Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you love and not like the same thing at the same time? This was the riddle that met Mississippi writer B. Brian Foster when he returned to his home state to learn about Black culture and found himself hearing about the blues. One moment, Black Mississippians would say they knew and appreciated the blues. The next, they would say they didn't like it. For five years, Foster listened and asked: "How?" "Why not?" "Will it ever change?" This is the story of the answers to his questions. In this illuminating work, Foster takes us where not many blues writers and scholars have gone: into the homes, memories, speculative visions, and lifeworlds of Black folks in contemporary Mississippi to hear what they have to say about the blues and all that has come about since their forebears first sang them. In so doing, Foster urges us to think differently about race, place, and community development and models a different way of hearing the sounds of Black life, a method that he calls listening for the backbeat.

Book excerpt: The Department of Health established the Information Centre in April 2005, in order to centralise the collection and dissemination of information across the NHS to support their health reform agenda. In February 2006, 'Dr Foster Intelligence' was launched, a joint venture between the Information Centre and Dr Foster Ltd (a private company already successful in health data dissemination) with the aim of developing information products and services which would encourage senior, strategic NHS staff to make effective use of information. The Committee sets out a number of recommendations, including: without a competitive tender, the joint venture seemed to offer an advantage to one company; also without competition, the Information Centre cannot demonstate that it paid the best price for its 50% share; the joint venture deal did not follow established good practice in public sector procurement; the cost of professional advice rose from an initial estimate of £248,000 to between £1.75 and £2.5 million; that the Department and the Information Centre could have made use of wider government experience on forming public private partnerships; it is unclear what benefits the Information Centre will receive from the joint venture; the first year saw a loss of £2.8 million.

Book excerpt: Legendary singer/songwriter Radney Foster found commercial success and critical acclaim due in large part to his literary approach to country music. Known for penning dozens of Top Forty, Top Twenty, Top Ten hits for both himself and Nashville's elite, he felt driven to tell stories longer than the three minutes allowed for radio. For You to See the Stars is a testament to his talent, showing the diversity of his voice, bringing lyrical prose to the page, and presenting Radney Foster to a whole new audience. The CD of the same title, includes the ten songs that inspired these stories.

Book excerpt: The title of these memoirs may suggest that I wrote them against my will. That would be only half right. A part of me wanted to write an account of my life, and another part of me opposed doing so. In the end I overcame my misgivings and went ahead. I realize that writing one’s memoirs may sound pretentious since it used to be that only important people such as former presidents and retired diplomats did so. This is no longer the case; there are now “kids” of twenty-five who are writing memoirs. There are several advantages in recording one’s memoirs instead of writing history. For one thing readers can always criticize the historian if they find errors of fact. The memoirist is, however, incorrigible (in the original, Latin sense of the word) since no one can say, “That’s not how you remember that event.” Another advantage is that it doesn’t require a lot of research. I have written fifteen-page “scholarly articles” that have sixty-five footnotes. I’ve sometimes read whole books just to support one sentence with one footnote. For a long time I’ve thought how much fun it would be to write something that wouldn’t require months of research, and it was fun. Anyone who relaxes, closes his eyes and travels back in time will be astounded to discover how much is stored deep down in the recesses of the mind. I made outlines and drafts full of abbreviations, and then I dictated to my computer using MacSpeech Dictate. It’s wonderful to speak and see the words appear on the screen. Of course, the first draft required extensive editing for many reasons, but I enjoyed that too. In a sense I only did what grandparents have done since tape recorders were invented, but now technology enables us to turn it into a book. The bare bones, non-scintillating style of what I have produced is partially due to the fact that it was dictated. I could have spent months or even years polishing what I have written, but as the poet Andrew Marvell put it, “At my back I always hear/Time’s winged chariot hurrying near...” I mainly have my grandchildren in mind as an audience, but it may be that other relatives and even some friends will find the end product diverting. I have no illusions about any widespread interest, and I certainly don’t expect to sell any copies or earn any royalties. If there is a pattern to my life, it is that Divine Providence repeatedly saved me from my own foolishness. Time and again I wanted something desperately and didn’t get it, only to find that God had something much better in store for me. There were many more “close calls” than I discuss herein --- many too frightening to contemplate or record. Looking at what I’ve accomplished in another way, a cynical friend once told me I haven’t done as well as my friends expected, but I’ve done better than my enemies hoped! There is much to be thankful for. My teacher, Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew, read a draft of the manuscript and made many valuable suggestions. It is a pleasure to thank her publicly for her assistance and inspiration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will I live with my parents again? Will I stay with my foster parents forever? For children in foster care, the answer to many questions is often "maybe." Maybe Days addresses the questions, feelings, and concerns these children most often face. Honest and reassuring, it also provides basic information that children want and need to know, including the roles of various people in the foster care system and whom to ask for help. An extensive afterword for adults caring for foster children describes the child's experience, underscores the importance of open communication, and outlines a variety of ways to help children adjust to the "maybe days"—and to thrive. From the Note to Foster Parents and Other Adults: The enormity of adjustment that children in foster care are asked to make is hard to over-state. Children in foster care may experience and express a range of feelings, many of which may emerge during the reading of this book. Multiple feelings may occur at the same time and may include: Relief and a sense of safety Happiness and a sense of enjoyment Sadness Anger Fear or worry Confusion Guilt Shame Loneliness Sense of loss Some children respond well to verbal discussion about their feelings....Keep in mind that asking questions and encouraging activities can be useful for some children, but it is not always necessary and is never a substitute for simply listening.

Book excerpt: Faith to Foster is a candid look into the life of ordinary foster parents TJ and Jenn Menn. It is a journey chronicling their decision making process, how the children arrived, the birth parents struggle to rehabilitate, help from friends and family, emotional goodbyes, and how faith in Jesus empowered them through it all. This is a story they wished they’d read before starting their foster parenting adventure. TJ and Jenn share their experiences and feelings in a way that encourages any reader to serve their neighbors, not just foster parents. Faith to Foster reminds Christians how God can use them to make a difference in their community.
