Book excerpt: Nowadays 3D Geoinformation is needed for many planning and analysis tasks. For example, 3D city and infrastructure models are paving the way for complex environmental and noise analyzes. 3D geological sub-surface models are needed for reservoir exploration in the oil-, gas-, and geothermal industry. Thus 3D Geoinformation brings together researchers and practitioners from different fields such as the geo-sciences, civil engineering, 3D city modeling, 3D geological and geophysical modeling, and, last but not least, computer science. The diverse challenges of 3D Geoinformation Science concern new approaches and the development of standards for above- and under-ground 3D modeling, efficient 3D data management, visualization and analysis. Finally, the integration of different 3D approaches and data models is seen as one of the most important challenges to be solved.

Book excerpt: The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) and the Bavarian Competence Network for Technical and Scienti?c High Performance Computing (KONWIHR) publish in the present book results of numerical simulations facilitated by the High P- formance Computer System in Bavaria (HLRB II) within the last two years. The papers were presented at the Fourth Joint HLRB and KONWIHR Review and - sult Workshop in Garching on 8th and 9th December 2009, and were selected from all progress reports of projects that use the HLRB II. Similar to the workshop two years ago, the majority of the contributed papers belong to the area of computational ?uid dynamics (CFD), condensed matter physics, astrophysics, chemistry, computer sciences and high-energy physics. We note a considerable increase of the user c- munity in some areas: Compared to 2007, the number of papers increased from 6 to 12 in condensed matter physics and from 2 to 5 in high-energy physics. Bio s- ences contributed only one paper in 2007, but four papers in 2009. This indicates that the area of application of supercomputers is continuously growing and entering new ?elds of research. The year 2007 saw two major events of particular importance for the LRZ. First, after a substantial upgrade with dual-core processors the SGI Altix 4700 superc- puter reached a peak performance of more than 62 Tera?op/s. And second, the n- pro?t organization Gauss Centre for Supercomputing e. V. (GCS) was founded on April 13th.

Based on the most recent standards from ASHRAE, this Sixth Edition provides complete and up-to-date coverage of all aspects of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. You’ll find the latest load calculation procedures, indoor air quality procedures, and issues related to ozone depletion. Throughout the text, numerous worked examples clearly show you how to apply the concepts in realistic scenarios. In addition, several computer programs (several new to this edition) help you understand key concepts and allow you to simulate various scenarios, such as psychometrics and air quality, load calculations, piping system design, duct system design, and cooling coil simulation. Additionally, the load calculation program has been revised and updated. These computer programs are available at the book’s website: www.wiley.com/college/mcquiston Key Features of the Sixth Edition Additional new worked examples in the text and on the accompanying software. Chapters 6-9 have been extensively revised for clarity and ease of use. Chapter 8, The Cooling Load, now includes two approaches: the heat balance method, as recommended by ASHRAE, and the simpler RTS method. Both approaches include computer applications to aid in calculations. Provides complete, authoritative treatment of all aspects of HVAC, based on current ASHRAE standards. Numerous worked examples and homework problems provide realistic scenarios to apply concepts.

Book excerpt: Design encompasses some of the highest cognitive abilities of human beings, including creativity, synthesis and problem solving. A substantial and varied range of research methods has been developed and adopted for the analysis of design activity, but until now it has been difficult to compare the work of different researchers using different methods. This book contains the results of an international workshop held in Delft, The Netherlands, which focused on one particular research method, that of protocol analysis. Researchers from seventeen different leading centres around the world were invited to analyse the same video recordings of designers working on an engineering product design. The 20 chapters in this book are the records of that workshop, providing rich insights into the design process and an overview of accumulated knowledge on design from these researchers. There is also a discussion of the properties and limitations of protocol analysis as a research technique for analysing design activity. The book is a substantial contribution to developing understanding of the nature of design activity, and is of value to researchers, teachers and practitioners of design.

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades the increasingly collaborative work developed among architects, urban planners, artists and media designers has developed a particular landscape of projects that engage information technology as a catalytic tool for expanding, augmenting or altering the public and social interactions in the urban space. Through the projects and prototypes presented, the book aims to dissect the modes in which spatial practitioners operate in the digital city and how information technology and media are tools for place making. Interacting, Integrating, Expanding, Networking and Hacking are the five categories that explore modes of operating in the digital city. The line of inquiry set up through the research framework of the book begins from the reading of the contemporary urban conditions as the shared, the common, the smart, and the networker.

Book excerpt: The concept of relational space in urbanism'understanding the space of the city as produced by society'is connected with an understanding of architecture unfolding in situations. Urban space is induced by architecture, space is produced while experiencing architecture within a situation. There is a dialectical interplay between architectonic material (intra-architectonic reality) and usage and action (urban reality). Thus, an architectonic situation can be interpreted as performative in the sense of performativity as it has emerged in the discourse over the last decade. The everyday urban life of the city, with all its potential and conflicts, is taken into consideration. Analyzing the urban is not enough. This discourse is about Urban Design. Is architectural design one part, and the actualization of architecture in a performative incident another? Does Urban Design need different practices?
