With equal propriety, and perhaps with greater justice, she might be called the cleanest city in the world because of the number Of her fountains. Pagan emperors and Christian popes alike have found both profit and pleasure in adding another fountain or in making or repairing one more aqueduct to give a still greater supply of water to the Roman populace. NO other people, with the possible exception Of the Spanish Moors, have so appreciated the value and the beauty Of abundant water. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book excerpt: There is not a single great piazza in Rome unadorned by a magnificent fountain. In this lavish, all-color book, the fountains are described one by one, starting with their commission and creation, and continuing with stylistic and scientific analysis. Maps and period documents complete a remarkable and historical survey, giving us an enthralling glimpse of the story behind these masterpieces. The Fountains of Rome does not attempt to cover all the water monuments of Rome; instead, it is the personal choice of one of the most sensitive and creative photographers of our time, who spent several years on this wonderful project, a work to thrill historians, architects, designers, artists, and all devoted travelers to one of the world's most beautiful - and visited - cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 5000 fountains of Rome, scattered in the streets, squares, parks, courtyards, are the soul of this project. Whoever comes to Rome thinks of the Colosseum, a light westerly breeze blowing through the cafes on Via Veneto, the Dolce Vita of the great Fellini, and the embrace of the Pope in St. Peter’s Square. Rome is also about water with its 5000 fountains. Flowing transparency which enchants out gaze and carries it far away, the sparkling of a thousand silver squirts, the glittering drops that become pearls flying free in the city. Fountains play a music that is song and prayer, harp and violin. They are the notes of a melody born of eternity, chords that walk together with the mystery of man. If you are in Rome, check the ebook “The 5000 fountains of ROME” to see if you are close to a fountain! THE 5000 FOUNTAINS OF ROME As you've ever seen… This is a visual work, cultural value of the suggestive power of these elements of urban, rich in beauty, and often in history, not infrequently true works of art, always sources of artistic inspiration. Edoardo Vianello, singer and songwriter of popular music, lover of his city and his art, he is passionate about looking for all these fountains, some of which are hidden and almost unattainable for them personal, shoot and create a unique collection that no other can claim. In this series Vianello provides its photographic heritage and research with the publication of a series of digital volumes, pooling fountains districts and neighborhoods and creating itineraries that allow those who share this same passion to go see them in person. Now, available on Books Store, there are: I-Monti, II-Trevi, III-Colonna, IV-Campomarzio, V-Ponte, VI-Parione, VII-Regola, VIII-San’Eustachio, IX-Pigna, X-Campitelli, XI-Sant’Angelo, XII-Ripa, XIII-Trastevere and XIV-Borgo, XV-Esquilino, XVI-Ludovisi, XVII-Sallustiano and XVIII-Castro Pretorio. Book excerpt: This book invites readers to join Joe Gartman, culture columnist for Italia! Magazine, on a journey to 80 of Rome's celebrated fountains, to find a more intimate way of experiencing the Eternal City. On foot with book in hand, or simply in imagination, each chapter takes readers on a vivid walk, enhanced with colorful, revealing photographs of Roman life. Every fountain in Rome tells a story; every story is about Rome: her history, her legends, and her extraordinary people, from poets to popes, artists to models, architects to emperors. Every street, piazza, wall and garden that contains a fountain has a past worth knowing. The reader is invited to follow the paths in this book, with 15 different turn-by-turn walking tours, 17 maps, and 181 photos. There are plenty of things to see along the way, especially the artistic treasures that await behind unexpected doors. In your armchair or on your feet, journey from Trevi's torrents to the Naiad's naughty nymphs; from the quiet basins in Piazza San Simeone to Bernini's mighty Four Rivers in Piazza Navona; from the Dark Fountains in Villa Borghese to the charming lionesses in Piazza del Popolo; and listen to the voices of the water.
