care for them well, Longing for Motherhood is a tender, truthful companion for a difficult journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now celebrating its twentieth year in print, this classic guidebook has helped thousands of ambitious hikers and climbers to summit as many of Colorado's fifty-four 14,000+ foot peaks as possible. For others, the guide has enhanced favorite weekend outings, where numbers of climbs matter less than the exhilaration of simply ""reaching the top""! In this twentieth anniversary edition, the foremost guide to the Fourteeners continues its longstanding emphasis on minimum impact routes and hiker responsibility. Walt Borneman is a founding director of the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, a non-profit volunteer organization that builds and maintains trails and teaches awareness about preserving these fragile alpine environments. Reflecting the group's goals, this anniversary edition offers climbers updated information about the established, minimum impact routes on each peak. Unlike other Fourteener guides grounded in technical mountaineering, this work continues to look at the place of each mountain in Colorado's history while focusing on the safest accessible routes. Time-tested route and elevation profiles, detailed maps, and captivating photos round out the volume. Twenty years after its first printing, A Climbing Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners remains the authoritative guide to Colorado's majestic peaks.

Now imagine doing just the oppositeclimbing during the stormiest part of each day and then sleeping on every Fourteener summit, from sunset to sunrise, in 95 days. With striking photography and expert analysis, the authors explain how they tracked and dodged storms above tree line, climbed with maximum efficiency, and were treated to 54 stunning sunsets and sunrises while perched at over 14,000 feet.

Book excerpt: The American West of the nineteenth century was a world of freedom and adventure for men of every stripe—not least also those who admired and desired other men. Among these sojourners was William Drummond Stewart, a flamboyant Scottish nobleman who found in American culture of the 1830s and 1840s a cultural milieu of openness in which men could pursue same-sex relationships. This book traces Stewart’s travels from his arrival in America in 1832 to his return to Murthly Castle in Perthshire, Scotland, with his French Canadian–Cree Indian companion, Antoine Clement, one of the most skilled hunters in the Rockies. Benemann chronicles Stewart’s friendships with such notables as Kit Carson, William Sublette, Marcus Whitman, and Jim Bridger. He describes the wild Renaissance-costume party held by Stewart and Clement upon their return to America—a journey that ended in scandal. Through Stewart’s letters and novels, Benemann shows that Stewart was one of many men drawn to the sexual freedom offered by the West. His book provides a tantalizing new perspective on the Rocky Mountain fur trade and the role of homosexuality in shaping the American West.
