Book excerpt: Over the last decade QCD has produced a quantitative description of many high energy processes. However the successes are mostly restricted to the description of inclusive hard processes. We are still lacking an understanding of soft strong interactions, including the origin of the total cross sections and diffraction as well as hard physics at small-x. Moreover the soft and small-x dynamics and hard dynamics intertwine delicately at the Tevatron energies and beyond, both in new particle production and in hard exclusive or semi-exclusive processes. Future experiments can dramatically contribute to the understanding of this physics if they extend the acceptance to the forward direction. The topics to be discussed include a 3-dimensional picture of a fast nucleon at different virtualities, challenges and paradoxes of small-x physics and ways to address them in inclusive and diffractive forward hard phenomena, and the presence of correlations in the transverse distribution of partons in the nucleon as revealed by the CDF photon + three jet production study.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on an unresolved problem in particle and nuclear physics: the relation between two important non-perturbative phenomena in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) – quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. The author develops a new analysis method in the lattice QCD, and derives a number of analytical formulae to express the order parameters for quark confinement, such as the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, and the Wilson loop in terms of the Dirac eigenmodes closely related to chiral symmetry breaking. Based on the analytical formulae, the author analytically as well as numerically shows that at finite temperatures there is no direct one-to-one correspondence between them. The thesis describes this extraordinary achievement using the first-principle analysis, and proposes a possible new phase in which quarks are confined and chiral symmetry is restored.
