Book excerpt: Several different types of modifiers are increasingly being used to improve the performance of asphalt binders or to achieve desired mixture production characteristics (e.g., Warm Mix Asphalt). However, current Superpave performance specifications do not accurately reflect the performance characteristics of these modified binders. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the inherent fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt binders in the form of a matrix with rigid particle inclusions. The underlying rationale for this approach was to subject the binders to a state of stress that is similar to the one in a full asphalt mixture. This was achieved by fabricating and testing composite specimens of the asphalt binders and glass beads with a specified gradation. Four asphalt binders with similar true temperature grades but different modifiers were used in this study. The viscoelastic and fatigue cracking characteristics of the binders were measured using the glass bead-binder composite specimens in a dynamic shear rheometer at an intermediate temperature. The results demonstrate that the four asphalt binders modified using different methods had different damage characteristics despite the fact that these four binders were rated to have a similar performance grade based on the Superpave specifications. Fatigue cracking characteristics of the glass bead-binder test specimens used in this study were qualitatively very similar to the fatigue cracking characteristics of full asphalt mixtures using the same binders. The rank order of fatigue cracking resistance for the four glass bead-binder mixtures compared reasonably well to the rank order of fatigue cracking resistance for the full asphalt mixtures that incorporated these asphalt binders.

Cracking typically occurs within the asphalt binder phase of asphalt mixtures. Thus, asphalt binder fatigue resistance is critical in determining overall pavement fatigue performance. One procedure commonly used to characterize asphalt binder fatigue resistance is the time sweep test, which consists of repeated torsional loading of a cylindrical specimen in the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). Generally, apparent changes in material properties with respect to number of cycles of loading are used to define fatigue failure of the asphalt binder. Results of this test have been shown to correlate well with asphalt mixture fatigue performance. However, the mechanisms responsible for changes in material properties during fatigue testing in the DSR were previously not well understood. Results in this study demonstrate that fracture can account for changes in loading resistance of asphalt binders during time sweep testing. Under cyclic torsional loading of cylindrical specimens, macro fracture is shown to manifest in the form of edge fracture. Edge fracture is a circumferential crack starting at the periphery of a cylindrical sample that propagates inward as loading is applied, reducing the effective sample size. Digital visualization of the fractured specimens allowed for determination of the fractured and intact sample area. Predictions of fracture propagation based on measurements of loading resistance and fracture mechanics concepts agreed favorably with actual measurements based on visualization. Furthermore, the fracture morphology and progression of crack growth of asphalt binders matched those observed for other materials under similar loading conditions.Based on these results, fatigue damage characterization of asphalt binders can be improved by incorporating fracture mechanics into an analysis framework for DSR fatigue test results. An analysis framework based on fracture principles is presented. The proposed model allows predicting fatigue life at any loading amplitude using the results of a single fatigue test. Additionally, it is demonstrated that time-temperature superposition is applicable to fatigue crack propagation of asphalt binders, allowing for efficient prediction of fatigue performance at multiple temperatures. The model is validated using a comparison between asphalt mixture and binder fatigue test results.

The properties of the sand-asphalt mortars or fine aggregate matrix (FAM) can be used to characterize the evolution of fatigue crack growth and self-healing in asphalt mixtures. This study compares the internal microstructure of the mortar within a full asphalt mixture to the internal microstructure of the FAM specimen. This study also conducts a limited evaluation of the influence of mixture properties and methods of compaction on the engineering properties of the FAM specimens. The results from this study, although limited in number, indicate that in most cases the SGC compacted FAM specimen had a microstructure that most closely resembled the microstructure of the mortar within a full asphalt mixture. Another finding from this study was that, at a given level of damage, the healing characteristic of the three different types of FAM mixes was not significantly different. This indicates that the healing rate is mostly dictated by the type of binder and not significantly influenced by the gradation or binder content, as long as the volumetric distribution of the mastic was the same. In other words, the inherent healing characteristics of the asphalt binder plays a more significant role relative to other properties (e.g. volumetrics) in the overall fatigue cracking resistance of the asphalt mixture.

Book excerpt: The current test methods for measuring fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures involves many steps which are time-consuming and costly. On the other hand, asphalt binder and mastic testing are less time consuming and more accessible to practitioners than mixtures testing. Therefore, if the routinely measured properties of asphalt binders, fillers, and volumetric parameters of asphalt mixtures can be used to predict cracking resistance of mixtures, the effort to perform mixtures testing of asphalt mixtures can be minimized. The objective of this study is to develop prediction models for cracking and damage behavior of asphalt mixtures using the stepwise regression method at intermediate temperatures from limited laboratory testing of binders and mixture volumetric properties routinely done in practice. In the first phase of this study, the effects of physical and chemical properties of fillers on fatigue of asphalt mastic are measured using LAS test are measured. Then prediction models of Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) parameters of the mastics are developed using the physical (Rigden Voids-RV and Fineness Modulus-FM), chemical properties (Calcium Oxide and Methylene Blue) of the fillers, and the LAS parameters of the binders. The results show that the fatigue cracking resistance of mastic is dependent on the interaction between base asphalt binder and filler type. The results also show that the effect of fillers on the fatigue life of mastic is dependent on the failure criterion used in the analysis of LAS test. It is also found that the fatigue cracking resistance (LAS Parameters) of mastic can be predicted reliably from Rigden Voids and LAS parameters of binders. In the second phase of the study, prediction models of cracking resistance of mixtures as measured by the Semi-Circular Bending- Illinois Flexibility Index Test (SCB-IFIT) are developed using an experimental database including 44 mixtures that are short-term-aged and 30 for long-term-aged mixtures. These mixtures are produced with varying combinations of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP), binder, aggregate sources, and fillers. More specifically, models for the SCB parameters (Flexibility Index (FI), post-peak slope, and Fracture Energy (Gf) models are constructed using various independent variables such as asphalt content, asphalt film thickness, aggregate gradation, RAP content, LAS parameter of binder and mastic properties. A sensitivity analysis is performed to access the impact of these independent variables on SCB parameters. Based on the correlation and validation results, the developed models of SCB parameters are found to predict the FI, post-peak slope and Gf of asphalt mixtures with high accuracy. The developed models are recommended to use for estimating the fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures when testing is not feasible or as an initial step for selection of mixture designs and binder grades before mixture testing.

Book excerpt: Viscoelastic asphalt binder plays an important role in bonding individual aggregate particles and contributes to the durability and stability of asphalt pavement. When asphalt binder is subjected to cyclic loading, deformation and fracture may develop simultaneously within it, leading to the deterioration of material properties and eventually fatigue failure. Research has found that some degree of recovery may develop if rest periods are applied after fatigue deterioration. However, it is not clear whether such recovery is caused by fracture healing, viscoelastic recovery, or both. This paper presents an analysis to differentiate the contributions of fracture healing and viscoelastic recovery to the asphalt binder during rest periods. It also evaluates the damage caused by deformation and fracture during a fatigue process. It is found that viscoelastic recovery plays an important role in the instant increase in the dynamic shear modulus at the beginning of the rest period. The effect of fracture healing on dynamic shear modulus recovery is more dominant in the long term. A healing index is developed based only on the fracture healing of asphalt binder, excluding the effect of viscoelastic recovery. It can be used to evaluate the true healing properties of different asphalt binders.

Book excerpt: Asphalt binder is the adhesive that holds together aggregate particles of different sizes of an asphalt mixture. The tensile properties of an asphalt binder can greatly affect the performance of the asphalt mixture under repeated traffic loading. While the current performance grade specification has been in use for a long time to characterize the asphalt binders with regards to fatigue, it has been shown to be largely ineffective. This study was performed with the goal of investigating a strength-based measure to evaluate the fatigue cracking resistance of the asphalt binder. The poker chip geometry was used for this purpose. The test involved tensile loading of a thin film of asphalt binder between two rigid substrates. The first part of this study focused on determining failure criteria for the test. The second part was a study of the binders that have a similar grade based on the current performance grade specification but are expected to perform differently due to difference in their chemical makeup. Finally, the third part involved a study of the effects of nanomaterials as additives on the strength of the binder based on poker chip test results. The results demonstrated that failure strain criteria is promising as a material property, but still needs further study for validation. It was also observed that binders with similar performance grade had significantly different tensile strength. Finally, it was observed that nanomaterials had a significant impact on the test results of unaged binder, but had less effect on aged asphalt binders.

Book excerpt: The objective of this article is to investigate the effects of temperature on rutting and fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt binders based on the time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP) In this study, the TTSP approach was employed to interpret the results of multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests for both neat and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)modified asphalt binders. The higher stress level of 3.2kPa in the standard MSCR test procedure was extended to 10 and 15kPa to verify the stress sensitivity of the nonrecoverable compliance (Jnr) A loading duration of 5 minutes in the standard LAS test was extended to 10 and 15 minutes to develop the fatigue failure criterion at different conditions. The results demonstrate that the time-strain curves of the neat binder during the MSCR tests under different temperatures can be unified into a single strain master curve using the TTSP shift factors, based on which the predictiveJnrshowed good agreement with the measured values. This TTSP-based analysis approach does not work well for the MSCR results of the SBS-modified binder at high temperatures. However, the fatigue failure criterion determined from the LAS tests under different temperatures was verified to be successfully constructed into a single failure criterion according to the TTSP approach for both the neat and SBS-modified binders. Therefore, only an additional caution is raised for the TTS-based analysis on rutting resistance of the modified binder in a high temperature range.

These test methods are: Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) for creep and strength of asphalt mixtures; low temperature Semi Circular Bend (SCB) test for fracture energy of asphalt mixtures; Dynamic Modulus (E*) test of asphalt mixtures using the Indirect Tensile Test (IDT) configuration; and BBR strength test of asphalt binders. The materials used in the experimental work were used in MnROAD cells constructed in the summer of 2016 as part of the MnROAD Cracking Group (CG) experiment, a 3-year pooled-fund project. The results show that the testing methods investigated provide repeatable results that follow trends similar to the one observed using traditional methods. The results also show that the properties are highly temperature dependent and the ranking observed at one temperature can change at a different temperature. In addition, it is observed that materials with similar rheological properties, such as complex modulus absolute value E*, creep stiffness S, and m-value, do not necessarily have the same fracture resistance. These results confirm one more time the need for a fracture/strength test for correctly evaluating cracking resistance of asphalt materials.

Book excerpt: The focus of many asphalt mixture design procedures over the past 10 years has led to the development of stiffer, drier mixtures. However, these mixes are more difficult to construct and are potentially more prone to reflective cracking. In this research the upgraded overlay tester is introduced and proposed as a simple performance test on reflective cracking. The overlay tester can be run on standard size samples, typically 6 in (150 mm) long by 3 in (75 mm) wide by 1.5 in (38 mm) high. These specimens can be prepared from either field cores or from Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) molded specimens. The test is rapid and repeatable, and poor samples fail in minutes. It characterizes both crack initiation and crack propagation properties of asphalt mixtures. Based on repeatability study results, three replicates are recommended for the overlay tester. Sensitivity studies indicate that the overlay tester provides reasonable test results. Increasing asphalt content will significantly improve the reflective cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. In a series of tests on Texas mixtures, it was determined that aggregate absorption has a major impact on the performance of specimens in the overlay tester. This topic has not received much attention recently but it obviously needs to be investigated. In the lab these highly absorptive aggregates did not severely impact the rutting performance but they had a major impact on cracking life. The effectiveness of the overlay tester was validated by five case studies in Texas. The overlay tester results all correlated well with the field performance. Furthermore, the overlay tester results have good correlations with beam fatigue test results and low temperature performance of asphalt mixtures in the field. A preliminary framework of asphalt overlay mixture designs and associated criteria have been proposed. Based on the framework, two examples of asphalt overlay mixture designs are presented in this report. This framework and the associated criteria are preliminary and they will need further refinement. Finally, a brand new overlay tester has been manufactured and delivered to TxDOTs central lab at the edar Park office. In addition, training for the operation and analysis has been provided.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Fatigue cracking is a primary distress in asphalt due to repetitive stresses and strains caused by traffic. The main objective of this study is to investigate the use of the semi-circular bend (SCB) test as a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) measure for field construction. The SCB test parameters were determined using two methods, the first of which was cross-head movement (CHM), and the second was non-contact camera. In SCB CHM method the specimens were loaded monotonically until fracture under a constant cross-head deformation, while in none-contact camera method a camera was fixed in front of the SCB specimen to measure the crack length. In addition beam-fatigue test (BFT) was conducted according to AASHTO T-321 on the same mixtures. A comprehensive comparison between the test results is performed. The results of this study indicate that the SCB test has a great potential as a QA/QC test of fracture properties of asphalt mixtures.
