In this thesis, a design and FPGA implementation of a Viterbi decoder with a constraint length of 9 and code rate of 1/2 is presented. In this design, a novel systolic array architecture with time multiplexing, arithmetic pipelining and clock-to-data skews tolerance is developed. Further, by modifying this Viterbi algorithm, an adaptive Viterbi algorithm that is based on strongly-connected trellis decoding is proposed. Using the proposed adaptive algorithm, a design and FPGA implementation of a low-power adaptive Viterbi decoder with a constraint length of 9 and code rate of 1/2 is presented. The systolic array-based architecture used in this adaptive Viterbi decoder is a modified version of the architecture used for the non-adaptive Viterbi decoder in that the latter is modified to include the modules, which are needed for generating the survivor information and for eliminating the spurious toggles in the adaptive Viterbi decoding process.

Download or read book High-speed Viterbi Decoder Design and Implementation with FPGA. written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a design and implementation of a Viterbi decoder using FPGA technology. We use the sliding block filtering concept, the pipeline interleaving technique and the forward processing method to construct the design. We use VHDL to describe the design, Synopsys tools to synthesize it and Xilinx tools to target the design to an XVC300-8 device. Besides the above, the principle of the Viterbi Algorithm, two kinds of structures of the Viterbi decoder, VHDL coding style, a high level synthesis strategy and the methodologies of FPGA design are briefly discussed. We also present complete source code, scripts and reports for this design in appendixes.
Book Synopsis Specification And Verification Of Systolic Arrays by : Magdy A Bayoumi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circuits and architectures have become more complex in terms of structure, interconnection topology, and data flow. Design correctness has become increasingly significant, as errors in design may result in strenuous debugging, or even in the repetition of a costly manufacturing process. Although circuit simulation has been used traditionally and widely as the technique for checking hardware and architectural designs, it does not guarantee the conformity of designs to specifications. Formal methods therefore become vital in guaranteeing the correctness of designs and have thus received a significant amount of attention in the CAD industry today. This book presents a formal method for specifying and verifying the correctness of systolic array designs. Such architectures are commonly found in the form of accelerators for digital signal, image, and video processing. These arrays can be quite complicated in topology and data flow. In the book, a formalism called STA is defined for these kinds of dynamic environments, with a survey of related techniques. A framework for specification and verification is established. Formal verification techniques to check the correctness of the systolic networks with respect to the algorithmic level specifications are explained. The book also presents a Prolog-based formal design verifier (named VSTA), developed to automate the verification process, as using a general purpose theorem prover is usually extremely time-consuming. Several application examples are included in the book to illustrate how formal techniques and the verifier can be used to automate proofs.

Book Synopsis A Systolic Array Implementation of a Reed-Solomon Encoder and Decoder by : Stephen Scott McKenzie
Download or read book A Systolic Array Implementation of a Reed-Solomon Encoder and Decoder written by Stephen Scott McKenzie and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systolic array is a natural architecture for the implementation of a Reed-Solomon (RS) encoder and decoder. It possesses many of the properties desired for a special-purpose application: simple and regular design, concurrency, modular expansibility, fast response time, cost-effectiveness, and high reliability. As a result, it is very will suited for the simple and regular design essential for VLSI implementation. This thesis takes a modular approach to the design of a systolic array based RS encoder and decoder. Initially, the concept of systolic arrays is discussed followed by an introduction to finite field theory and Reed-Solomon error correction codes. Then it is shown how RS codes can be encoded and decoded with primitive shift registers and implemented using a systolic architecture. In this way, the reader can gain valuable insight and comprehension into how these entities are coalesced together to produced the overall implementation. Additional keywords: Systolic multipliers.
