Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Bacon's Contribution to Shakespeare advocates a paradigm shift away from a single-author theory of the Shakespeare work towards a many-hands theory. Here, the middle ground is adopted between competing so-called Stratfordian and alternative single-author conspiracy theories. In the process, arguments are advanced as to why Shakespeare’s First Folio (1623) presents as an unreliable document for attribution, and why contemporary opinion characterised Shakspere [his baptised name] as an opportunist businessman who acquired the work of others. Current methods of authorship attribution are critiqued, and an entirely new Rare Collocation Profiling (RCP) method is introduced which, unlike current stylometric methods, is capable of detecting multiple contributors to a text. Using the Early English Books Online database, rare phrases and collocations in a target text are identified together with the authors who used them. This allows a DNA-type profile to be constructed for the possible contributors to a text that also takes into account direction of influence. The method brings powerful new evidence to bear on crucial questions such as the author of the Groats-worth of Witte (1592) letter, the identifiable hands in 3 Henry VI, the extent of Francis Bacon’s contribution to Twelfth Night and The Tempest, and the scheduling of Love’s Labour’s Lost at the 1594–5 Gray’s Inn Christmas revels for which Bacon wrote entertainments. The treatise also provides detailed analyses of the nature of the complaint against Shakspere in the Groats-worth letter, the identity of the players who performed The Comedy of Errors at Gray’s Inn in 1594, and the reasons why Shakspere could not have had access to Virginia colony information that appears in The Tempest. With a Foreword by Sir Mark Rylance, this meticulously researched and penetrating study is a thought-provoking read for the inquisitive student in Shakespeare Studies.

Book excerpt: Contemporaries of English polymath Sir Francis Bacon (1561–1626) eulogized him as “a muse more choice than the nine muses” who “showered the age with frequent volumes” and “filled the world with works”; “the very nerve of genius, the marrow of persuasion, the golden stream of eloquence, the precious gem of hidden literature.” Orthodox scholars credit Bacon with a substantial body of anonymous writing; more controversially, everything from Shakespeare to Don Quixote to The Anatomy of Melancholy has been ascribed to him. Here we explore parallel lines of thought and expression between Bacon’s acknowledged works and others of the period; whether these correspondences are sufficient to indicate common authorship or merely mutual influences, they constitute a cross section of a uniquely fruitful period in world literature.

Book excerpt: With a new introduction by Thomas Mallon Dubin's Lives (1979) is a compassionate and wry commedia, a book praised by Christopher Lehmann-Haupt in The New York Times as Malamud's "best novel since The Assistant. Possibly, it is the best he has written of all." Its protagonist is one of Malamud's finest characters; prize-winning biographer William Dubin, who learns from lives, or thinks he does: those he writes, those he shares, the life he lives. Now in his later middle age, he seeks his own secret self, and the obsession of biography is supplanted by the obsession of love--love for a woman half is age, who has sought an understanding of her life through his books. Dubin's Lives is a rich, subtle book, as well as a moving tale of love and marriage.

Book excerpt: What evidence is there that Miguel de Cervantes wrote Don Quixote? There is no manuscript, no letter, no diary, no will, no document that proves that he wrote this masterpiece. There is no portrait, no marked grave, and no record of any payment for Don Quixote, although it became popular in Spain and abroad during his lifetime. What do we know about Thomas Shelton, whose translation has won the praise of literary historians ever since it appeared in this country in 1612? What do we know of Cid Hamet Benengeli, the Arabian historian, who, we are told by Cervantes, is the real author?Until now no proper attempt has been made to place Don Quixote in the wider context of European literature, of the great works of writers and dramatists of this period. And no-one has studied the Shelton text. which is seldom read today. After an examination of the actual publication of this work in Madrid and in London, revealing a surprising proximity in dates of registration, the story of Don Quixote's adventures in Spain is looked into, and some surprising details emerge, which show a remarkable understanding of English history and English folklore. The story takes us from La Mancha to Sussex, from Madrid to London, to the court of Queen Elizabeth and King James.

It includes writers of wide-ranging literary status (from high cultural icons like Virgil, Dante, Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Proust to popular novelists like Clive Barker and Dashiell Hammett) and of various locations (from Mishima s Tokyo and Abu Nuwas s Baghdad to David Leavitt s New York). It also deals with representations of male-male love by writers who were not themselves homosexual or bisexual men.

In 1576, he published Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner & maintenir en paix un Royaume, ou autre Principauté, Contre Nicolas Machiavel Florentin, popularly known as Anti-Machiavel. Despite a papal ban in 1605, Anti-Machiavel went through twenty-four editions in French, Latin, English, German, and Dutch; it was read and used by Montaigne and Shakespeare. This edition presents Simon Patericke’s 1602 English translation, revised for modern spelling and grammar, and explores Anti-Machiavel’s connections with other works of the period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth history of Rosicrucianism, its key members, and their roles in the formation and settling of America • Explores Sir Francis Bacon and Dr. John Dee’s deep influence on England’s colonization of America as well as the Rosicrucian influence on the Founding Fathers and on cities such as Philadelphia and Williamsburg • Explains how Bacon was the author of many anonymous Rosicrucian texts and how he envisioned America as the “New Atlantis” • Reveals the connections of the Order of the Rosy Cross to the Knights of the Golden Circle and to the Georgia Guidestones Dr. John Dee and his polymath protégé Sir Francis Bacon were the most influential men in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, part of an elite group with invisible control throughout Europe. And, as Steven Sora reveals, not only were they key members of the Rosicrucians, they were the driving force behind England’s colonization of the New World and the eventual establishment of the United States. From Avalon in Newfoundland to New England to Pennsylvania and Virginia, Sora shows how Bacon and Dee’s Rosicrucian impact is felt throughout North America. He details Bacon’s possible authorship of the anonymous Rosicrucian texts of the early 1600s, his connections with Sir Walter Raleigh’s School of Night, and the origins of Rosicrucianism in Bacon’s Order of the Helmet. He explains how Bacon envisioned America as the New Atlantis, a utopia where liberty and freedom of learning prevailed--a key tenet of the “Invisible College” of the Rosicrucian Order--and how Dee convinced the Queen that England had rightful claims in the New World by drawing on legends of both King Arthur and Welsh Prince Madoc voyaging West to America. Sora looks at Rosicrucian influences on the Founding Fathers and earliest settlers of America, such as Washington, Franklin, and William Penn of Pennsylvania, on the American Revolution, and on American colonies, such as the Williamsburg colony. He details how Penn invited Rosicrucians to Philadelphia and how the city’s layout follows esoteric principles, including a direct reference to Bacon’s New Atlantis. Moving into the 1800s and beyond, he reveals how a handful of Rosicrucians served as the Inner Sanctum of the Knights of the Golden Circle and how Rosicrucians are behind the Georgia Guidestones, carved granite monoliths with messages in ancient languages. Providing a thorough and expansive view of Rosicrucianism, its occult origins, and its deep imprint on America, Sora shows how this secret society still continues to exert invisible influence on the modern world.
