D-Day is about to begin. The Normandy landings are brought alive in this electrifying graphic novel that tells the story of that Longest Day through the eyes of the men who were there. Book excerpt: Christopher Duffy's brilliant history of fortifications and siegecraft is the best general work available on the subject. It covers the classic age of military engineering, which was heralded by the work of Vauban, chief engineer to the French King Louis XIV. There was astonishingly little change in the way fortresses were perceived and used for the next 200 years, until the advent of rifled artillery brought dramatic new ideas into play. Duffy examines the purpose of fortresses across Europe, and the debates of the time concerning their offensive and defensive uses. He analyses the strategic and structural considerations that dictated their locations, and describes how they were planned, designed and built, and by whom. He then explains how a siege progressed from start to finish: plans and preparations; the investment of the fortress; the ways in which a fortress could be reduced short of a formal siege; and the siege itself at every stage, from the choice of the frontal attack to the storm of the breaches and capitulation. The differences in siting, design and techniques of attack and defense for coastal fortifications are also covered. Using excerpts from the accounts of people who took part in actual sieges or were themselves besieged, Duffy brings out the human side of siege warfare as well as its purely technical aspects. In order to give the overall picture he traces four great sieges in their entirety: Namur in 1692 and again in 1695, with Vauban and his Dutch counterpart Coehoorn pitting their wits against one another; the French attack on Antwerp in 1832, which showed how little siegecraft had changed since Namur; and the Anglo-Dutch naval bombardment of Algiers in 1816. Duffy's clear perspective, and his skillful handling of details, make Fire and Stone and enthralling book to read as well as an invaluable source of information.

Book excerpt: Trinity Lutheran Church was burned to the ground by one of the most prolific arsonists in the history of the United States. When Paul Keller was finally apprehended and imprisoned, one of his first visitors was Rick Rouse, pastor of the church he burned. Pastor Rouse said that he was compelled by Christ to visit Paul and offer him his personal forgiveness. That simple and profound act began a process of healing and transformation that included the entire congregation, the victims of arson, and his family. Through sharing his story Ñ and highlighting other stories of forgiveness Ñ Pastor Rouse outlines the path toward reconciliation that many have experienced when relying upon God's gift of forgiveness.

But Tan soon learns that there are things worse than a death sentence. Terrifying creatures from dark and dangerous Incendin, a place long locked away by shaper magic, have returned—and they've destroyed everything Tan has ever loved. Now Tan must help the king's servant find an ancient artifact, the only thing that can stop the Incendin evil. And to do so, he must gain the trust of Amia, a beautiful wanderer who has lost just as much as Tan. Book excerpt: In the early morning of 10 May 1940, the sky literally fell on the heads of the defenders of Fort Eben-Emael, considered to be Belgium's most powerful fortress. This huge structure, with its powerful artillery and infantry weapons, was the key to the Meuse and Albert Canal defences. In the darkness of the pre-dawn, German DFS 230 gliders drifted silently over the southern Netherlands, landing one by one on top of Eben-Emael. Within minutes German Special Forces troops destroyed most of the fort’s weapons and observation capabilities. The following day, the garrison surrendered, and the door to Belgium and France was open. But, as Clayton Donnell relates in this perceptive and meticulously researched study, Eben-Emael was only one of the nineteen forts of the fortified positions of Liège and Namur attacked in May 1940. Three new and sixteen refurbished forts held out for several days, and fought to the death. The story he tells contradicts the common assumption that these static defences were rolled over or bypassed –powerless to resist the overwhelming force of the German combat engineer’s assaults, Stuka bombs and heavy artillery shells. In vivid detail he demonstrates that their importance in the 1940 campaign has been seriously under reported, and he gives clarity to some of the legends that have grown up around the capture of Eben-Emael itself.

Along with his three teen friends, Scott, Chad and Crash, he returned to the land of his birth to battle the evil that threatened not only his world but also the surface world where he had been raised. Pursued by a Gorgon and her legion of cats, they quickly learned that the Inner World was a land of myth filled with strange creatures and dangerous beasts such as the boys had never imagined. Once again he must call upon his three friends who, along with the wolf boy, Criton, risk their lives attempting to bring peace to a world in turmoil. T.J. learned that his mother was still alive and he set out to rescue her from the brutish Mordraves. He also discovered that Scott is his half-brother and the bond between the two boys becomes stronger than ever before. Now, in Fortress of the Fire Child, T.J. and his friends face further danger in the form of Aquatis, a ruthless shape shifter who once battled the Fire Child's father and who now seeks revenge against the son. Intrigue continues as Mathias, the T.J.'s arch enemy, reappears and attempts to regain the throne of Stonemass, the chief city of the Inner World. Further danger ensues as an army of mercenaries march forward to attack the Fortress, home of the Fire Child, and T.J. begins to doubt his own power pitted against such formidable odds.

It started long ago, as a war between the shadowy Immortals that persists today, as the wizard Mauryl's Shaping confronts the Shadows summoned from Chaos. Tristen is that Shaping. Both more and less than human, he successfully fought sorcery's evil tides, a victory that brought his friend Cefwyn both a kingdom and true love. But the Lines that hold the world in place are shifting again. A ruthless enemy is preparing for battle. Once again, Tristen will take up the sword inscribed with "Truth" and "Illusion" on its blade. But he faces more than war and a pretender to Cefwyn's throne. The Shadows he sees are straight from Ruin -- a flow of darkness covering the world like ink... Fortress of Dragons completes the high-fantasy epic begun in Fortress in the Eye of Time and continued in Fortress of Eagles and Fortress of Owls --a powerful tale set in a world of magic, violence, wonder and awe -- a world as vividly real as our own.
