This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first ICM was held in Zürich in 1897, it has become the pinnacle of mathematical gatherings. It aims at giving an overview of the current state of different branches of mathematics and its applications as well as an insight into the treatment of special problems of exceptional importance. The proceedings of the ICMs have provided a rich chronology of mathematical development in all its branches and a unique documentation of contemporary research. They form an indispensable part of every mathematical library. The Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians 1994, held in Zürich from August 3rd to 11th, 1994, are published in two volumes. Volume I contains an account of the organization of the Congress, the list of ordinary members, the reports on the work of the Fields Medalists and the Nevanlinna Prize Winner, the plenary one-hour addresses, and the invited addresses presented at Section Meetings 1 - 6. Volume II contains the invited address for Section Meetings 7 - 19. A complete author index is included in both volumes. '...the content of these impressive two volumes sheds a certain light on the present state of mathematical sciences and anybody doing research in mathematics should look carefully at these Proceedings. For young people beginning research, this is even more important, so these are a must for any serious mathematics library. The graphical presentation is, as always with Birkhäuser, excellent....' Book Synopsis Rhyme and Reason in Reading and Spelling by : Lynette Bradley
Download or read book Rhyme and Reason in Reading and Spelling written by Lynette Bradley and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursery rhymes have been told to children for centuries. Many people think that they are just meant to make children smile. However, preschool children's awareness of rhyme and alliteration has an important influence on their success in learning to read and to spell. In Rhyme and Reason in Reading and Spelling, the authors explore this causal hypothesis using a new research design of combining longitudinal methods with intervention, and they provide strong evidence to show that there is a positive relationship between recognizing similar sounds, as found in nursery rhymes, and learning to read and to spell. The authors also investigate the relationship of this skill to children's learning difficulties. This is the first volume in the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities Monograph series.
Book Synopsis Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations by : Luis A. Caffarelli
Download or read book Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations written by Luis A. Caffarelli and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the book is to extend classical regularity theorems for solutions of linear elliptic partial differential equations to the context of fully nonlinear elliptic equations. This class of equations often arises in control theory, optimization, and other applications. The authors give a detailed presentation of all the necessary techniques. Instead of treating these techniques in their greatest generality, they outline the key ideas and prove the results needed for developing the subsequent theory. Topics discussed in the book include the theory of viscosity solutions for nonlinear equations, the Alexandroff estimate and Krylov-Safonov Harnack-type inequality for viscosity solutions, uniqueness theory for viscosity solutions, Evans and Krylov regularity theory for convex fully nonlinear equations, and regularity theory for fully nonlinear equations with variable coefficients.

Download or read book Out of India written by Jamila Gavin and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2002 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I am truly a child of both countries and both cultures.' Born to an Indian father and an English mother, Jamila Gavin's childhood was divided between two worlds. Her earliest memories are of India, where she lived in a crumbling palace built for a prince, and learned to steal sugar cane and suck mangoes. But she would spend much of her childhood in England, where she picked blackberries, got chilblains, and learned to recognise doodlebug bombs. And between the two there were unforgettable journeys, by bullock carts and tongas, crowded trains and romantic P&O liners. A touching and very personal recollection, with a backdrop of world-shaking events, from the Blitz of World War II to the struggle for Indian independence and the assassination of Gandhi. Illustrated with the author's own delightful photographs.
Book Synopsis Probabilistic Proof Systems by : Oded Goldreich
Download or read book Probabilistic Proof Systems written by Oded Goldreich and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2008 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various types of probabilistic proof systems have played a central role in the development of computer science in the last couple of decades. These proof systems deviate from the traditional concept of a proof by introducing randomization and interaction into the verification process. Probabilistic proof systems carry an error probability (which is explicitly bounded and can be decreased by repetitions), but they offer various advantages over deterministic proof systems. This primer concentrates on three types of probabilistic proof systems: interactive proofs, zero-knowledge proofs, and probabilistically checkable proofs (PCP). Surveying the basic results regarding these proof systems, the primer stresses the essential role of randomness in each of them.
Book Synopsis Lexicon of Reconstructed Pronunciation by : Edwin G. Pulleyblank
Download or read book Lexicon of Reconstructed Pronunciation written by Edwin G. Pulleyblank and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1991-06-01 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for his pioneering work in Chinese historical phonetics, Edwin Pulleyblank has compiled this Lexicon to present in convenient dictionary form the result of his researches on the phonology of Middle Chinese and its evolution to Mandarin. The Lexicon complements Pulleyblank's earlier book, Middle Chinese, by providing reconstructed pronunciation for approximately 8,000 Chinese characters at three historical stages. Early Middle Chinese is the language of the Qieyun rhyme dictionary of AD 601, which codified the standard literary language of both North and South China the preceding period of division. Pulleyblank's reconstruction is a thorough reworking of that of Bernhard Karlgren, completed in the twenties, and in some respects differs radically from it. Late Middle Chinese is the standard language of the High Tang Dynasty, based on the dialect of the capital, Chang'an. It has not been reconstructed previously as a separate stage but is of special importance, since it is the ancestor of most modern dialects. Early Mandarin represents the speech of the Yuan capital, Dadu (present Beijing), around the year 1300, for which Pulleyblank's reconstruction differs considerably from that of Hugh M. Stimson. The sources and methods used in these reconstructions were fully discussed in Middle Chinese, but recent developments in phonological theory have led to some modifications in detail. The entries are arranged alphabetically according to the Pinyin system with an index, by the traditional Kangxi radical and stroke numbers. The Morohashi number is also given for each character, enabling easy reference to this important Chinese thesaurus. Another useful feature of the Lexicon is the inclusion of the numbers in Karlgren's Grammata Serica for characters that are included in that work. Concise English equivalents for the Chinese words are also provided. Reconstructed forms are given in the International Phonetic Alphabet. Though this requires a number of phonetic signs and diacritical marks, these are carefully explained in the introduction. Every effort has been made to provide a useful tool for students of Chinese literature and China's relations with foreign countries, as well as for specialists in Chinese linguistics.
Book Synopsis The Popularization of Mathematics by : A. G. Howson

Book Synopsis The Riemann-Hilbert Problem by : D. V. Anosov
Download or read book The Riemann-Hilbert Problem written by D. V. Anosov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Riemann-Hilbert problem (Hilbert's 21st problem) belongs to the theory of linear systems of ordinary differential equations in the complex domain. The problem concerns the existence of a Fuchsian system with prescribed singularities and monodromy. Hilbert was convinced that such a system always exists. However, this turned out to be a rare case of a wrong forecast made by him. In 1989 the second author (A. B.) discovered a counterexample, thus obtaining a negative solution to Hilbert's 21st problem in its original form.

Book Synopsis A History of the Korean Language by : Ki-Moon Lee
Download or read book A History of the Korean Language written by Ki-Moon Lee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Korean Language is the first book on the subject ever published in English. It traces the origin, formation, and various historical stages through which the language has passed, from Old Korean through to the present day. Each chapter begins with an account of the historical and cultural background. A comprehensive list of the literature of each period is then provided and the textual record described, along with the script or scripts used to write it. Finally, each stage of the language is analyzed, offering new details supplementing what is known about its phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon. The extraordinary alphabetic materials of the 15th and 16th centuries are given special attention, and are used to shed light on earlier, pre-alphabetic periods.
