Please note: This book is a bilingual picture book with a 1:1 translation created by human translators (see translator's credits for details).

Book excerpt: Written as a kind of historical narrative in verse, the poems in this collection depict the coming of age and sexual awareness of the great Italian writer and film director, Pier Paolo Pasolini. The time of this story is World War II; the place is German-occupied northern Italy. Unlike his younger brother, Guido, who took up arms to fight in the resistance, Pasolini chose to help his mother set up a school for the boys too young to fight or be conscripted. The situation ignited an internal war for the young Pasolini that nearly eclipsed the historical moment: a battle within between his desire for boys and his Catholic faith and culture. In addition to the poems that juxtapose Pasolini’s struggle against the backdrop of political and cultural fascism, the book also includes a prologue and an epilogue that details the author’s pilgrimage to the site and her research into the time that shaped Pasolini as a man and as an artist.

This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negritude has been defined by Léopold Sédar Senghor as "the sum of the cultural values of the black world as they are expressed in the life, the institutions, and the works of black men." Sylvia Washington Bâ analyzes Senghor's poetry to show how the concept of negritude infuses it at every level. A biographical sketch describes his childhood in Senegal, his distinguished academic career in France, and his election as President of Senegal. Themes of alienation and exile pervade Senghor's poetry, but it was by the opposition of his sensitivity and values to those of Europe that he was able to formulate his credo. Its key theme, and the supreme value of black African civilization, is the concept of life forces, which are not attributes or accidents of being, but the very essence of being. Life is an essentially dynamic mode of being for the black African, and it has been Senghor's achievement to communicate African intensity and vitality through his use of the nuances, subtleties, and sonorities of the French language. In the final chapter Sylvia Washington Bâ discusses the future of Senghor's belief that the black man's culture should be recognized as valid not simply as a matter of human justice, but because the values of negritude could be instrumental in the reintegration of positive values into western civilization and the reorientation of contemporary man toward life and love. Its place is just next to Alfred Prufrock and Other Observations, The Elegies of Duino, Signe ascendant by Andre Breton and other important books of poetry of this century. Although it has been translated into English at various occassions, Antonio Mazza's translation should be praised and recognized as one of the best. Mazza has been translating Montale for some years. this choice would seem to be a matter of faithfulness to the voice whose language, also Mazza's mother tongue, is Italian, with all its musical, rhythmical, incantatory and lexical implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonized black people the world over have long had to express themselves in the tongue of the colonizer. In the case of the French language, the influence stretched from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, with its obvious center situated in Africa. The present volume, which is the fruit of over a decade's dedicated effort, gathers together, in English translation, twenty-seven poets, associated with that cultural and intellectual movement which since the close of World War II has come to be known as "negritude". The term "negritude" was coined by Aimé Césaire in his long poem "Notes on a Return to the Native Land", which was published in France in 1944 ... While the present volume, for historical and cultural reasons, has a special significance, it also is, and should be taken as, an anthology of poetry. (Book jacket).

Book excerpt: -- With support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council of the UK and the Deutsches Historisches Institut Moskau --The French Language in Russia provides the fullest examination and discussion to date of the adoption of the French language by the elites of imperial Russia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is interdisciplinary, approaching its subject from the angles of various kinds of history and historical sociolinguistics. Beyond its bearing on some of the grand narratives of Russian thought and literature, this book may afford more general insight into the social, political, cultural, and literary implications and effects of bilingualism in a speech community over a long period. It should also enlarge understanding of francophonie as a pan-European phenomenon. On the broadest plane, it has significance in an age of unprecedented global connectivity, for it invites us to look beyond the experience of a single nation and the social groups and individuals within it in order to discover how languages and the cultures and narratives associated with them have been shared across national boundaries.

Book excerpt: This new edition, published on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding by Melville Herskovits of the Program of African Studies at Northwestern University, brings back into print one of the classics in scholarly analysis and translation, written by one of the cultural anthropology. When this book was first published in 1958, Melville luminaries of American Herskovits, with his wife and collaborator, Frances, had spent over Twenty years studying the social networks, language, and oral traditions of the peoples of West Africa and their descendants in the New World. Dahomey, the major site of their African work, is in the country now known as the Republic of Benin. This volume, had two goals: in its collection of 155 narratives, to provide basic texts of the analytical side, to provide a general theory of mythology using new oral narratives and looking at their tradition culminating in a survey of different prevailing Theories of myth. The result is a wide-ranging collection, culled from an entire narrative tradition, that remains unique among anthropological publications.
