Book excerpt: This book is a biography of the life of Italian painters Fra Bartolommeo and Andrea del Sarto as written by Leader Scott. Bartolommeo was an Italian Renaissance painter of religious subjects. He spent all his career in Florence until his mid-forties, when he traveled to work in various cities, as far south as Rome. He trained with Cosimo Rosselli and in the 1490s fell under the influence of Savonarola, which led him to become a Dominican friar in 1500, renouncing painting for several years. Typically his paintings are of static groups of figures in subjects such as the Virgin and Child with Saints. Del Sarto was an Italian painter from Florence, whose career flourished during the High Renaissance and early Mannerism. He was known as an outstanding fresco decorator, painter of altar-pieces, portraitist, draughtsman, and colorist.

By 1970, the number of scholarly books and articles exceeded 4,000, approximately a tenth in English. In the past 25 years, the literature has grown exponentially, with a notable increase in English-language publications. The five-volume series reproduces some 100 articles in English, selected from a broad range of books and journals. The collection is both accessible to the general reader and useful to the specialist, offering a representative sample of old and new commentary on the artist and his work. The career of a geniusArticles are arranged chronologically with separate volumes covering the artist's early life and works, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, commission associated with San Lorenzo, the tomb of Julius II and other Roman projects, and a final volume devoted to drawings, poetry, and miscellaneous studies. Spanning his entire 89-year life, the articles explore Michelangelo's prodigious creativity as an artist, thinker, and poet. The sheer quantity of what has been written on Michelangelo can be intimidating; most student have little sense of how to approach or effectively utilize the vast literature. By presenting a varied introduction to a great artist, this collection is a handy reference tool for a wide array of topics, problems, and literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fra Bartolommeo In the following lives of Fra Bartolommeo and Andrea del Sarto, I have endeavoured as much as possible to keep before me the object of the series, which is to bring the Great Masters in an appreciable form before the minds of those who are interested in art; and to give a human interest to the men whose works have become built in to the very walls of that great fabric, the Renaissance. Continental travel is, in these days, rendered so easy, that it is very desirable the study of art should no longer be an enigma; nor the walk through the galleries a weariness to the unlearned tourist. It helps us greatly, in comprehending a work, to have a clear idea of the kind of man who produced it; what were his characteristic and leading trains of thought, and, chiefly, what were the times in which he lived. M. Taine Lectures on Art, chap. i. p. 33), truly says: "Just as there is a physical temperature (zone) which by its variations determines the appearance of this or that species of plant, so is there a moral temperature, which by its variations determines the appearance of this or that species of art."
