Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An album-by-album celebration of the life and music of Mac Miller through oral histories, intimate reflections, and critical examinations of his enduring work. “One of my most vivid memories of him is the way he would look at you while he was playing you a song. He tried to look you right in the eyes to see how you were feeling about it.” —Will Kalson, friend and first manager Following Mac Miller’s tragic passing in 2018, Donna-Claire Chesman dedicated a year to chronicling his work through the unique lens of her relationship to the music and Mac’s singular relationship to his fans. Like many who’d been following him since he’d started releasing mixtapes at eighteen years old, she felt as if she’d come of age alongside the rapidly evolving artist, with his music being crucial to her personal development. “I want people to remember his humanity as they’re listening to the music, to realize how much bravery and courage it takes to be that honest, be that self-aware, and be that real about things going on internally. He let us witness that entire journey. He never hid that.” —Kehlani, friend and musician. The project evolved to include intimate interviews with many of Mac’s closest friends and collaborators, from his Most Dope Family in Pittsburgh to the producers and musicians who assisted him in making his everlasting music, including Big Jerm, Rex Arrow, Wiz Khalifa, Benjy Grinberg, Just Blaze, Josh Berg, Syd, Thundercat, and more. These voices, along with the author’s commentary, provide a vivid and poignant portrait of this astonishing artist—one who had just released a series of increasingly complex albums, demonstrating what a musical force he was and how heartbreaking it was to lose him. “As I’m reading the lyrics, it’s crazy. It’s him telling us that he hopes we can always respect him. I feel like this is a message from him, spiritually. A lot of the time, his music was like little letters and messages to his friends, family, and people he loved, to remind them of who he really was.” —Quentin Cuff, best friend and tour manager

"Weatherford never talks down to her audience...using figurative language and rich vocabulary to tell her story...Green's debut as a picture-book illustrator is brilliant...A fine introduction to an important American artist."—Kirkus Reviews starred review Dorothea Lange saw what others missed. Before she raised her lens to take her most iconic photo, Dorothea Lange took photos of the downtrodden, from bankers in once-fine suits waiting in breadlines, to former slaves, to the homeless sleeping on sidewalks. A case of polio had left her with a limp and sympathetic to those less fortunate. Traveling across the United States, documenting with her camera and her fieldbook those most affected by the stock market crash, she found the face of the Great Depression. In this picture book biography, Carole Boston Weatherford's lyrical prose captures the spirit of the influential photographer.

Book excerpt: Each of us is able to recognise the faces of many hundreds if not thousands of people known to us. We recognise faces despite seeing them in different views and with changing expressions. From these varying patterns we somehow extract the invariant characteristics of an individual’s face, and usually remember why a face seems familiar, recalling where we know the person from and what they are called. In this book, originally published in 1988, the author describes the progress which has been made by psychologists towards understanding these perceptual and cognitive processes, and points to theoretical directions which may prove important in the future. Though emphasising theory, the book also addresses practical problems of eyewitness testimony, and discusses the relationship between recognising faces, and other aspects of face processing such as perceiving expressions and lipreading. The book was aimed primarily at a research audience, but would also interest advanced undergraduate students in vision and cognition.

Richard Morgan has grasped two essential realities: that people live as well as die in nursing homes and that God meets people here with unyielding love."" --Henry C. Simmons, former Director of Center on Aging, Union Presbyterian Seminary ""Dick Morgan has creatively and insightfully reflected the struggles of aging as lived in the never failing presence of God. The reader is provided an image of the human spirit strengthened by God to give life perspective and purpose, even when the body becomes more frail. The Scripture readings, devotions, and prayers will resonate with each caregiver, care receiver, and family member as they face together the adventures and challenges of a rich new phase of life."" --W. Ray Inscoe, Director of Pastoral Care, Westminster Canterbury, Richmond, VA ""As a chaplain in a long care facility, I often discover that residents are without devotional reading to nourish their faith. This work will be a source of inspiration and comfort to older people who are struggling with what meaning their life has in a nursing home, when 'someone else takes [them] where they do not want to go.' It makes them aware that God still has a plan for their lives."" --Philip Jamison, Chaplain, Redstone Highlands, North Huntingdon, PA

Zebrowitz unmasks the face and provides the first systematic, scientific account of our tendency to judge people by their appearance. Book excerpt: Scientists have emphasized the innate, genetically based nature of our fascination with the human face and its almost limitless expressive capacity, all of which is represented in the art of the last six centuries. But little attention has been paid to the anomoly of the vacuous expressions of earlier facial representations. Brener attributes this change to a change in the functioning of the human brain, as well as the role of cultural factors. It is the evolution of both genes and culture that has resulted in a marked increase in the human ability to create and interpret facial expressions. The result of this has impacted human behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Novel deals with a common prose familiar nowadays. The expressions are normal, sometimes poetic and have considerable banalities. In translation I have tried to neutralise all this which should help an English reader. I have retained culture oriented expressions in the same form as it is important for a Dravidian text. The moods and feelings of the characters are satisfactorily depicted yet he has used dramatic techniques like the body language. The speech these characters make has enough humour and local flavour . Ponnappan's character is sadly humorous. The fiction in a whole has been made out of four or five small narratives and all have been united. This is a kind of Steinbeckian technique that depicts a landscape its people and their way of living. Though sociological in portrayal the work leaves no clue for any ideology in the end. The title I have given to this work is ‘Faces of Corpses’. But it is somebody's wish to have it as ‘Faces of the Dead’ as it is official. Both mention a common fact that some faces are liveless, horror ridden and blank.
