Book Synopsis High-Pressure Shock Compression of Solids VI by : Yasuyuki Horie

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both experimental and theoretical investigations make it clear that mesoscale materials, that is, materials at scales intermediate between atomic and bulk matter, do not always behave in ways predicted by conventional theories of shock compression. At these scales, shock waves interact with local material properties and microstructure to produce a hierarchy of dissipative structures such as inelastic deformation fields, randomly distributed lattice defects, and residual stresses. A macroscopically steady planar shock wave is neither plane nor steady at the mesoscale. The chapters in this book examine the assumptions underlying our understanding of shock phenomena and present new measurements, calculations, and theories that challenge these assumptions. They address such questions as: - What are the experimental data on mesoscale effects of shocks, and what are the implications? - Can one formulate new mesoscale theories of shock dynamics? - How would new mesoscale theories affect our understanding of shock-induced phase transitions or fracture? - What new computational models will be needed for investigating mesoscale shocks?
Book Synopsis Fracture of Brittle Solids by : Brian Lawn
Download or read book Fracture of Brittle Solids written by Brian Lawn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an advanced text for higher degree materials science students and researchers concerned with the strength of highly brittle covalent-ionic solids, principally ceramics. It is a reconstructed and greatly expanded edition of a book first published in 1975. The book presents a unified continuum, microstructural and atomistic treatment of modern day fracture mechanics from a materials perspective. Particular attention is directed to the basic elements of bonding and microstructure that govern the intrinsic toughness of ceramics. These elements hold the key to the future of ceramics as high-technology materials--to make brittle solids strong, we must first understand what makes them weak. The underlying theme of the book is the fundamental Griffith energy-balance concept of crack propagation. The early chapters develop fracture mechanics from the traditional continuum perspective, with attention to linear and nonlinear crack-tip fields, equilibrium and non-equilibrium crack states. It then describes the atomic structure of sharp cracks, the topical subject of crack-microstructure interactions in ceramics, with special focus on the concepts of crack-tip shielding and crack-resistance curves, and finally deals with indentation fracture, flaws and structural reliability.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume concerns the fracture and fragmentation of solid materials that occurs when they are subjected to extremes of stress applied at the highest possible rates. The plan for the volume is to address experimental, theoretical, and com putational aspects of high-rate dynamic fracture and fragmentation, with emphasis on recent work. We begin with several chapters in which the emphasis falls on experimental methods and observations. These chapters address both macroscopic responses and the microscopic cause of these re sponses. This is followed by several chapters emphasizing modeling-the physical explanation and mathematical representation of the observations. Some of the models are deterministic, while others focus on the stochastic aspects of the observations. Often, the ov\!rall objective of investigation of dynamic fracture and fragmentation phenomena is provision of a means for predicting the entire course of an event that begins with a stimulus such as an impact and proceeds through a complicated deformation and fracture pro cess that results in disintegration of the body and formation of a rapidly expanding cloud of debris fragments. Analysis of this event usually involves development of a continuum theory and computer code that captures the experimental observations by incorporating models of the important pheno mena into a comprehensive description of the deformation and fracture pro cess. It is to this task that the work of the last few chapters is devoted.

In commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the Japan Society of Materials Science, organised by the Foundation for Advancement of International Science and supported by the Science Council of Japan, the information provided in these proceedings reflects the international nature of the meeting. It provides a valuable account of recent developments and problems in the field of mechanical behaviour of materials.
Book Synopsis Polymer Fracture by : H. - H. Kausch
Download or read book Polymer Fracture written by H. - H. Kausch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on "Polymer Fracture" might as well have been called "Kinetic Theory of Polymer Fracture". The term "kinetic theory", however, needs some de finition or, at least, some explanation. A kinetic theory deals with and particu larly considers the effect of the existence and discrete size, of the motion and of the physical properties of molecules on the macroscopic behavior of an ensemble, gaseous or other. A kinetic theory of strength does have to consider additional aspects such as elastic and anelastic deformations, chemical and physical reactions, and the sequence and distribution of different disintegration steps. In the last fifteen years considerable progress has been made in the latter do mains. The deformation and rupture of molecular chains, crystals, and morphologi cal structures have been intensively investigated. The understanding of the effect of those processes on the strength of polymeric materials has especially been furthered by the development and application of spectroscopical methods (ESR, IR) and of the tools offracture mechanics. It is the aim of this book to relate the conventional and successful statistical, parametrical, and continuum mechanical treatment of fracture phenomena to new results on the behavior of highly stressed molecular chains.
Book Synopsis Micromechanics and Nanosimulation of Metals and Composites by : Siegfried Schmauder
Download or read book Micromechanics and Nanosimulation of Metals and Composites written by Siegfried Schmauder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strength of metallic materials determines the usability and reliability of all the machines, tools and equipment around us. Yet, the question about which mechanisms control the strength and damage resistance of materials and how they can be optimised remains largely unanswered. How do real, heterogeneous ma- rials deform and fail? Why can a small modification of the microstructure increase the strength and damage resistance of materials manifold? How can the strength of heterogeneous materials be predicted? The purpose of this book is to present different experimental and computational analysis methods of micromechanics of damage and strength of materials and to demonstrate their applications to various micromechanical problems. This book summarizes at a glance some of the publications of the Computational Mechanics Group at the IMWF/MPA Stuttgart, dealing with atomistic, micro- and meso- chanical modelling and experimental analysis of strength and damage of metallic materials. In chapter 1, the micromechanisms of damage and fracture in different groups of materials are investigated experimentally, using direct observations and inverse analysis. The interaction of microstructural elements with the evolving damage is studied in these experiments. Chapter 2 presents different approaches to the - cromechanical simulation of composite materials: embedded unit cells, multiphase finite elements and multiparticle unit cells. Examples of the application of these models to the analysis of deformation and damage in different materials are given. Chapter 3 deals with the methods of numerical modelling of damage evolution and crack growth in heterogeneous materials.

Book Synopsis Composite Materials IV by : Chi Y. A. Tsao
Download or read book Composite Materials IV written by Chi Y. A. Tsao and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite materials have been at the center of research and development, in the materials community, for decades. The concept of combining metals, ceramics and polymers of various types, shapes and properties into a single composite material having properties that none of the constituents can themselves exhibit, has provided endless scope for human beings to invent. It has therefore stimulated numerous research and development efforts, and many applications. However, in spite of the advantages of composite materials, many underlying problems arising from the complexity of the systems have greatly hindered them from being the major players that they should be in our daily lives. Needless to say, the challenges presented to the composite materials community have been the driving force for organizing composite materials conferences, including the Cross-Strait ones.

Download or read book Thermoinelasticity written by Bruno A. Boley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposal for a Symposium on high temperature effects in solids originated in 1964, at which time a pilot committee, headed by Professor F. K. G. ODQVIST, was formed. Upon the recommendation of this com mittee, a site for the Symposium and a Scientific Organizing Committee were chosen, and some guidelines delineating the field to be covered were established. The Symposium was held at the National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride (Glasgow), Scotland, from June 25 to 28, 1968. The Scientific Organizing Committee was composed of the following mem bers: Professor B. A. BOLEY, Chairman (U. S. A.) Professor F. BUCKENS (Belgium) Professor F. K. G. ODQVIST (Sweden) Professor W. OLSZAK (Poland) Professor H. PARKUS (Austria) Dr. D. G. SOPWITH (U. K.) The Local Organizing Committee was subsequently formed; it was direct ed by Dr. SOPWTTH with Mr. R. BRODIE as Secretary, and Mr. C. E. PHILLIPS and Dr. J. GLEN as additional members. It deserves ample praise for excellent arrangements and hospitality. In the discussions concerned with the goals of the Symposium, it was decided that its principal aim should be the presentation of a comprehen sive view of the behavior of solids and structures at high temperature under any type of inelastic regime. It soon became apparent that this was a very wide field, since it would embrace questions ranging from those of basic thermodynamic to those of engineering analysis and design.
