Book Synopsis The Latin Church in Norman Italy by : G. A. Loud
Download or read book The Latin Church in Norman Italy written by G. A. Loud and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-20 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2007, this was the first significant study of the incorporation of the Church in southern Italy into the mainstream of Latin Christianity during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Professor G. A. Loud examines the relationship between Norman rulers, south Italian churchmen and the external influence of the new 'papal monarchy'. He discusses the impact of the creation of the new kingdom of Sicily in 1130; the tensions that arose from the papal schism of that era; and the religious policy and patronage of the new monarchs. He also explores the internal structures of the Church, both secular and monastic, and the extent and process of Latinisation within the Graecophone areas of the mainland and on the island of Sicily, where at the time of the Norman conquest the majority of the population was Muslim. This is a major contribution to the political, religious and cultural history of the Central Middle Ages.
Book Synopsis The Franciscans in the Middle Ages by : Michael J. P. Robson
Download or read book The Franciscans in the Middle Ages written by Michael J. P. Robson and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Francis of Assisi is one of the most admired figures of the Middle Ages - and one of the most important in the Christian church, modelling his life on the literal observance of the Gospel and recovering an emphasis on the poverty experienced by Jesus Christ. From 1217 Francis sent communities of friars throughout Christendom and launched missions to several countries, including India and China. The movement soon became established in most cities and several large towns, and, enjoying close relations with the popes, its followers were ideal instruments for the propagation of the reforms of the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215. They quickly became part of the landscape of medieval life and made their influence felt throughout society.BR>This book explores the first 250 years of the order's history and charts its rapid growth, development, pastoral ministry, educational organisation, missionary endeavour, internal tensions and divisions. Intended for both the general and more specialist reader, it offers a complete survey of the Franciscan Order. Dr MICHAEL ROBSON is a Fellow and Director of Studies in Theology at St Edmund's College, Cambridge

Book Synopsis The Sermon by : Beverly Mayne Kienzle
Download or read book The Sermon written by Beverly Mayne Kienzle and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central literary genre in the life of medieval Christians and Jews, the sermon is an exceedingly rich but until recently under-utiliezd source for scholars of medieval culture. Extant in thousands of unedited manuscripts, sermons provide cruscial insights into the mentalities of medieval people: yet they also pose difficult methodological challenges. The Sermon, volume 81-83 in the series Typologie des sources du moyen age occidental, offers both a practical guide to methodology and extensive coverage of both Latin and vernacular texts. This significant work provides a bridge from sermonists to other scholars, inviting them into the study of this exciting and challenging genre. The Sermon provides guidelines for historical criticism that apply to the sermon genre. An extensive bibliography of works pertinent to the genre, opens the volume; it is divided into sections corresponding to the subsequent chapters. The book's Introduction focuses on the definition of the genre, attempting to establish a working typology of the sermon both as a literary genre and as a medieval text. The Jewish Sermon precedes the chapter on Christian sermons: for the latter the genre's development from Latin to the vernacular serves as the organizational guide. The Latin Sermon is represented in: Early Medieval Homilies and Homiliaries, The Twelfth-Century Monastic Sermon, the Sermons of the Twelfth-Century Schoolmasters and Canons, and the Latin Sermons after 1200. The chapter of medieval preaching in Italy encompasses both Latin and vernacular sermons, and the several chapters devoted to vernacular texts include: Old English; Middle English; Old Norse; French; Spanish; Portuguese and Catalan; and German.Several topics are discussed in each chapter: the definition of the genre, its development, its diffusion, its value for historians, the principal editions and/or manuscripts.

Book Synopsis Humanist Taste and Franciscan Values by : Corrie E. Norman
Download or read book Humanist Taste and Franciscan Values written by Corrie E. Norman and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cornelio Musso (1511-1574) has been hailed by his own and subsequent generations as a «Michelangelo of words, » «a modern Demosthenes, » and the «Chrysostom of the Italians» who brought humanist style and rhetoric to bear on Italian preaching. When Musso discussed preaching, however, he emphasized the values of his Franciscan Order. This study describes the influence of the Franciscan preaching tradition and the relationships between the tastes of Musso's humanist culture and the values of his Franciscan heritage in his sermons. It makes the case for emphasizing continuity with the traditions of the medieval preaching orders as well as humanistic innovations for understanding early modern Catholic preaching.
