Book excerpt: In the quiet countryside of Barsetshire, controversy stirs within the tranquil walls of Hiram's Hospital, a charitable institution for elderly men. The source of contention lies in the generous income the warden Mr. Harding receives from the hospital's endowment, which some argue is excessive for his duties. As public opinion mounts against him, led by the zealous reformer John Bold, Mr. Harding finds himself torn between his sense of duty to the hospital's residents and the moral scrutiny of the broader community. Anthony Trollope's insightful portrayal of characters and moral dilemmas unfolds against a backdrop of pastoral beauty and societal scrutiny. The Warden is a timeless exploration of justice, compassion, and the clash between tradition and reform in a small English town, showcasing Trollope's mastery of psychological depth and social commentary. ANTHONY TROLLOPE [1815-1882] was an English novelist and civil servant. Among his most famous works is the series known as The Chronicles of Barsetshire, in which he delves into the intricacies of rural and ecclesiastical life.

Book Synopsis A Natural History of the Romance Novel by : Pamela Regis
Download or read book A Natural History of the Romance Novel written by Pamela Regis and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The romance novel has the strange distinction of being the most popular but least respected of literary genres. While it remains consistently dominant in bookstores and on best-seller lists, it is also widely dismissed by the critical community. Scholars have alleged that romance novels help create subservient readers, who are largely women, by confining heroines to stories that ignore issues other than love and marriage. Pamela Regis argues that such critical studies fail to take into consideration the personal choice of readers, offer any true definition of the romance novel, or discuss the nature and scope of the genre. Presenting the counterclaim that the romance novel does not enslave women but, on the contrary, is about celebrating freedom and joy, Regis offers a definition that provides critics with an expanded vocabulary for discussing a genre that is both classic and contemporary, sexy and entertaining. Taking the stance that the popular romance novel is a work of literature with a brilliant pedigree, Regis asserts that it is also a very old, stable form. She traces the literary history of the romance novel from canonical works such as Richardson's Pamela through Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Brontë's Jane Eyre, and E. M. Hull's The Sheik, and then turns to more contemporary works such as the novels of Georgette Heyer, Mary Stewart, Janet Dailey, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Nora Roberts.

Book Synopsis The Lost Landscape by : Joyce Carol Oates
Download or read book The Lost Landscape written by Joyce Carol Oates and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written with the raw honesty and poignant insight that were the hallmarks of her acclaimed bestseller A Widow’s Story, an affecting and observant memoir of growing up from one of our finest and most beloved literary masters. The Lost Landscape is Joyce Carol Oates’ vivid chronicle of her hardscrabble childhood in rural western New York State. From memories of her relatives, to those of a charming bond with a special red hen on her family farm; from her first friendships to her earliest experiences with death, The Lost Landscape is a powerful evocation of the romance of childhood, and its indelible influence on the woman and the writer she would become. In this exceptionally candid, moving, and richly reflective account, Oates explores the world through the eyes of her younger self, an imaginative girl eager to tell stories about the world and the people she meets. While reading Alice in Wonderland changed a young Joyce forever and inspired her to view life as a series of endless adventures, growing up on a farm taught her harsh lessons about sacrifice, hard work, and loss. With searing detail and an acutely perceptive eye, Oates renders her memories and emotions with exquisite precision, transporting us to a forgotten place and time—the lost landscape of her youth, reminding us of the forgotten landscapes of our own earliest lives.
