Book excerpt: The ocean circulation is known to be a central element in determining the present climate state and to be crucial in understanding how it might change in the future. However, our current understanding of the ocean is so primitive that forecasts of future climate states much be regarded as mainly speculative. Central to the problem is the very great difficulty of observing the state of the ocean today, and of determining whether it is changing to any significant extent. The concept for Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate being described by this document focuses on the critical role of the world's oceans in the process of global change. A research and engineering program to create a network of acoustic transmission paths represents the first step to measure long-term temperature change in the ocean (and hence by inference, atmospheric and climatic trends). This network can build on the results of The Heard Island Feasibility Test, of using very long-range underwater sound transmissions to measure oceanic temperature on basin scales. It involves a multiyear program to monitor the ocean on a global basis by installing a system of acoustic sources and receives at sites that provide adequate spatial sampling, and are technically, politically and logistically feasible.

Book excerpt: Coastal Acoustic Tomography begins with the specifics required for designing a Coastal Acoustic Tomography (CAT) experiment and operating the CAT system in coastal seas. Following sections discuss the procedure for data analyses and various application examples of CAT to coastal/shallow seas (obtained in various locations). These sections are broken down into four kinds of methods: horizontal-slice inversion, vertical-slice inversion, modal expansion method and data assimilation. This book emphasizes how dynamic phenomena occurring in coastal/shallow seas can be analyzed using the standard method of inversion and data assimilation. The book is relevant for physical oceanographers, ocean environmentalists and ocean dynamists, focusing on the event being observed rather than the intrinsic details of observational processes. Application examples of successful dynamic phenomena measured by coastal acoustic tomography are also included. Provides the information needed for researchers and graduate students in physical oceanography, ocean-fluid dynamics and ocean environments to apply Ocean Acoustic Tomography (OAT) to their own fields Presents the benefits of using acoustic tomography, including less disturbance to aquatic environments vs. other monitoring methods Includes the assimilation of CAT data into a coastal sea circulation model, a powerful tool to predict coastal-sea environmental changes

Book excerpt: The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) is an international programme for a permanent global framework of observations, modelling and analysis of ocean variables that are needed to support operational services around the world. The EuroGOOS strategy has two streams: the first is to improve the quality of marine information in European home waters, and the second is to collaborate with similar organisations in other continents to create a new global ocean observing and modelling system that will provide the open ocean forecasts needed to achieve the best possible performance by local marine information services everywhere. EuroGOOS held its second international conference in The Hague in 1999. Here, the operational services already in place in the EuroGOOS regions were presented and evaluated. In addition, a "Forward Look" was presented, with targets for the next 5-10 years. The proceedings of the first EuroGOOS conference were published by Elsevier in the /locate/inca/600827EOS Series No. 62 Editors: Stel et al, ISBN 0-444-82892-3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deep sea covers over 60% of the surface of the earth, yet less than 1% has been scientifically investigated. There is growing pressure on deep-sea resources and on researchers to deliver information on biodiversity and the effects of human impacts on deep-sea ecosystems. Although scientific knowledge has increased rapidly in recent decades, there exist large gaps in global sampling coverage of the deep sea, and major efforts continue to be directed into offshore research. Biological Sampling in the Deep Sea represents the first comprehensive compilation of deep-sea sampling methodologies for a range of habitats. It reviews the real life applications of current, and in some instances developing, deep-sea sampling tools and techniques. In creating this book the authors have been able to draw upon the experiences of those at the coal face of deep-sea sampling, expanding on the existing methodological texts whilst encompassing a level of technical detail often omitted from journal publications. Ultimately the book will promote international consistency in sampling approaches and data collection, advance the integration of information into global databases, and facilitate improved data analyses and consequently uptake of science results for the management and conservation of the deep-sea environment. The book will appeal to a range of readers, including students, early-career through to seasoned researchers, as well as environmental managers and policy makers wishing to understand how the deep-sea is sampled, the challenges associated with deep survey work, and the type of information that can be obtained.

Book excerpt: Planning of a year-round experiment on trans-Arctic acoustic transmission in the framework of the program Arctic Climate Observation using Underwater Sound" (ACOUS) is a complex problem involving, not only, scientific and technical issues, but requiring consideration, also, of the financial aspects. According to the ACOUS proposal, the NRAD's vertical array is one which can be used as the first receiving system for the year-round experiment, and this array should be deployed in the Lincoln Sea in the spring of 1996. Therefore, the main problem at the first stage of designing the experiment is to develop an optimum scheme for trans-Arctic acoustic transmissions to the Lincoln Sea.
