Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation English the Expression of Ideas Two demands, seemingly conflicting, have made a new first-year book in English for high schools a necessity, the first being the demand of the college for better written English on the part of the entering students; the second being the demand of the public for a more democratic distribution of courses than a college preparatory school offers. An examination of the two demands will show, however, that they are after all not diametrically opposed. Right thinking, clear and adequate expression, efficiency, are the reasonable and just demands both of the public and of the college. Neither is concerned with the method of doing the work, so long as desired results are obtained. The demand of the college for efficiency of expression has led to compulsory courses in English in our high schools, with a corresponding increase in the number of hours required for the study. No longer is it felt that only the gifted few can write; it is demanded that all shall write. The demand of the public, on the other hand, has led to the reduction of the elementary courses from nine years to eight, and the introduction into the high schools of the so-called vocational courses. The result has been to increase enormously the size of our first-year classes. These people also must be taught to write. From the universities came men with the background of humanistic studies, endowed with wit and with poetic talents instinct with the beau tiful or the sublime. With the advent of these and of Shakespeare, the London stage won to its new standard all necessary to make it complete but the constructive critic. Such a man was not only required to supplement the artistic completeness Of Elizabethan drama, but to serve lesser writers with education in fundamental form. So, unmis takably the man for his time was Ben Jonson, in no respect more rare than in his erudition. His intellectual grasp is known to have compre hended even the subtlest knowledge of his times and much mediaeval lore, but it is impressive to con sider only his classic learning. The first of English poets, with the wealth of Greece as well as Rome at his command, he has not, in periods especially animated by the Greek spirit, been surpassed for the profoundness of his literary acquaintance. Others have exhibited more intimate knowledge and de light; but Jonson in his day stood alone in his championship and first in his conscious theory of art based upon scholarship. While a catalogue of Jonson's Greek and Latin reading would fill line after line, the story of his educational advantages can be briefly told. All quality and inspiration in his early training may safely be attributed by Jonson's own grateful acknowledgment to the famous second master of Westminster School, the most learned, and my honored friend, Master Camden,1 to whom Every M an in his Humor was dedicated. Under his instruction was laid the foundation of vast and exact translation. The jottings of idle moments, contained in the Discoveries, are a revelation Of the range at Jonson's command. Incidental anecdote or authority quoted in this memorandum laid under contribution not only the masterpieces of poetry, philosophy, and oratory, but more obscure gram marians, sophists, and historians.2 With his vigor ous scholarship and naturally retentive memory, Jonson could scarcely be surpassed for the richness of his quotation and allusion. An acquaintance with the life and works of even one good painter is sufficient to open the eyes to a world of beautiful thoughts, beautifully expressed. The pictures in this book may be used profitably in any grade in school. The Foundation Readers are excellent guides for a course of study of good authors and good artists. The complete works of the authors should be in the school-room where the children may see them and consult their pages. The young should commit to memory many of the selections in this Book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Study of Literature: An Introduction to Literary Theory and Interpretation I have gone into these details in order to make clear the design and use of the book which follows. An eminent teacher of literature was accustomed to impress upon his students that a general principle is as gas in the mouth of him that knows not the particulars. This touches what is the perpetual problem for the art of exposition - the question exactly how far to go in discussion of individual literary works, which have an interest of their own, in offering these as elucidation of literary theory. It would be possible to write a work which would be wholly theoretic; but this would not only make a dull book, it would further be a sin against the foundation principle that our first duty to literature is to love it. On the other hand, if in so large a field one surrenders freely to disquisition on literary master pieces, the connected thread oi philosophical theory is lost in the particulars. For philosophy is only a fine word for seeing things in their true perspective. The natural solution seems to be the plan here adopted: a single work devoted to literary theory, discussion of particular works being reduced to what is essential, supplemented by other works in which special portions of literature are followed out in detail. In the foot notes to this book I make references to other works of mine by which study of particular points can be carried farther. Very occasionally I have incorporated in this work tabular or other matter from my other books; for, while it may seem question able taste for an author to quote from himself, yet it seems a pity to seek out a second best illustration when a better is available.
