There may be no greater illustration of this than the understanding of American Methodists about their founding father, Francis Asbury. His fate among his own people has been largely one of neglect. Yet he is one of the most important men in the history of the Christian church, particularly in the development of American Christianity.John Wesley sent Francis Asbury, a young man of 26, to the American colonies in 1771. At that time there were four Methodist preachers in the thirteen colonies caring for about three hundred people. By 1813, three years before Asbury's death, official Methodist records report 171,448 white and 42,850 African-American members "in full society." By that time, according to historian Mark Noll, one out of every eight Americans-some one million persons-were attending Methodist camp meetings each year. Noll continues by insisting that by 1860, Methodism had become "the most pervasive form of Christianity in the United States." Methodism, as no other single religious tradition, helped shape the character of American religious life. The key to it all was Francis Asbury. As a young man in October 1771, the Englishman traveled to America and, during his 45 years there, he devoted his life to ministry, traveling on horseback and by carriage thousands of miles to those living on the frontier. Asbury spread Methodism in America, as part of the Second Great Awakening. He also founded several schools during his lifetime, although his own formal education was limited. His journal is valuable to scholars for its account of frontier society.

Book excerpt: In 1926, while a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune, Herbert Asbury, great-great-nephew of Francis Asbury, the first American Bishop of the Methodist Church, submitted a chapter of his profane work-in-progress, an almost spiteful memoir of his boyhood in the Ozark town of Farmington, Missouri, to H.L Mencken's American Mercury magazine. Mencken published "Hatrack," the story of the town's prostitute, in the April issue. The Mercury was then banned in Boston at the incitement of J. Frank Chase, the head of the New England Watch and Ward Society, who called the story "bad, vile, raw stuff." Mencken was arrested selling the magazine to Chase on Boston Common in a stunt designed to provoke the free-speech trials that followed. In its restrained, but unrelenting attack on religious bigotry, irrationality, and hypocrisy, the book that was published soon thereafter retains its transgressive power today. Its taunting title, playing on Booker T. Washington's early-century bestseller Up from Slavery, gives an idea of what Asbury thought he had escaped. In his mocking humor and plain-spun language, used to evoke a bygone South suffocating in its fear of pleasure and damnation, Asbury reveals his debt to another son of Missouri, Mark Twain.
