Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractional Integrals, Potentials, and Radon Transforms, Second Edition presents recent developments in the fractional calculus of functions of one and several real variables, and shows the relation of this field to a variety of areas in pure and applied mathematics. In this thoroughly revised new edition, the book aims to explore how fractional integrals occur in the study of diverse Radon type transforms in integral geometry. Beyond some basic properties of fractional integrals in one and many dimensions, this book also contains a mathematical theory of certain important weakly singular integral equations of the first kind arising in mechanics, diffraction theory and other areas of mathematical physics. The author focuses on explicit inversion formulae that can be obtained by making use of the classical Marchaud’s approach and its generalization, leading to wavelet type representations. New to this Edition Two new chapters and a new appendix, related to Radon transforms and harmonic analysis of linear operators commuting with rotations and dilations have been added. Contains new exercises and bibliographical notes along with a thoroughly expanded list of references. This book is suitable for mathematical physicists and pure mathematicians researching in the area of integral equations, integral transforms, and related harmonic analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on two special sessions held at the AMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans in January 2007, and a satellite workshop held in Baton Rouge on January 4-5, 2007. It consists of invited expositions that together represent a broad spectrum of fields, stressing surprising interactions and connections between areas that are normally thought of as disparate. The main topics are geometry and integral transforms. On the one side are harmonic analysis, symmetric spaces, representation theory (the groups include continuous and discrete, finite and infinite, compact and non-compact), operator theory, PDE, and mathematical probability. Moving in the applied direction we encounter wavelets, fractals, and engineering topics such as frames and signal and image processing. The subjects covered in this book form a unified whole, and they stand at the crossroads of pure and applied mathematics. The articles cover a broad range in harmonic analysis, with the main themes related to integral geometry, the Radon transform, wavelets and frame theory. These themes can loosely be grouped together as follows:Frame Theory and ApplicationsHarmonic Analysis and Function SpacesHarmonic Analysis and Number TheoryIntegral Geometry and Radon TransformsMultiresolution Analysis, Wavelets, and Applications

Book excerpt: The 7th International Workshop in Analysis and its Applications (IWAA) was held at the University of Maine, June 1-6, 1997 and featured approxi mately 60 mathematicians. The principal theme of the workshop shares the title of this volume and the latter is a direct outgrowth of the workshop. IWAA was founded in 1984 by Professor Caslav V. Stanojevic. The first meeting was held in the resort complex Kupuri, Yugoslavia, June 1-10, 1986, with two pilot meetings preceding. The Organization Committee to gether with the Advisory Committee (R. P. Boas, R. R. Goldberg, J. P. Kahne) set forward the format and content of future meetings. A certain number of papers were presented that later appeared individually in such journals as the Proceedings of the AMS, Bulletin of the AMS, Mathematis chen Annalen, and the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and its Applica tions. The second meeting took place June 1-10, 1987, at the same location. At the plenary session of this meeting it was decided that future meetings should have a principal theme. The theme for the third meeting (June 1- 10, 1989, Kupuri) was Karamata's Regular Variation. The principal theme for the fourth meeting (June 1-10, 1990, Kupuri) was Inner Product and Convexity Structures in Analysis, Mathematical Physics, and Economics. The fifth meeting was to have had the theme, Analysis and Foundations, organized in cooperation with Professor A. Blass (June 1-10, 1991, Kupuri).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational-Hemivariational Inequalities with Applications, Second Edition represents the outcome of the cross-fertilization of nonlinear functional analysis and mathematical modelling, demonstrating its application to solid and contact mechanics. Based on authors’ original results, the book illustrates the use of various functional methods (including monotonicity, pseudomonotonicity, compactness, penalty and fixed-point methods) in the study of various nonlinear problems in analysis and mechanics. The classes of history-dependent operators and almost history-dependent operators are exposed in a large generality. A systematic and unified presentation contains a carefully selected collection of new results on variational-hemivariational inequalities with or without unilateral constraints. A wide spectrum of static, quasistatic, dynamic contact problems for elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic materials illustrates the applicability of these theoretical results. Written for mathematicians, applied mathematicians, engineers and scientists, this book is also a valuable tool for graduate students and researchers in nonlinear analysis, mathematical modelling, mechanics of solids, and contact mechanics. New to the second edition Convergence and well-posedness results for elliptic and history-dependent variational-hemivariational inequalities Existence results on various optimal control problems with applications in solid and contact mechanics Existence, uniqueness and stability results for evolutionary and differential variational-hemivariational inequalities with unilateral constraints Modelling and analysis of static and quasistatic contact problems for elastic and viscoelastic materials with looking effect Modelling and analysis of viscoelastic and viscoplastic dynamic contact problems with unilateral constraints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Separate and Joint Continuity presents and summarises the main ideas and theorems that have been developed on this topic, which lies at the interface between General Topology and Functional Analysis (and the geometry of Banach spaces in particular). The book offers detailed, self-contained proofs of many of the key results. Although the development of this area has now slowed to a point where an authoritative book can be written, many important and significant problems remain open, and it is hoped that this book may serve as a springboard for future and emerging researchers into this area. Furthermore, it is the strong belief of the authors that this area of research is ripe for exploitation. That is to say, it is their belief that many of the results contained in this monograph can, and should be, applied to other areas of mathematics. It is hoped that this monograph may provide an easily accessible entry point to the main results on separate and joint continuity for mathematicians who are not directly working in this field, but who may be able to exploit some of the deep results that have been developed over the past 125 years. Features Provides detailed, self-contained proofs of many of the key results in the area Suitable for researchers and postgraduates in topology and functional analysis Is the first book to offer a detailed and up-to-date summary of the main ideas and theorems on this topic

Book excerpt: The Radon transform is an important topic in integral geometry which deals with the problem of expressing a function on a manifold in terms of its integrals over certain submanifolds. Solutions to such problems have a wide range of applications, namely to partial differential equations, group representations, X-ray technology, nuclear magnetic resonance scanning, and tomography. This second edition, significantly expanded and updated, presents new material taking into account some of the progress made in the field since 1980. Aimed at beginning graduate students, this monograph will be useful in the classroom or as a resource for self-study. Readers will find here an accessible introduction to Radon transform theory, an elegant topic in integral geometry.
