Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years' Campaign in India I have not written a history of India, nor of its great Christian Missions, but simply a narrative of what I have felt and seen and done in the East, covering a period of four years and seven months. As far as possible, I have avoided foreign words; but to assist the English reader in pronouncing Hindustani names, I will here explain that "a" has the sound of short u, as in cut: "a" the broad sound of ah: "i" the sound of ee: and "u" of oo. This short, easy lesson, with its three accented letters illustrated in the word Hindustani, had better be learned at first sight, and then the reader can proceed with a correct pronunciation. A "rupee" is equivalent to two shillings, or forty-eight cents; an "anna" is the sixteenth of a rupee; a "pice" is the fourth, and a "pie" the twelfth, of an anna. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oriental Campaigns and European Furloughs: The Autobiography of a Veteran of Indian Mutiny IN submitting these Memoirs of the Life Of an Indian officer, from Cadet to Colonel, to an indulgent public, I have endeavoured to depict my experiences in an unpretentious and accurate manner, avoiding the high colouring which sometimes accompanies works on The Gorgeous East. I trust the work may prove useful and instructive to the many young officers and others whose careers lie in India, as well as of interest to the many who have relatives and friends in that country. I hope also it may induce the general public at home to take a more practical interest in that wonderful country with its teeming millions, and when possible to visit it, now that railway facilities make it easy and comfortable to do so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Campaigns on the North-West Frontier The history of the north-west Frontier of India is one long record of strife with the Wild and war-like tribes that inhabit the difficult mountainous region which is the Borderland between British India and Afghanistan. From pre-mutiny days down to the present time the trouble has been there, though there have been intervals of rest more or less frequent; and all the factors which contribute to a fiery and fanatical outbreak are still present, and may at any moment compel a fresh expedi tion to punish an outrage, to enforce restitution, and to restore order. Distance has prevented her obtain ing their permission, and she was unwilling to appropri ate the credit of these narratives to herself, by using the facts and altering the language but she has endeavoured, as far as possible, to avoid publishing anything which the writer might object to seeing in print. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-One Years in India, Vol. 2 of 2: From Subaltern to Commander-in-Chief The news which greeted us on our arrival was indeed disturbing. Lord Elgin was at Dharmsala in a dying condition, and the Chief had been obliged to leave him and push on to Lahore, in consequence of unsatisfactory reports from brigadier-general Chamberlain, who was just then commanding an expedition which had been sent into the mountains near Peshawar, and had met with unexpected opposition. The civil authorities on the spot reported that there existed a great deal of excitement all along the border, that the tribes were collecting in large numbers, that emissaries from Kabul had appeared amongst them, and that, unless reinforcements could be sent up at once, the Government would be involved in a war which must inevitably lead to the most serious com plications, not only on the frontier, but with Afghanistan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of the Late Victorious Campaigns in Affghanistan, Under General Pollock: With Recollections of Seven Years Service in India It may be necessary for the Author to state that the present volume was commenced from a simple desire of laying before his countrymen such details relative to the late victorious Campaign in Affghanistan, as occurred under his own immediate observation and experience. He ventures to hope that the plain unvarnished narrative of the strange circumstances, and of the hardships and dangers encountered and surmounted by our gallant soldiers in the far East, will not prove unacceptable to the numerous readers who must feel interested in their perilous adventures and exploits, which so materially conduced to determine the extent of the British rule in India at the present moment.
