Book excerpt: When the structural integrity of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) in a pressurised water re- actor (PWR) is analysed, certain types of postulated accidents have to be considered. The conditions during a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) resemble a warm prestressing (WPS) sce- nario. Warm prestressing refers to a prior overload sequence which in certain circumstances improves the fracture resistance of a ferritic steel structure. Furthermore, a RPV is a welded structure. The welding process gives rise to residual stresses (RS) that can have a significant influence on the integrity of the RPV. Tensile residual stresses are often regarded as unwanted and detrimental. Previous work has not studied the combined effects of WPS and RS on the fracture behaviour of ferritic steel components. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the combined effects of WPS and RS by means of robust statistical techniques. To describe the effects of WPS, two models are investigated. A local model using the near crack tip stresses and strains (often called the Beremin model) is usually used to predict the fracture probability of as-received material and can be adapted to include the effects of WPS. However, this requires the use of a detailed finite element analysis. The Chell model, on the other hand, is a deterministic model developed to explain the beneficial effects ofWPS on fracture toughness. Using a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation approach, the Chell model is extended to enable failure probability distributions to be determined. The failure probabilities are compared with both experimental data from the literature and results of an experimental test programme on compact tension specimens. It is found that the MCS approach used in conjunction with the Chell model provides robust and accurate predictions of the failure probability following WPS. To extend the analysis to include residual stress, a novel preloading rig model for introducing a known tensile RS into laboratory fracture specimens is investigated. It is found that the Chell model is to be preferred over the Beremin model. The Chell model provides robust and accurate predictions of the fracture behaviour after WPS, yet its application is straight forward and less time expensive than the Beremin model. The combined effects of WPS and a tensile RS field on the failure probabilities can be analysed by combining the Chell model with the preloading rig model and applying a Monte Carlo simulation approach. Contrary to expectations, it is shown that a tensile RS field can have a significant beneficial effect on the failure distribution after WPS.

Book excerpt: The Welding Engineer's Guide to Fracture and Fatigue provides an essential introduction to fracture and fatigue and the assessment of these failure modes, through to the level of knowledge that would be expected of a qualified welding engineer. Part one covers the basic principles of weld fracture and fatigue. It begins with a review of the design of engineered structures, provides descriptions of typical welding defects and how these defects behave in structures undergoing static and cyclical loading, and explains the range of failure modes. Part two then explains how to detect and assess defects using fitness for service assessment procedures. Throughout, the book assumes no prior knowledge and explains concepts from first principles. Book excerpt: The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace

Book excerpt: This book covers a variety of topics in mechanics, with a special emphasis on material mechanics. It reports on fracture mechanics, fatigue of materials, stress-strain behaviours, as well as transferability problems and constraint effects in fracture mechanics. It covers different kind of materials, from metallic materials such as ferritic and austenitic steels, to composites, concrete, polymers and nanomaterials. Additional topics include heat transfer, quality control and reliability of structures and components. Furthermore, the book gives particular attention to new welding technologies such as STIR welding and spray metal coating, and to novel methods for quality control, such as Taguchi design, fault diagnosis and wavelet analysis. Based on the 2015 edition of the Algerian Congress of Mechanics (Congrès Algérien de Mécanique, CAM), the book also covers energetics, in terms of simulation of turbulent reactive flow, behaviour of supersonic jet, turbulent combustion, fire induced smoke layer, and heat and mass transfer, as well as important concepts related to human reliability and safety of components and structures. All in all, the book represents a complete, practice-oriented reference guide for both academic and professionals in the field of mechanics.
