Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays by prominent scholars from many disciplines on the construction of public memories The study of public memory has grown rapidly across numerous disciplines in recent years, among them American studies, history, philosophy, sociology, architecture, and communications. As scholars probe acts of collective remembrance, they have shed light on the cultural processes of memory. Essays contained in this volume address issues such as the scope of public memory, the ways we forget, the relationship between politics and memory, and the material practices of memory. Stephen Browne’s contribution studies the alternative to memory erasure, silence, and forgetting as posited by Hannah Arendt in her classic Eichmann in Jerusalem. Rosa Eberly writes about the Texas tower shootings of 1966, memories of which have been minimized by local officials. Charles Morris examines public reactions to Larry Kramer’s declaration that Abraham Lincoln was homosexual, horrifying the guardians of Lincoln’s public memory. And Barbie Zelizer considers the impact on public memory of visual images, specifically still photographs of individuals about to perish (e.g., people falling from the World Trade Center) and the sense of communal loss they manifest. Whether addressing the transitory and mutable nature of collective memories over time or the ways various groups maintain, engender, or resist those memories, this work constitutes a major contribution to our understanding of how public memory has been and might continue to be framed.

Book excerpt: While earlier theorists held up "experience" as the defining character of installation art, few people have had the opportunity to walk through celebrated installation pieces from the past. Instead, installation art of the past is known through archival photographs that limit, define, and frame the experience of the viewer. Monica E. McTighe argues that the rise of photographic-based theories of perception and experience, coupled with the inherent closeness of installation art to the field of photography, had a profound impact on the very nature of installation art, leading to a flood of photography- and film-based installations. With its close readings of specific works, Framed Spaces will appeal to art historians and theorists across a broad spectrum of the visual arts.

Book excerpt: "Suzanne Farrell Smith's father was killed by a drunk driver when she was six, and a devastating fire nearly destroyed her house when she was eight. She remembers those two--and only those two--events from her first nearly twelve years of life. While her three older sisters hold on to rich and rewarding memories of their father, Smith recalls nothing of him. Her entire childhood was, seemingly, erased. In The Memory Sessions, Smith attempts to excavate lost childhood memories. She puts herself through multiple therapies and exercises, including psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, somatic experiencing, and acupuncture. She digs for clues in her mother's long-stored boxes. She creates--with objects, photographs, and captions--a physical timeline to compensate for the one that's missing in her memory. She travels to San Diego, where her family vacationed with her father right before he died. She researches, interviews, and meditates, all while facing down the two traumatic memories that defined her early life. The result is an experimental memoir that upends our understanding of the genre. Rather than recount a childhood, The Memory Sessions attempts to create one from research, archives, imagination, and the memories of others. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press"--

Book excerpt: My children are grown and have their own Christmas celebrations with their families-each with their own traditions. When my wife and I have the occasion of being a part of one of these, usually in the afternoon someone will say, "Grandpa, will you tell us a Christmas story?" That describes this book. I'm going to tell you a story-maybe one you can share at your gathering. Ah, but I've enlisted the help of other storytellers, each with their own Christmas story. Some of these are actual memories from their childhood; some are original stories they have crafted to tell at Christmas gatherings. Some of the stories are Bible stories that are simply told right from Scripture, others are embellished Bible stories. Make us a part of your Christmas tradition. Gather 'round and let "Grandpa tell you a Christmas story."

Book excerpt: I have been writings stories and poems since before I could write. My imagination is my constant companion; it has helped me through my toughest times when I was suffering with mental illness and a loss of self. My hope is that this book of my writings, poems and short stories will help at least one person to know that they are not alone in the silent, yet deathly grips of mental illness. In our culture today having a mental illness is bad, yet no one wants to talk about it. Mental illness can kill, the same as war or cancer, and we talk and hear about them all the time. For years I was silent, never telling anyone how hurt I felt and how much I had grown to hate myself. I thought I was the only one who felt this way and therefore I was broken or wrong. So I know that there are people out there who are needlessly suffering in silence and so I am going to take a step to break the silence and to hopefully begin to start a conversation, or at least make people hear and see what mental illness can do. Mental illness not only affects the afflicted person but it can trickle down to affect family members, work environments and even whole communities. Mental illness is becoming an epidemic in our society and no one is talking about it. I have spent too many years being silent and afraid. If you are reading this and you are suffering, or you know someone who is, you are not alone. I have been there too, and I have held on so that I could share my story and my love of writing and creative expression. Enjoy.

Book excerpt: In contemporary psychoanalysis, the concepts of time and history have become increasingly complex. It is evident that this trend offers us an opportunity to think about the intercrossing of the different temporal dimensions imbuing the subject, an inevitable aspect of the analytic process. History is time past but what is recovered is now the working through of the subject history, which carries the mark of both passing time and re-signifying time. It is precisely the notion of history that gains different dimensions when a purely deterministic analysis is disassembled. Continuities and breaks are found between subjective time and chronological time; between the inevitable decrepitude of the biological body with the passing of time and the timelessness of the unconscious; between linear, circular times and retroactive re-signification; between facts, screen memories, memory and the work of constructing history; between the times of repetition and the times of difference; between reversible and irreversible time; between the timelessness of the unconscious and the temporalities of the ego.

Book excerpt: Experience 20 Romance Stories of Top Gun POWs Captured by Love shares the real love stories of 20 Vietnam War POWs. Some had wives who started a movement that changed American foreign policy. Others came home and had to start over, while five single men met the loves of their lives. Despite their unique differences, all these couples have been happily married 40 to 65 years. You’ll be swept up into some extraordinary tales such as: • Carole boldly gave her husband’s POW-MIA bracelet to John Wayne—he wore it for years! • Pan Am stewardess Suzy wore a bracelet for POW Bill Bailey, whom she did not know. But she prayed for him daily, and miraculously met and married him when he came home. • After eight years in prison, one POW said to his wife in his first phone call upon his release, “Hi Jane. It’s Tarzan.” You will laugh and cry when you learn why. Former POW Lee Ellis and love expert Greg Godek take you on a dramatic journey of faithfulness, passion, excitement, resilience, and practical love lessons from these couples.
