Er hatte ei-nen weiten Horizont - in der Zeit, die er in der Tiefe ausgelotet hat, - in den geographischen Weiten, in denen er die europäischen Grenzen hinter sich gelassen hat, - in den Inhalten, die er nie bloß als optisch-künstlerische Phänomene, verhaftet in der Vergangenheit, begriffen hat. Schon in der Schulzeit, die er 1958 mit dem Abitur beendete, zeigte sich sein weitgespanntes Interesse. Er erlernte zusätzlich Hebräisch und Assyrisch. Sein Studium führte ihn zunächst nach Münster, dann über München nach Wien, wo er 1966 mit einer Dissertation über die Landschaften des italienischen Barockmalers Domenichino promovierte - ein The-ma, das sich vor dem Hintergrund seiner weiteren wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn ungewöhnlich ausnimmt. In den folgenden Jahren führten ihn Vorträge, verbunden mit Studienaufenthalten und Lehrtätigkeit, an viele Orte: Nach New York an das Metropolitan Museum, nach London in das Warburg Institute, nach Moskau und St. Peters-burg und in alle Hauptstädte des Balkans. Drei große Bereiche waren die Schwerpunkte seiner Forschungen, das Mittelalter, die Kunst Armeniens und die Zeit des frühen Christentums. Die Hauptthemen des Mittelalters waren Buchmalerei, Emailarbeiten und byzantinische Fresken. Als besonders hervorzuhebende Früchte dieser Arbeit seien vor allem das mit dem Staatspreis ausgezeichnete, opulente Buch über den Altar des Nikolaus von Verdun im Stift Klosterneuburg genannt und das Buch über die Marienkirche in Apollonia, einer im ersten Jahrtausend v. Chr. gegründeten griechischen Kolonialstadt im heutigen Albanien, die schon früh zum Bischofsitz wurde. Das Buch über Die süditalienische Bauplastik im König-reich Jerusalem von König Wilhelm II. bis Kaiser Friedrich II. zeigt die hohe Qualität der Kunst der Kreuzfahrer, beantwortet wichtige historische Fragen und ist von hohem doku-mentarischem Wert, da inzwischen die meisten Kreuzfahrermonumente auf dem Tempel-platz in Jerusalem entfernt, beschädigt oder vernichtet worden sind. Die Kunst und Buchmalerei Armeniens hat Helmut Buschhausen wohl am längsten und intensivsten beschäftigt. Neben vielen wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen hat er fünf Bücher zu diesem Thema verfasst, unter anderen die wissenschaftlich kommentierte repräsentative Ausgabe des Etschmiadzin-Evangeliars des Matenadaran in Erewan, des bedeutendsten Werks der armenischen Buchkunst, und schließlich sein letztes, 2009 geschriebenes Buch über die armenische Buchmalerei und Baukunst auf der Halbinsel Krim. Bis dahin war die-ser künstlerische Bereich noch völlig unbekannt und unerforscht. Außerdem wirkte Helmut Buschhausen an drei großen Ausstellungen zur armenischen Kunst mit, denn die allgemein verständliche Vermittlung kunsthistorischer Inhalte an eine breite Öffentlichkeit war ihm immer ein sehr großes Anliegen. In reference to two of the most prominent, against the organizers of the exhibitions 'Caution, Religion!' and 'Forbidden Art 2006', the author examines the ways in which the meaning of art and its socio-political effects are argued in court: How do these trials attempt to establish a normative concept of art, and furthermore a binding juridical understanding of art? How is the discussion of what is permissible in art being framed in Russia today? Research into the post-Soviet art trials has been mainly journal-driven until today. Only the fairly recent trials of the Pussy Riot activists and Pyotr Pavlensky provoked lengthy publications, but these are mostly concerned with explicitly political and activist art rather than its particular discourse when on trial. This book, however, takes a scholarly approach towards (Russian) art on trial. It puts the cases in a national-historical context, which is compared from international perspectives, and particularly focuses on the way in which these proceedings have intensified juridical power over artistic freedom (of speech) in the production of art in Russia. This book will appeal to academics and students in the areas of art history, cultural science, sociology, and Slavic studies, as well as jurists, curators and museum specialists, researchers and employees in cultural institutions.

The prophetic streak in his creativity gives him the same lasting appeal as dystopian novelists such as Zamiatin and Orwell whom he influenced and whose ethical concerns he anticipated. Religious themes are prominent in his work, too, and, though he was a believer, his interest seems to lie in the tension between faith and unbelief, which was felt as keenly in the Russia of his time as in our own. The nature of Dostoevskii’s art also continues to be debated.
