Book excerpt: Set in the 17th century during the heyday of privateering and the decline of buccaneering, Fortune's Whelp is a brash, swords-out sea-going adventure. Scotsman Edward MacNaughton, a former privateer captain, twice accused and acquitted of piracy and currently seeking a commission, is ensnared in the intrigue associated with the attempt to assassinate King William III in 1696. Who plots to kill the king, who will rise in rebellion--and which of three women in his life, the dangerous smuggler, the wealthy widow with a dark past, or the former lover seeking independence--might kill to further political ends? Variously wooing and defying Fortune, Captain MacNaughton approaches life in the same way he wields a sword or commands a fighting ship: with the heart of a lion and the craft of a fox.

Book excerpt: Victoria Malvey, the exquisitely talented author of "A Merry Chase, Temptress, Enchanted, " and "Portrait of Dreams, " takes her readers once again to Victorian England, where a defiant lord and a daring lady struggle to forge a new destiny...together. Lady Alyssa Porter refuses to leave the future to chance. Determined to provide for her younger sister after the death of their parents, she conceives a most ingenious -- if somewhat shocking -- plan. Soon the exotic beauty is masquerading as Zora, gypsy fortune-teller extraordinaire. Before long, using intuition, wit, and a flair for high drama, she is the latest darling of the town, invited to the finest of homes and introduced to the most interesting of men. Intrigued by tales of the mysterious gypsy, Mr. Ian Fortune is amused by her audacity as she spins beguiling tales for enthralled lords and ladies. Certain that Zora is neither gypsy nor seer, he is nonetheless enchanted by her bold ruse, though he wonders if others will take the deception so lightly. Drawn to her vibrant beauty, he vows to win her confidence and learn her secrets. For even the most fiercely independent female sometimes yields to the pleasures of a man's protection. And though this lady may not hold the future in her hands, she does hold the key to his heart.

Book Synopsis Ships, Money and Politics by : Kenneth R. Andrews
Download or read book Ships, Money and Politics written by Kenneth R. Andrews and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1991-04-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In neglecting maritime and naval matters, students of the reign of Charles I have missed or misunderstood important elements in the sickness of the early Stuart polity. The crisis of the monarchy at that time was bound up with the failure of the nation's sea forces in the wars of the 1620s and with Charles's efforts to reform and strengthen the navy by means of ship money. The studies of the shipping industry, shipowning, mutiny and one particular seaman's experience in the transatlantic servant's trade explore the economic and social aspects of seafaring, especially the relations between owners, masters, and men at a time of rapid growth and change in the merchant marine. But the relations between the merchant marine and the Royal Navy were so close that the two should be studied together. The essays on Sir Kenelm Digby's privateering venture in the Mediterranean, on ship money (the longest and most central), on the expedition against the Salle rovers, and on the Parliamentary Navy demonstrate in different ways how naval policy, naval finance, and naval enterprise were linked with the problems and the interests of the private sector, which actually took over the Navy in 1642, with not altogether savory results. This novel juxtaposition of topics will, it is hoped, stimulate new thinking about Caroline society and politics.--Book jacket.
