Book excerpt: Fatigue failures occur in aerospace, marine, nuclear structures and automobile com ponents from initiation and propagation of cracks from holes, scratches or defects in the material. To design against these failures, crack propagation life and fracture strength need to be accurately predicted. It is reported in the literature, that these failures often initiate as surface cracks, corner cracks and cracks emanating from fastner holes. Such cracks are with elliptic or nearly elliptic in shapes. The deviation from elliptic shape is due to varying constraint effect along the crack front. Even in situations, when the cracks are through the thickness of the material, there would be thicknesswise variation of constraint effects leading to three dimensional nature of crack growth. Accurate predictions of the crack growth in these cases by numerical methods can be made only by solving three-dimensional boundary value problems. Empirical relationships have been developed [1] based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics over years describing fatigue crack growth response. Some of these empirical relationships required modifications in the later stages, to meet the design applications. The Crack closure phenomenon discovered by Elber[2, 3] during the crack growth phase is mainly attributed to the local material yielding near the crack tip and the consequent residual plastic wake behind the crack tip. It helped considerably in understanding several aspects of fatigue crack growth and rewrite these relations.

Book Synopsis Damage Mechanics with Finite Elements by : P.I. Kattan
Download or read book Damage Mechanics with Finite Elements written by P.I. Kattan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major goal of this book is to present the implementation of some damage models with finite elements. The damage models are based on the principles of continuum damage mechanics and the effective stress concept. Several books have appeared recently on damage mechanics but are mostly theoretical in nature. Alternatively, this book provides a complete finite element program that includes the effects of damage. The book consists of two parts. Part I includes two chapters mainly review ing topics from finite element analysis and continuum damage mechanics. The reader is cautioned that the material contained in this part is introductor- other references must be consulted for the theoretical aspects of these topics. For a complete theoretical treatment of the subject, the reader is referred to the book Advances in Damage Mechanics: Metals and Metal Matrix Composites by Voyiadjis and Kattan, published in 1999. In Part II the finite element program DNA is introduced in three chapters. DNA stands for "Da mage Nonlinear Analysis". The program can be used for the analysis of elasto plastic material behavior including the effects of damage within the frame work of damage mechanics. Two versions of DNA are presented - one for small strain analysis and one for finite strain analysis. The program makes extensive calls to a library of tensor operations developed by the authors. The tensor library is extensively outlined in the last chapter of the book.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites by : R.L. Carlson
Download or read book Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites written by R.L. Carlson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-11-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites provides a balanced treatment of the phenomenon of fatigue in metals, nonmetals and composites with polymeric, metallic and ceramic matrices. The applicability of the safe life philosophy of design is examined for each of the materials. Attention is also focused on the stable crack growth phase of fatigue and differences in the operative mechanisms for the various classes of materials are considered. The impacts of these differences on the development of damage tolerance strategies are examined. Among topics discussed are; variable amplitude loading with tensile and compressive overload; closure obstruction; bridging mechanisms; mixed mode states; small cracks; delamination mechanisms and environmental conditions. The arrangement and presentation of the topics are such that An Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites can serve as a course text for mechanical, civil, aeronautical and astronautical engineering and material science courses as well as a reference for engineers who are concerned with fatigue testing and aircraft, automobile and engine design.

This book was released on 2007-03-23 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores damage growth and fracture processes in cementitious, ceramic, polymer and metal matrix composites, integrating properties like stiffness and strength with observation at below macroscopic scale. Advances in multiscale modelling and analysis pertain directly to materials which either have a range of relevant microstructural scales, like metals, or do not have a well-defined microstructure, like cementitious or ceramic composites.

This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanics of materials approach (definition of E, G, Nu, and Alpha) and the finite element method are used to explore the effects of partial bonding and fiber fracture on the behavior of high temperature metal matrix composites. Composite ply properties are calculated for various degrees of disbonding to evaluate the sensitivity of these properties to the presence of fiber/matrix disbonding and fiber fracture. The mechanics of materials approach allows for the determination of the basic ply material properties needed for design/analysis of composites. The finite element method provides the necessary structural response (forces and displacements) for the mechanics of materials equations. Results show that disbonding of fractured fibers affect only E sub (111) and alpha sub (111) significantly. Caruso, J. J. and Trowbridge, D. and Chamis, C. C. Glenn Research Center RTOP 505-63-11...
Book Synopsis Fracture Scaling by : Zdenek P. Bazant
Download or read book Fracture Scaling written by Zdenek P. Bazant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of the papers given at the workshop on Fracture Scaling, held at the University of Maryland, USA, 10-12 June 1999, under the sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, Arlington, VA, USA. These papers can be grouped under five major themes: Micromechanical analysis Size effects in fiber composites Scaling and heterogeneity Computational aspects and nonlocal or gradient models Size effects in concrete, ice and soils . This workshop is the result of a significant research effort, supported by the Office of Naval Research, into the problems of scaling of fracture in fiber composites, and generally into the problems of scaling in solid mechanics. These problems, which are of interest for many materials, especially all quasibrittle materials, share similar characteristics. Thus, progress in the understanding of scaling problems for one material may help progress for another material. This makes it clear that a dialogue between researchers in various fields of mechanics is highly desirable and should be promoted. In view of this, this volume should be of interest to researchers and advanced graduate students in materials science, solid mechanics and civil engineering.
