Book excerpt: Excerpt from France, the Apostle, and the Ethics of the War Among the many lectures and speeches which the author has delivered in Great Britain during the war, for the purpose of the war, he has chosen for publication the three which appear in this volume, first, for the sake of the honour done him by the Royal Institution in inviting him to address it, and, second, because the subject of these discourses is dealt with in as full and detailed a manner as the haste entailed by the duties and necessities of the time permitted. A certain discrepancy of tone and style will be perceived between the essays. It flows from the difference in their composition and delivery. All three were delivered extempore, but the first, France the Apostle, was spoken in French and afterwards written out in that language and revised by the author; it has now been translated into English in order to render it more generally accessible. On the other hand, the two lectures which make up the essay, The Ethics of the War, were spoken by the author in English and taken down by a stenographer; and the text so recorded was afterwards retouched and enlarged by the speaker. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenneth Vaux elucidates the great just war traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, evaluating the key events of the Gulf War in light of the religious rhetoric used by both sides. Religious and ethical appeals played a major role in winning support not just of the U.S. and Iraqi peoples but of public opinion worldwide. Vaux demonstrates the wide gap between the religious rhetoric and the political-military action it was called on to support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir James G. Frazer's The Golden Bough, first published in 1890, was the first work in English to understand the religion of classical antiquity in the context of primitive religion. Its dramatic impact on the history of ideas lasted well into the twentieth century, in its association of religious myths with the more primitive forms of ritual and magic generated by the 'savage mind', identified as a common misunderstanding of the scientific laws governing the natural world. This highly acclaimed biography is a comprehensive study of Frazer's life, the influences on his work, and its wide-ranging implications for modern anthropology, classics, cultural history and folklore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did Jesus mean when he said to “love your enemies” and “pray for those who persecute you”? Do these commandments leave room for Christians to serve in militaries or police forces that implement the use of force? Or is the Christian to steadfastly reject violence and embrace pacifism? Are certain wars justified on the basis of just war theory, or are all wars, in their brutality and destruction, inherently evil? In this study, Harold Palmer, an attorney, examines the case that has traditionally been made to justify Christian participation in war. The author begins with a historical background of the roots of just war theory as promulgated by Thomas Aquinas. He then examines the passages on which just war theorists rely, including God’s commandments to the Israelites to go to war against their enemies, Jesus’ praise of the Roman Army centurion for his faith and God’s use of the centurion Cornelius to graft Gentiles into the Kingdom of God. Arguing that these passages have been misunderstood, he concludes that Christianity only permits a single response to evil—self-sacrificial love. The author makes a cogent case for Christian pacifism by examining the life of Jesus and arguing that His crucifixion was more than a salvific act; it also exemplified the ideal of Christian living. Being a disciple of Jesus means emulating Him in every way, including responding to violence through self-sacrificial love, as Jesus did, and obeying Jesus’ commands to be as “harmless as doves,” to “turn the other cheek” and “pray for those who persecute you.” Finally, this study tackles the difficult question of Old Testament violence by arguing that it falls within a specific context and is not normative for members of the New Covenant of Grace. Rather than embrace violence, we are to follow the examples set by the early church and its martyrs, including the Apostle Stephen, who prayed that his persecutors not be charged with their sins, and the apostle Paul, who taught us to “live peaceably with all men.” Our war is not a physical struggle, but a spiritual war to be waged with prayer, faith and the gospel of peace (Eph 6:12-18).
