This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 1990 Advanced Study Institute entitled "Fundamentals of Gas Phase Ion Chemistry" held at Mont Ste. Odile , Alsace, France, 25th June -6th July, 1990. The Institute brought together over 100 physicists, physical and organic chemists working on a wide variety of topics with gas-phase ion chemistry as the common theme. Many different viewpoints, making use of very different experimental and theoretical approaches, were brought to bear on the subject and provided a stimulating and up-to-date account of the subject. Although the Institute was built around the invited lectures, many specific points were addressed in workshops which consisted of informal discussion groups which were organised by participants during the Institute. This volume therefore contains not only chapters based on the lectures but summaries of many of the workshops which adds considerably to the diversity of information presented. This Advanced Study Institute was the fifth in a series of NATO-sponsored institutes devoted to various aspects of the physics and chemistry of gas phase ions. These meetings have been held every four years since the first, held in Biarritz in 1974, considered "Interactions between Ions and Molecules". The five volumes which comprise the proceedings of these meetings illustrate very clearly the many advances in theory and experiment which have taken place over the last 20 years.

Book Synopsis Mass Spectrometry of Natural Substances in Food by : Fred Mellon
Download or read book Mass Spectrometry of Natural Substances in Food written by Fred Mellon and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing the principles, practice and applications of mass spectrometric techniques in the study of natural substances in foods, this book conveys the depth and breadth of modern mass spectrometry in relation to food analysis. It covers traditional techniques such as electron and chemical ionisation and newer soft ionisation techniques such as matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation and electrospray. All of these techniques are especially relevant in food quality and safety studies and in biopolymer analysis. The ability to analyse biopolymers by mass spectrometry is having a major impact on the study of food structure components, food proteins, food pathogens and food components produced from genetically modified organisms. The principles and practice of mass spectrometry are covered in the early chapters and are followed by applications in flavour analysis and the determination of non-nutrient, biologically-active, natural substances in foods. The analysis and metabolic studies of amino acids, peptides, proteins, lipids, sugars, carbohydrates and vitamins is also discussed, with separate chapters on mineral and micronutrient metabolism and techniques of pyrolysis mass spectrometry. Mass Spectrometry of Natural Substances in Food will be a valuable resource for food scientists, food analysts and others working in food research, nutrition and safety.

Book Synopsis Organic Xenobiotics and Plants by : Peter Schröder
Download or read book Organic Xenobiotics and Plants written by Peter Schröder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and agro-ecosystems are frequently exposed to natural or synthetic substances, which, while they have no direct nutritional value or significance in metabolism, may negatively affect plant functioning. These, xenobiotics, may originate from both natural (fires, volcano eruptions, soil or rock erosion, biodegradation) and anthropogenic (air and soil pollution, herbicides) sources. And, while affected plants have only a limited number of possibilities for avoiding accumulation of these compounds, they do exhibit several enzymatic reactions for detoxification including oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis and conjugation reactions. In agro-ecosystems in particular these mechanisms have great significance in relation to herbicide detoxification and tolerance. In this volume an international group of experts present an overview of the nature and distribution of organic xenobiotics, including their uptake, effects on plant functioning and detoxification mechanisms. The particular significance of glutathione S-transferases in bio-indication and bio-monitoring, and in the detoxification of volatile organic air pollutants and herbicides is evaluated, and their potential significance in phytoremediation and bioaccumulation will be discussed. This volume will be of interest to a wide audience, from graduate students to senior researchers in a wide range of disciplines including plant ecology, plant biochemistry, agriculture and environmental management. It will also be of practical interest to environmentalists, policy makers and resource managers.

Book Synopsis Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II, Volume 7 by : D.F. Schriver
Download or read book Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II, Volume 7 written by D.F. Schriver and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-09-10 with total page 1071 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The section devoted to iron in this volume reflects the tremendous progress in the area. Specifically cluster chemistry, ligand transformations and detailed structural results are more prominent in COMC II. The organic chemistry of ruthenium and osmium is an area which has burgeoned during the period since the publication of COMC. This is especially true for the cluster chemistry of these elements, which have provided most of the advances in this important field. Consequently, this volume will include an update (1981-1993) of the chemistry of mono- and bi-nuclear complexes of ruthenium and osmium, with a rather more extensive treatment of tri- and tetra-nuclear complexes. This is because many of the early results in ruthenium and osmium cluster chemistry described in COMC are now much better understood and can thus be placed in a more general context. In the case of complexes containing clusters with five or more metal atoms, the coverage is essentially complete, again because this chemistry has developed during the 1980s.
