Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fractures of the Orbit and Injuries to the Eye in War The infinite variety of injuries which any war presents to the surgeon gives to military surgery a special interest and importance. The special interest and importance, in a surgical sense, of the great European War lies not so much in the fact that examples of every form of gross lesion of organs and limbs have been seen, for if we read the older writers we find little in the modems that is new in this respect, but is to be found in the enormous mass of clinical material which has been presented to us and in the production of evidence sufficient to eliminate sources of error in determining important conclusions. For the first time also in any campaign the labours of the surgeon and the physician have had the aid of the bacteriologist, the pathologist, the physiologist and indeed of every form of scientific assistance in the solution of their respective problems. The clinician entered upon the great war armed with all the resources which the advances of fifty years had made available. If the surgical problems of modem war can be said not to differ sensibly from the campaigns of the past, the form in which they have been presented is certainly as different as are the methods of their solution. The achievements in the field of discovery of the chemist, the physicist and the biologist have given the military surgeon an advantage in diagnosis and treatment which was denied to his predecessors, and we are able to measure the effects of these advantages when we come to appraise the results which have been attained. Book excerpt: Brain Injury: Applications from War and Terrorism is a single-authored book written by a world-class neuroradiologist with extensive experience in traumatic brain injury (TBI). It features six graphic-intense chapters depicting and expounding upon the complexity of TBI. Culled from nearly three decades of studying civilian TBI and five years of intensive study of TBI sustained from combat, terrorism, and natural disasters, this work is an exhaustive and innovative authority on the current approaches and applications of civilian and combat TBI. The text is sectored into six chapters based on pathophysiology, each augmented with numerous images and illustrations. The book gives special attention to neuroimaging, but is reinforced with relevant clinical correlation. This monograph is unique because it is first in class as an omnibus for the radiologist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, maxillofacial surgeon, emergency physician, pediatrician, ophthalmologist, and the rehabilitation team. Accompanied by detailed high resolution illustrations with meticulous annotation, Brain Injury: Applications from War and Terrorism contains over 500 curated radiological and clinical images that enhance the concepts detailed in each chapter. Complete with up-to-date references, it is a state of the art resource guide for any member of the team of professionals caring for those who have sustained a traumatic brain injury In the foreword, Bob Woodruff writes - “After the September 11 attacks, [Dr. Gean] realized the significant void in our understanding of brain Injury caused by war and terrorism (and) she was motivated to devote the last four years of her academic pursuits to understanding the similarities and differences between civilian TBI and TBI suffered in war, terrorism, and natural disasters... This extraordinary, magnificently illustrated and unique single-authored textbook, Brain Injury: Applications from War and Terrorism,is the culmination of Dr. Gean’s dedication and experience. It’s really not just a book – it is a telegraphed documentary of a lifelong conviction to recognizing and responding to TBI by an acknowledged global expert.”

Such experimental and modeling efforts are helpful, on the one hand, in understanding the aetiology, pathophysiology and dynamics of injury development and on the other hand in guiding the development of better equipment and protective gear or devices that should ultimately reduce the prevalence and incidence of injuries or lessen their hazardous effects. The book is useful for military-oriented biomedical engineers and medical physicists, as well as for military physiologists and other medical specialists who are interested in the science and technology implemented in modern investigations of military related injuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trauma to the eye and associated structures account for a significant number of combat-related injuries, and combat ocular trauma has steadily risen in frequency over the last century. Ophthalmology in Military and Civilian Casualty Care comprehensively examines the accommodations and modifications that must be made in order to treat such ocular traumas in a military setting. Created by ophthalmology experts actively serving in the military at various levels, this book is designed to improve ophthalmic casualty outcomes across military settings. A history of military ophthalmology serves as the opening chapter, setting the stage for subsequent chapters examining the intricacies and advancements of damage control ophthalmology, prehospital care of combat eye injuries, neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of trauma, and further severe ocular conditions. Later chapters explore the preventative and proactive efforts to reduce and treat combat-related ocular trauma by developing “eye armor” for the American infantry and military-affiliated ophthalmic surgical missions. Complete with high-quality color illustrations and figures, this unique book will serve as an invaluable, practical reference for military physicians, military ophthalmologists, ophthalmology professors, residents, and fellows interested in combat medicine and eye trauma.
