Book excerpt: "Theatres of the Real presents work by eight photographers Sarah Dobai, Annabel Elgar, Tom Hunter, Sarah Pickering, Nigel Shafran, Clare Strand, Mitra Tabrizian and Danny Treacy, who can be seen as extending and redefining a tradition of British documentary photography by engaging with a range of social issues or by simply recording aspects of our contemporary world. However, the work that they make does not conform to the conventional methods and style of documentary photography." "Many of these artists' works involve situations that have been staged for the camera: sets have been constructed, actors have been dressed in costumes, and narrative scenarios invented. Other works, however, conform to the conventions of 'straight' photography: they record pre-existing scenes without any kind of direct intervention by the photographer. However, what unites all of these photographs is a sense of theatricality. Ranging from melodramatic reconstructions to the small tales of everyday --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the survey of photographed sexuality and lust in Darkside I, the other end of the physical spectrum is illuminated: the intimate affinity between death and photography impairment, disease, degeneration, violence and death, pain, grief and loss. Recording death is, along with war reporting, one of photographys original tasks. Pictures of horror are often shocking and yet bestselling. They provoke questions about exploitation, complicity and power relationships in front of and behind the camera and in the photograph itself. Photography often provokes accusations that it aestheticizes misery, creating a

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Revolution: The Basics is an accessible and concise introduction to the history of the revolution in France. Combining a traditional narrative with documents of the era and references to contemporary imagery of the revolution, the book traces the long-and short-term causes of the French Revolution as well as its consequences up to the dissolution of the Convention and the ascendancy of Napoleon. The book is written with an explicit aim for its reader to acquire understanding of the past whilst imparting knowledge using underlying historical concepts such as evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, significance, empathy, perspectives, and contestability. Key topics discussed within the book include: The structure of French society before 1789. The long- and short-term factors that contributed to the French Revolution. How ordinary French people, including women and slaves, participated in the revolution. What brought about the end of the ancien régime. The major reforms of the National Assembly, 1789–1791, and how they lead to the division and radicalisation of the revolution. How the alternative visions of the new society divided the revolution and what were the internal and external pressures on the revolution that contributed to its radicalisation. The forms of terror which enabled reality to triumph over the idealism. The rise of Napoleon Bonaparte as military leader and Emperor. This book is an ideal introduction for anyone wishing to learn more about this influential revolution in the shaping of modern Europe and the world.

Book excerpt: — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — off legitimate research interests against artists’ justi?ed claims for economic grati?cation? And how could new methods of documentation and dissemination, for example on the Internet, contribute to a more liberal access to the (so-far) closed-circuit system of established formulas for the mediation of multi-media artworks, in order to create a wider frame of reference via new visualization techniques? These questions were debated among other issues at an international symposium, held in the spring of 2004 at the University of Art in Bremen. As intentionally re?ected in the adapted title from Dan Graham’s seminal video-feedback installation »Present Continuous Past(s)«, the conference discussions crystallized around three main aspects, namely the relation of the artists’ intention to the faithful presentation and preservation of multi-media artworks for possible future re-presentations, the speci?c reception conditions that these works require as much in their gallery displays as under the conditions of post-exhibition documentation (particularly in anticipation of future presentations), and ?nally – as implicitly re?ected in all of these aspects – the philosophical dimensions of media art’s historicity. Media art’s ›becoming-of-age‹ has generally caused more concern and has led to more useful strategic initiatives within the museum context than in the academic ?eld of art history.
