Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year approximately 250,000 Americans undergo total-knee-replacement surgery (also known as a total knee arthroplasty, or TKA). Every year, a million more consider it. If you are considering or have had a total knee replacement you should read this book. It will tell you everything you need to know to prepare for and recover from the surgery, and to get the most out of your new knee. The success of a total knee replacement depends on rehabilitating the knee after the operation -- in fact, the rehab is as important as the surgery itself. This book maps out the road to recovery with week-by-week exercises for a full year. The authors, a surgeon and physical therapist who have both been orthopedic patients, provide practical tips, success stories and personal insights into the recovery process. Most people, even surgeons, don't realize how dramatically arthritis can change a person's life. Author Jeff Falkel, Ph.D., was one of these people. Over the course of 20 years his knees had gotten progressively worse, and eventually the pain reached the point where it was present in every aspect of his life. He could not stand or walk without crippling pain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathological conditions affecting the hip and knee joints occupy a particular place amongst the important orthopaedic entities affecting the extremities. On the one hand they are relatively frequent and on the other they mean for the patient limitation of his ability to walk, because of their considerably detrimental effects. A purposeful basic treatment of these joint diseases (and here osteoarthritis takes pride of place) is only possible if it stems from a reliable biomechanical analysis of the normal and patho logical stressing of the joint in question. Whilst the situation in the hip can be considered to be fundamentally clarified, a com prehensive representation of the knee is still lacking particularly when taking into account the latest knowledge of biomechanics. Recently our concepts of the kinematics of the knee have been completely changed, but the clinically important question of articular stressing remains unanswered. Dr. Maquet has carried out pioneer work in this field for some years in adapting, by analogy, to the knee joint, principles already accepted for the hip joint. Since the knee is not a ball and socket joint, a complicated problem arises for which new thoughts are necessary. The results of the numerous operations carried out by Dr. Maquet according to the biomechanical con siderations, demonstrate that his thinking is fundamentally correct. Above all, it is here again proven (as earlier in the case of the hip) that healing of osteoarthritis depends decisively on reducing and evenly distributing joint pressure.

Book Synopsis The Knee by : W. Müller

Download or read book The Knee written by W. Müller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1983 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new treatise is the most outstanding piece of work on the knee and its associated ligaments currently available. Never before have I seen such an extensive study of the biomechanics of the knee with such a comprehensive review of the literature. The first section of the book, which deals with the functional anatomy (structure and biomechanics), immediately alerts the reader to the necessity of understanding the natural develop ment and action of the related structures, clearly emphasizing that successful diagnosis and treatment cannot otherwise be expected; the many who want an easy standard approach to each classic problem may find this hard to accept. Study what Werner Muller has written and compare it with your own findings from repeated dissection of anatomical specimens. The author goes on to stress that to have a real grasp of reconstructive surgery of the ligaments, one must be properly acquainted with the pathology and the repair of acute lesions. In no other way can one learn to recognize chronic problems. Once this step has been mastered it can be seen that the reconstructive procedures that Muller advocates do, for the most part, follow the laws of Nature rather than create the kind of abnormalities which often disrupt natural anatomical func tion.
